Fountains of Silence
Fountains of Silence | Ruta Sepetys
10 posts | 16 read | 44 to read
From the #1 New York Times and internationally bestselling, award-winning author of Salt to the Sea and Between Shades of Gray comes a gripping novel about Spain's "stolen babies" scandal in an exploration of identity, dignity, and the responsibility we owe ourselves to speak our truths aloud. Madrid, 1957. Under the fascist dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, Spain is hiding a dark secret. Meanwhile, tourists and foreign businessmen flood into Spain under the welcoming guise of sunshine and wine. Among them is eighteen-year-old Daniel Matheson, the son of an oil tycoon, who arrives in Madrid with his parents hoping to connect with the country of his mother's birth through the lens of his camera. Photography--and fate--introduce him to Ana, whose family's interweaving obstacles reveal the lingering grasp of the Spanish Civil War--as well as chilling definitions of fortune and fear. Daniel's photographs leave him with uncomfortable questions amidst shadows of danger. He is backed into a corner of decisions to protect those he loves. Lives and hearts collide, revealing an incredibly dark side to the sunny Spanish city. Master storyteller Ruta Sepetys once again shines light into one of history's darkest corners in this epic, heart-wrenching novel about identity, unforgettable love, repercussions of war, and the hidden violence of silence--inspired by the true post-war struggles of Spain. Includes vintage media interstitials, oral history commentary, photos, and more.

Sepetys is 4 for 4 with me. I have yet to read one of hers that doesn't pull me in. She teaches history through character-driven fiction. This one focuses on the post Spanish Civil War era and life under Franco's fascist regime. Loved it!

Sharpeipup I think this was my favorite of her books. 4y
Johanna414 I loved this one! 4y
ninergrl6 This is the only one of hers I haven‘t read yet. There aren‘t enough hours in the day! Salt to the Sea is my favorite of the other three. 4y

I listened to this audiobook mostly at work. I saw the author speak at Texas Book Festival last October and enjoyed hearing about her research process for writing YA historical fiction.

I didn‘t know much about Franco and this period of Spanish history. I liked the look at the behind the scenes life of employees of fancy hotels. Also I was very interested in the descriptions of creating the costumes for bullfighters. Great characters too. 👍👍

erzascarletbookgasm I‘m putting this further up my tbr! 👍 5y
kspenmoll Nice review! 5y
Hooked_on_books I‘ve read one of hers on audio (Between Shades of Grey), which was incredible and devastating. But I shied away from this one since it‘s billed as romance and I don‘t tend to enjoy those. How romancy did you find it? 5y
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books the romance is definitely the focus. But there‘s enough meat on the story‘s bones that I still enjoyed it. 5y
Hooked_on_books Yeah, I thought it might be. She‘s a good writer and can create a compelling story but I just think this one is outside my preference. Oh well, I‘ll wait for her next one! 5y

Combo #BookReport #WeeklyForecast. With Fire on High 5🌟-The Kiss Quotient was ok but not my cup of tea-Deathless Divide 4 🌟 🧟‍♀️ are not really my thing but I loved Dread Nation and this sequel on audio.

Hoping to finish this week for #ReadingEurope2020 - The 100 Year Old Man and The Fountains of Silence, for #BBRC Cinder and We Were the Lucky Ones off my remaining #NewYearWhoDis list.

I‘ve read 20 📚so far this year due to Litsy challenges

This is my first book that I've read by Leigh Bardugo, I througholy enjoyed it. This novel was very well written and it was suspenseful and amazing. Galaxy Stern is a complex, well developed character and one of my favorite new book characters of the year. I love her fearlessness and her sardonic humor.

Set during a turbulent time in Spanish history I knew little about. I found this a fascinating and highly interesting read. It‘s beautifully written and well researched, combining historical fact with fiction to make an absorbing and captivating tale with some believable and likeable characters. And the ending just ties it all up wonderfully! This is the first book I‘ve read by Ruta Sepetys and it won‘t be my last. Highly recommended.
