The Ventriloquists
The Ventriloquists | E.R. Ramzipoor
13 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 11 to read
In this triumphant debut inspired by true events, a ragtag gang of journalists and resistance fighters risk everything for an elaborate scheme to undermine the Reich. Brussels, 1943. Twelve-year-old street orphan Helene survives by living as a boy and selling copies of the countrys most popular newspaper, Le Soir, now turned into Nazi propaganda. Helenes entire world changes when she befriends a rogue journalist, Marc Aubrion, who draws her into a secret network publishing dissident underground newspapers. Aubrions unbridled creativity and linguistic genius attract the attention of August Wolff, a high-ranking Nazi official tasked with swaying public opinion against the Allies. Wolff captures Aubrion and his comrades and gives them an impossible choice: use the newspaper to paint the Allies as monsters, or be killed. Faced with no decision at all, Aubrion has a brilliant idea: they will pretend to do the Nazis bidding, but instead they will publish a fake edition of Le Soir that pokes fun at Hitler and Stalingiving power back to the Belgians by daring to laugh in the face of their oppressors. The ventriloquists have agreed to die for a joke, and they have only eighteen days to tell it. Told with dazzling scope, taut prose and devastating emotion, The Ventriloquists illuminates the extraordinary acts of courage by ordinary people forgotten by historyunlikely heroes who went to extreme lengths to orchestrate the most stunning feat of journalism in modern history.

DrexEdit Whoa! Just when you think you've seen all the printer mistakes you could ever see... 2y
DrexEdit I can't even figure out how this was done! If the press pulled two sheets then when the book went to trimming, the text on the page would be wrongly fitted. I wonder if there is a similar page like this roughly the same number of pages from the back of the book? 2y

I browsed bookstores downtown today for the first time in years. It was heavenly and I got caught up and bought the tagged book and a new bookmark (though I needed neither strictly speaking)

BookNAround That bookmark is precious! 2y

This was good. Don't let the title fool you into thinking it's lame. It's about a group working to put out a satirical version of the Nazi Belgian propaganda newspaper. Inspired by something that actually happened.

#DoubleSpin done! @TheAromaofBooks

Marc Aubrion is one of my fav characters in the books because he looks and acts like a fool, but he actually #motivates other to fight and to survive ❤

I should be putting some of tomorrow‘s big meal together but I‘m not feeling it. So, since I finished my last book, I‘m digging back into this one. Only about 300 pages to go!

#TBRtemptation post 1! A recent release. Based on a true story. Belgium, 1943. A group of journalists and freedom fighters set up an elaborate plot to bring down the Nazis. 12-year-old Helene befriends journalist Marc. He & his staff have been tasked with using his newspaper to make the Nazis look good, or die. They create a fake edition, and will die for the joke...in 18 days. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

BookNAround I started this one and set it aside. I should get back to it. 4y

Aargghh! I DNF 2 books this week!

1. ➡️ The writing is great but I felt that as I read on, the story is getting more depressing & there's no real plot;

2. ➡️ Scattered & fragmented storytelling. I spent most of my time re-reading pages as I have no idea which characters is talking at that moment.

So looking forward to read these two books but life is too short (or in my case, my TBR is getting big), to finish books that frustrates me!

#DNF

Bailedbailed

I hate bailing on books... but this is only my second #DNF for 2019 so far! It‘s an interesting idea, set in Belgium in WWII- a story about resistance newspapers and plots within plots. But this debut feels roughly written- the perspective and frame add confusion, and the cast of characters feels tripled in size because of inconsistent use of names! My TBR has talked me into grabbing something else!
