Time Traveling with a Hamster
Time Traveling with a Hamster | Ross Welford
9 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
Back to the Future meets The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in this original, poignant, race-against-time story about a boy who travels back to 1984 to save his fathers life. My dad died twice. Once when he was thirty-nine and again four years later, when he was twelve. On his twelfth birthday, Al Chaudhury receives a letter from his dead father. It directs him to the bunker of their old house, where Al finds a time machine (an ancient computer and a tin bucket). The letter also outlines a mission: travel back to 1984 and prevent the go-kart accident that will eventually take his fathers life. But as Al soon discovers, whizzing back thirty years requires not only imagination and courage, but also lying to your mom, stealing a moped, and setting your school on fireoh, and keeping your pet hamster safe. With a literary edge and tons of commerical appeal, this incredible debut has it all: heart, humor, vividly imagined characters, and a pitch-perfect voice.

#bookhaul

Got to love second hand book shops. Most are in very good condition.

My daughter saw the tagged book on my shelf and asked to read it with me. Now we can do a readalong, I found a copy in German.

Also, if you stack German editions cover up, the words on the spines are upside down.

TheShaggyShepherd It really bothers me how I have to put my German books backwards on my shelves to be able to read the spines the same direction as my US books. 5y
julesG @IvoryLunatic Yes! Annoying to boot! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Is the one German book the Mysterious Benedict Society? That's a favorite of mine. :-) 5y

Whatever happens in the real world, in my life, around me, I can #leanon books to take me to distant places, distant times, to offer distraction, comfort, a laugh, or entertainment.

The last day of the #septemberdanes photo-challenge is nearly over in my part of the world. Thank you @Cinfhen and @Kalalalatja for this month's prompts.

Reviewsbylola I feel the same way about books. ♥️ 6y

Right. Well, other than the first two, I know nothing about these places, which is a good thing. For books 3-5 I'm going to have to read books set in those locations as I can't find any in English by native writers that I would be interested in, or can access.

Tokelau is proving difficult to find anything at all, but I shall persist. #PassportLitsy

TheKidUpstairs This one sounds pretty interesting for Tokelau. 7y
drokka Actually, that story does interest me, and there appear to be a couple of books on it, but I can't find a book version (did find ebooks though). I'll check out my used book resources at the weekend. 🙂 7y
Cortg I have a friend that was born on Laos. Her mom makes the best food! Spicy Asian 🌶 7y
Avanders What are you reading for Trinidad? My mom's from there ☺️ if you don't already have a thought, I'd definitely recommend 7y

Pickpick

I don't normally read something aimed at this young an age so I was extremely surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I thought that the tone was perfect.

Time travel is a complicated thing but the author doesn't treat the audience like they are stupid but gives us a chance to understand these complicated ideas.

This book covers some important themes including coping with grief, family and friendship.

The Waterstones Children's Book shortlist is out, and hope is a strong theme this year. Goodness knows we all need it. https://britlitblog.com/2017/02/09/today-in-brit-lit-news-8th-feb-2017/

(This book is due out in October, Random House)

A fun book about time travel, a subject of interest. Welford is a wonderful storyteller. It's a middle grade book that takes the reader seriously. A+.
