Miranda in Milan | Katharine Duckett

With Miranda in Milan, debut author Katharine Duckett reimagines the consequences of Shakespeares The Tempest, casting Miranda into a Milanese pit of vipers and building a queer love story that lifts off the page in whirlwinds of feeling. After the tempest, after the reunion, after her father drowned his books, Miranda was meant to enter a brave new world. Naples awaited her, and Ferdinand, and a throne. Instead she finds herself in Milan, in her fathers castle, surrounded by hostile servants who treat her like a ghost. Whispers cling to her like spiderwebs, whispers that carry her dead mothers name. And though he promised to give away his power, Milan is once again contorting around Prosperos dark arts. With only Dorothea, her sole companion and confidant to aid her, Miranda must cut through the mystery and find the truth about her father, her mother, and herself. Love and lust, mothers and monsters, magicians and masked balls, all delivered with Shakespearean panache. Nicola Griffith, author of Hild Miranda in Milan is somehow both utterly charming and perfectly sinister, and altogether delightful. A pleasure for any lover of romance, myth, and magic whether or not they're fans of the Bard. Cherie Priest, author of Boneshaker and I Am Princess X At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Thank you #LMPBC - I never would have picked up this book and it was great!! A fully engrossing story in 200 pages. That is my kind of read. Although the author sometimes tried to hard with her use of flowery adjectives - the book took turns being magical, spooky and romantic. I have never read The Tempest and still really enjoyed this story.

annahenke Love Nicola Griffith so intrigued by the quote on the cover! 4y

I‘ve been waffling on this, but the fact that magic would exist is enough to tip me over to stay.

An interracial wlw sequel to The Tempest.

I enjoyed this, but I had 2 issues. The beginning was slow, and everything else I wanted to linger on felt rushed. So many things could have been developed more in depth (the romance, Prospero‘s character change) had this been longer. And, this really felt like a sequel to someone‘s fanfic of The Tempest.

But I liked that the treatment of Caliban addressed some of the issues I have with canon. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

Set in Milan after the end of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Reads like YA fan fiction. This book tries to right the sexism and racism in the play. Easy fast read. Written by an LGBTQ+ author from East Tennessee. I won this book from Tor.com. I wish that I had found it a better read because on paper it should be perfect for me...E. Tennessee queer writer writing about Shakespeare characters. 2 🌟

I am pretty sure this is my win from @24in48 as I know it‘s not a goodreads win and it‘s not an arc. There was no note or shipping receipt.

It says it‘s a reimagining of the Tempest‘s consequences. It also came with two Tor buttons.

Book hangover is REAL, folks. I don‘t read many romances, and after just finishing a book* with lush prose and passion so hot the pages singed my fingers, Miranda in Milan, a sequel to Shakespeare‘s The Tempest, just couldn‘t compare.

The insta-love between Miranda and her magical maid, the flat prose, and - oof - a solid almost 50-page block of exposition near the end, were balanced somewhat by some truly lovely sentiments about Caliban.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Technically this wraps up my #SummerOfShort which was weird, wild, and very very short. I ended last summer on a clunker too. 5y

This is amazing and short enough you can read it in one sitting - I did! It looks at what I think the unavoidable questions one‘s left with after reading the Tempest - is Caliban really so monstrous? How will a girl raised on an island be Princess of Naples? Masterfully done with so much intrigue!

Emilymdxn I want to read this so badly! Will definitely get it 5y

I don‘t know why, but for the rest of the week, I‘m only going to read retellings (I really don‘t know why, that‘s just how this pile of library holds worked out. But I‘m excited). This sequel to Shakespeare‘s “The Tempest” is a great place to start!

I love this cover! It‘s a fantasy that picks up after Shakespeare‘s The Tempest, which I suppose I will have to read now. Royal intrigue, magic, maybe a queer love story...
