The Light Brigade
The Light Brigade | Kameron Hurley
From the Hugo Awardwinning author of The Stars Are Legion comes a brand-new science fiction thriller about a futuristic war during which soldiers are broken down into light in order to get them to the front lines on Mars. They said the war would turn us into light. I wanted to be counted among the heroes who gave us this better world. The Light Brigade: its what soldiers fighting the war against Mars call the ones who come backdifferent. Grunts in the corporate corps get busted down into light to travel to and from interplanetary battlefronts. Everyone is changed by what the corps must do in order to break them down into light. Those who survive learn to stick to the mission briefno matter what actually happens during combat. Dietz, a fresh recruit in the infantry, begins to experience combat drops that dont sync up with the platoons. And Dietzs bad drops tell a story of the war thats not at all what the corporate brass want the soldiers to think is going on. Is Dietz really experiencing the war differently, or is it combat madness? Trying to untangle memory from mission brief and survive with sanity intact, Dietz is ready to become a heroor maybe a villain; in war its hard to tell the difference. A worthy successor to classic stories like Downbelow Station, Starship Troopers, and The Forever War, The Light Brigade is award-winning author Kameron Hurleys gritty time-bending take on the future of war.

Through most of the book, I was thinking I‘d describe it like so: “The Light Brigade is to Starship Troopers as The Black Company is to The Lord of the Rings.” And that‘s true. It‘s also true that this story contains all of the brutality that I have come to associate with Hurley‘s work. But in the end I think this might also be the most hopeful book of Hurley‘s I‘ve read. I liked it quite a bit.

🎧 Thank you Libby.

2 things. The sci-fi in this story comes from converting soldiers to light & beaming them to Mars to fight a war & time travel. Neither of these things are explained in any way.

Other than that & if you can overlook it ... the rest of the story is a bit IDK maybe YA and preachy. Neither bothered me that much.

OK if you can get beyond all of that then what‘s left is a great dystopian story with a twist at the end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️7/8

I'm starting to realise that I dislike re-imagings. The basis of this story is very Starship Troopers and I found it very difficult to get excited about the first 15%. However once it started to diverge into the original part, an interesting time travel story, I found it a very enjoyable read. A 4 out of 5.

April books read, only four. There were some beefier titles this month and I‘m in the midst of the chunky Ducks, Newburyport on audio. Those are my excuses, professor! #aprilwrapup

vivastory I need to read that Kameron Hurley. I love her series 5y

I had a few minutes left in THE LIGHT BRIGADE after Casey‘s walk last night, so I did some #audiocrafting! My reusable face pads now live in a nice origami box instead or an ugly glass jar.

On the whole, I enjoyed TLB a lot. Hurley takes the story in some interesting directions as it barrels toward a great ending. I still liked THE CITY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT better, but I won‘t be upset if this wins the Hugo.

xicanti I read this via Scribd and want to comment on their “unlimited” audiobook offerings for voracious listeners who‘re considering membership. TLB was my 7th Scribd audio. After my 3rd, they locked me out of any audios I‘d added to my Saved Books, all audios by those authors, and anything they deemed similar. I was able to listen to 4 more titles after that, but now I‘m locked out of all but self help and their Scribd Originals. 5y
BookishMe This is during the trial membership? I am highly tempted to sign up for the monthly subscription 5y
xicanti @BookishMe I‘m still in my free month, but a friend who‘s a longtime subscriber has also run up against their audiobook limits. Still, seven in a month isn‘t so bad—and they haven‘t shown any sign of limiting my ebook access, even though I‘ve downloaded a ton. 5y

BookishMe I don't listen to audiobooks all that much (but that seems to be a big pull for other Scribd users) I hardly download ebooks either ;o so, only after the unlimited trial ended, it occurred to me that I should have downloaded at least couple of titles that I want to continue and finish 🤦🏾‍♀️😬 I thought I saw another free month limited trial but I may be wrong. But I am prepared to pay as its a great app. 5y
xicanti @BookishMe I know they offered a free trial with no credit card required for a little while, but that was over by the time I signed up. I‘m 85% sure I‘m gonna keep it for another month past this. I‘ve only got 13 days left and there‘s still a lot I want to read. 5y
BookishMe 👍🏽👍🏽 Yes, it's quite a treasure trove! 5y

I did a bunch of #audiobaking for people and dogs.

I‘m glad I read some Heinlein last year, because in many ways THE LIGHT BRIGADE is in conversation with him—particularly with STARSHIP TROOPERS. I don‘t think I‘ll end up loving it, but at 62% it definitely feels like a worthy Hugo nominee.

I found the book hard to put down and the ending was full of revelations and great twists. I‘m not a big fan of military science fiction as I can do without the graphic violence and gore but the mind-bending, rapid-fire plot and payoff were worth wading through the severed limbs. I put it with other military science fiction I liked such as Forever War and Starship Troopers. It was recently nominated for the Hugo Award, so good luck to Ms. Hurley!

I can‘t recall ever seeing this word in my life, and I‘ve read in twice so far in this book!

noun:
a pouting expression used to convey annoyance or distaste.

ImperfectCJ It shows up in crossword puzzles from time to time. I like how saying it aloud makes one demonstrate the word's meaning. 5y

This novel was the March pick for The Sword and Laser book club. It is military science fiction with a twist of time travel that adds complexity to the story and characters. Well-written and intricately plotted, it also has broader themes of the relationship between labor and corporation, between rulers and the ruled. I am going to look for Hurley‘s previous novel, The Stars Are Legion.

BookBelle84 I loved this book! I was surprised how clever and well thought out it was. 5y

This one was a nope for me. The tone of voice just didn't work at all. It came across melodramatic and way too over the top.

Last year I read Hurley's short story collection, MEET ME IN THE FUTURE, which has a short story with the same name. That's the story that grew into this novel. Interestingly last year, I also read Carlo Rovelli's THE ORDER OF TIME, and some of his ideas based in theoretical physics undergird the plot, timeline, and travel abilities in this novel. ⤵️

ReadingEnvy Dietz, the main character, starts the novel covered in blood with few memories of what happened, and the story unfolds through more missions and interrogations. I found myself enjoying the philosophical discussions of corporations, autonomy, truth, and more. And as always, many thanks to sword and laser for pushing me to continue to read great science fiction and fantasy, with a podcast and thousands of readers to discuss it with.

The comparisons to Starship Troopers are spot on. This is scratching the same itch, and I dig it. Here‘s hoping it is above freezing out tomorrow so I get some listening time while the dog takes me for a walk!

This was the most fascinating and mind bending time travel book I have ever read. When people go to war with martians, one girl can jump out of order to different battles in her timeline and she begins to realize everything is not as it seems. The story was complex and so well organized that while I was jumping around time with her I was never lost. I can't recommend this book enough! First 5 star of 2020. #highlyrecommend #mustread 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I didn‘t enjoy this at all, but I can appreciate it - Starship Troopers by way of Jarhead with an unexpected sideswipe of bootstrap paradox. This is fierce in its rage to the extent of preaching in places, and visceral in the literal sense of slopping them over the page in its violence. Nonetheless, it‘s well done and I admire it - and could even see myself rereading it in future. #LitsyAToZ

shanaqui I've been guiltily looking at this one in my library pile for months and it just didn't seem like something I would enjoy. Which has been my experience with Hurley in general -- her writing is good and she's always working at her craft, but...... 5y
imyril It‘s a lot of shitting in the woods and seeing your friends get blown apart in a very bleak world. I think it does well at loyalty and as a defence of critical thinking, but ... well, it‘s as fun as it sounds :P Altho the ending surprised me, when it shouldn‘t given the commentary on hope along the way. It‘s a good bit of craft 5y

a smart, compassionate story about terrible things and deeds. lots of familiar tropes esp. if you‘ve read The Forever War. i also liked the hidden homages to it plus other similar novels like Starship Troopers and Armor. and, like i posted earlier, the end made me cry.

[edited to add mention of homages cuz i was in a rush yesterday!]

AHHHH I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT TIME TRAVEL AND THAT ENDING SO MANY. A lot of, uh, characters magically Speaking The Thoughts of The Writer (& a lot of philosophy too), and some grim images, but nothing like Stars are Legion or the originals Nyx books. So many SF references as well (my fave, perhaps, being the soldier called Omelas). 4⭐️, maybe like 4.25⭐️. #sciencefiction

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I loooove the Bel Dame Apocrypha books but haven‘t read any other Hurley. This sounds so cool though! 6y

#BookMail Pt22 I read Kameron Hurley‘s debut novel, Stars Are Legion, over a year ago now & it was the strangest story I have ever read. And I‘ve read a lot of strange stories. So I‘m hoping she lives up to the Hugo Award winning nuttiness of that. This one is about a war between us & Mars, how to get soldiers to the frontlines, they‘re broken down into light. But sometimes, they don‘t come back right. Those, the other soldiers call The Light Brigade.
