As much as I hate politics this was a pretty interesting read writing by an interesting and strong woman.
Emmeline Pankhurst is underrated and deserves more love and respect

Andrew65 @CarolynM @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Have to always remember the work people had to put in and the extents they had to go to, to get what they should have always had. Don‘t know about America or Australia just wish there were better options to vote for! Last election it felt like there was no viable option. 6y
CarolynM Yes, it is hard to be enthusiastic about any of them but there are some I despise more than others😂Still, what decent person would put themselves forward in the political world these days? Why would you do it to yourself or your family? 6y
Andrew65 @CarolynM Love the strategy. Let‘s vote for the one we despise least! 😂😂 6y

Mrs Pankhurst is a talented writer, descriptive and good at theatrical story telling which might explain her gift as a speaker as well. Sometimes there are too-long sections of speeches, but for the most part it is horrifying, hilarious, tragic and rousing. It makes the work that went into women's suffrage tangible and awe-inspiring.

OMG I just read about a graphic novel series on suffragettes who knew martial arts. It's a 3 volume series called Suffrajitsu, available only via Amazon kindle or Comixology. Must have!!!

Mehso-so

This is an interesting book. The story of the things that these women had to resort to and how they were punished in their fight to get to vote is shocking and should be widely known. But the way it is told can be repetitive and a little dull at times. Mrs Pankhurst was obviously a tremendously brave woman with many qualities, but in our day and age she would have been greatly helped by a seasoned ghost writer.

Me all cozy but feeling guilty with all that these poor women went through. It's a bit of a slow book for me but wow I need to know how they ended pulling this off!

Waiting for my daughter who's having an evaluation, can't help but feel amazed at the level of aggression and cruelty that the suffragettes went through. They were hurt, unfairly imprisoned, their lives threatened so that women could vote. This is not a fun and lively book, but boy is it a necessary one.

My kindle is the best thing that has happened to my insomniac self. I used to toss and turn tormenting myself thinking about things I should or shouldn't be doing for hours. Now as soon as I can't go back to sleep out comes my #ereader. Much better use of my time, and so much better for my peace of mind! #seasonsreadings2016

Can't resist one more meme. I love historical photos + meme mashups. 😂 These ladies are my inspiration for today, as well as the many other women & men that were by their sides! 🗳🙋🇺🇸

BookishFeminist @jveezer I have a feeling women will speak out in large quantities this election, and thankfully so! 8y
BookishFeminist @lemonlime799 😂😂 if it makes you feel any better, I specifically had to buy this because my wardrobe looks like I stole it from Wednesday Addams. Like I probably won't even wear white on my wedding day! But I bought white pants yesterday & this Hillary shirt specifically bc of the message & its color!! 8y
LauraBeth ❤️ this! I already voted but I'm also going to go with my hubby later - a first generation American - who got here because his parents who have no education - wanted more for him than what life in the Dominican Republic could have offered 😀 8y
BookishFeminist @LauraBeth ❤️❤️!! That's beautiful. I'm glad you guys get to share this moment together. It's a very important election for many reasons and I'm glad that so many like your husband get to have their voices heard. 😀 8y

BookishFeminist @librariana @DyAnne @BookInMyHands @Reviewsbylola @Nonaroo 💪🏼💪🏽💪🏾 Glad y'all have voted!! Virginia doesn't have early voting unfortunately unless you work out of county (which my sedentary butt does not 😆), but I'm glad I did it today instead of early. There's something nice about casting my vote on Election Day with everyone else! 🇺🇸 It helps that my poll wasn't too crowded and I live in a liberal city. 8y
Librariana Oh, I would've 💙loved💙 to've voted in person, but we live in a different state than where we have our residency, so mailed in it was 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @librariana Completely understandable! I've been in your shoes before & know what that's like. It's also satisfying to mail it off. ❤️ Just glad I got the chance to vote in person for this because it's been years!! I've been out of state for a while. 8y

A fantastic detailed account of the suffragette. Emmeline writes in a very factual unattached manner but that didn't stop me from getting attached. I could not put this down. This period in history was about way more than women getting the right to vote, it was about us females being recognised as people. What these woman achieved was amazing. Hats off to them. These woman changed history and I for one am thankful to them.

Happy bday to Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928), British political activist & founder of the Women's Social & Political Union & Women's Party. She's best known for leading the suffragette movement in England with her violent protest tactics. She promoted women's equality in public life, including the right to vote for women regardless of marriage status. Her memoir is also great & was the basis for the Suffragette movie last year. 🙋🏻 #ReadWomen
