Evening Class | Maeve Binchy
38 posts | 38 read | 12 to read
It was the quiet ones you had to watch. That's where the real passion was lurking. They came together at Mountainview College, a down-at-the-heels secondary school on the seamy side of Dublin, to take a course in Italian. It was Latin teacher Aidan Dunne's last chance to revive a failing marriage and a dead-end career. But Aidan's dream was headed for disaster until the mysterious Signora appeared, transforming a shared passion for Italy into a life-altering adventure for them all...bank clerk Bill and his dizzy fiance Lizzie: a couple headed for trouble...Kathy, a hardworking innocent propelled into adulthood in a shocking moment of truth...Connie, the gorgeous rich lady with a scandal ready to explode...glowering Lou, who joined the class as a cover for crime. And Signora, whose passionate past remained a secret as she changed all their lives forever.... From the New York Times bestselling author of This Year It Will Be Different, The Glass Lake, and Circle of Friends, comes a novel filled with Maeve Binchy's signature warmth, wit, and sheer storytelling genius--a spellbinding tale of men and women whose quiet lives hide the most unexpected things....

My reading has been way down for the past couple of weeks - partly because I‘m halfway through Fairytale by Stephen King and not enjoying it but can‘t seem to give up. However, it‘s going to be a quiet weekend recovering from dental surgery last week and I just saw it‘s #novelnovember #readathon! I‘m going to start a new and comforting read and aim for 24 hours of reading over the next week. Might be a tall order!

Pickpick

Read this last year, but not left a review. This is one of my favourite books by Maeve Binchy, really good story which has you engrossed from the very first chapter. Great characters, great plotting and story, and also a good romance thrown in too. Cannot recommend her novels highly enough - she was a great talent. Whilst she didn‘t write series I like the way some characters pop up again in other books she wrote.

Scochrane26 I really like this one, too. My first Binchy book was Tara Road because my roommate had it on our shelf. Out of those linked books, my favorites are Scarlet Feather & Quentin‘s. I haven‘t read all of her books yet. 5y
Andrew65 @Scochrane26 i agree with those books, I also loved Heart and Soul, Nights of Rain and Stars. 5y

Pickpick

Great Binchy read! Characters are taking an evening course in Italian given by Signora and a teacher, Aidan, from the local high school. Each characters gets their own chapter. We learned about Aidan, Signora, Kathy, Bill, Connie, Lou, Laddie and Fiona. It was amazing how all the characters connected and how the Italian course brought them all together. Maeve is a master storyteller. If you have never read a Binchy book, what are you waiting for?

cathysaid Honestly, I‘m not a huge Binchy fan. But this one? I wholeheartedly enjoyed when I read it many years ago. Kismet sometimes ❤️ 5y

Discussion of Laddy Chapter

Question 3 of 3

EadieB I think Aidan and Signora are attracted to each other but I don't think they are having an affair. I think when Aidan finds out about his wife's affair then it's possible that Aidan and Signora can have a relationship. 5y
JacqMac I don‘t think they are having an affair. Yet. I think they are perfect for each other though, and I really hope they end up together. 5y
Andrew65 I don‘t think they are having an affair yet but I think they will end up together. 5y

Discussion of Laddy Chapter

Question 2 of 3

EadieB It was handled the best way possible as I think people knew of Shay's abuse because of her bruises. She should have told the truth in the beginning and just say that he was going to rape her and the death was the result of self-defense. 5y
JacqMac I think it was the only way to handle it, too. They knew what happened, for the most part. I do wish she could have stood up for herself. 5y
Andrew65 They all rather turned a blind eye to it, just the same as they did to the abuse. She should have been supported or helped before this had to happen. A good chance if he hadn‘t died she would have been killed by him at some point. 5y
Tove_Reads Sometimes bad things happen to bad people and they deserve it! 5y
cobwebmoth It drives me crazy that abuse is so easily ignored by others, even now. I'm afraid I didn't feel bad about Shay's demise. I'm glad that Laddy didn't get in trouble since he was just trying to help his sister. 5y

Discussion of Laddy Chapter

Question 1 of 3

EadieB No I don't think Rose should marry Shay because he is a drunk and he raped her. She should have told people that she was raped and had the baby and people would understand her condition. Best to always tell the truth. 5y
JacqMac This was so sad. I agree with @EadieB she should have told people. But abused women so often don‘t. 5y
Andrew65 Marrying your rapist 😢, this made me so sad and so annoyed. Felt so sorry for the life she had having once been a nurse. 5y

Tove_Reads Nope, never. What a piece of shite he was. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Don‘t mince your words. 😂 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Sometimes it‘s the only way to do it... 5y

Been snowed under with work this week so a bit behind on the #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead 🙈. I hope to get caught up over the weekend.

EadieB @Andrew65 No problem! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I keep saying it‘s busy, only seems to get worse each week, never a quite time these days it seems. Three weeks left and got 400 reports to read and write my comments on in next two weeks on top of the normal workload. Thank goodness new Deputy starts in September! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Oh those dreaded reports again! 5y
See All 16 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB Yep, seem to come round so quickly! Teacher who joined us this year was staggered that I wrote a paragraph of comments on all 400! Rod for my own back, but they deserve it.🙈 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 That is impressive! But a major project! I‘m sure the parents appreciate it! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Hopefully. Every year I say I should write less but it never happens. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 You‘re always a man of many kind words! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Many words sums me up very well. 😂 Why use ten when 50 will do! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 And always very positive comments! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks I do try to be positive and encourage others. So easy to say things to bring people down. Should try to always build people up. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree! We all need encouragement! 5y
cobwebmoth I'm still terribly behind, so no complaints from me. I do hope you have some time to breathe soon, though.☺ 5y
JacqMac Well, as you know, I‘m not usually the best at keeping up either. Don‘t worry about it. I need some time to catch up with my library book before it expires. :) Good luck with the reports! 5y
Andrew65 @JacqMac Thanks, think I will need it. 😂 5y
Andrew65 @cobwebmoth Thanks, counting down, after today 15 more get ups! 5y
catebutler I hope life slows down soon for you, it sounds like a much needed break is in order. I just appreciate all the work you do for this readalong and all the others you host! Thank you!! 5y

Discussion of Connie Chapter.

Question 3 of 3

EadieB I don‘t like Harry at all. He doesn‘t want to do anything to help his marriage. He doesn‘t come home and spends all his time with Siobhan. I think Connie needs to get a divorce and leave Harry as their marriage is obviously doomed. She was right to instigate the fraud suit as Harry was using his money for himself and Siobhan and he was not being fair to Connie. (edited) 5y
JacqMac I think Harry is a selfish jerk. Connie saved his butt once and then he went and did again. She was so right to turn him in. I think it‘s divorce time too @EadieB 5y
Tove_Reads Absolutely! What an ass! 5y
See All 9 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB @JacqMac Was divorce an option in Ireland at the time of the book or was it still banned? Agree though what a total jerk and needs binning. @Tove_Reads (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Divorce was not an option until 1997. Forgot about that! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I knew it was relatively recently but had forgotten the date so thanks. (edited) 5y
cobwebmoth I think Harry is a horrible excuse for a human being. I definitely think Connie was right to turn him in for fraud. 5y

Discussion of Connie Chapter.

Question 2 of 3

EadieB I think Connie was so paranoid about her mom and dad‘s situation after her father died. Connie wanted to make sure there would be enough money for her needs if Harry‘s business failed. I think this action did set their relationship back a bit further. 5y
JacqMac I think it was a brilliant decision. But I don‘t think Harry liked it very much. I think it made him resent her even more than he already did. 5y
Tove_Reads Smart move, and she made such good, bold business is business moves that I was impressed. Maybe she should run his business 😂 5y
cobwebmoth I think it was smart. I think their relationship was over before it began. 5y

JacqMac Nope and nope. He‘s really not a very good person and Connie has such a good heart. 5y
Tove_Reads Most definitely no! She was so levelheaded regarding dating and living her own life that it was sad she ended up with him. 5y

Discussion of Lou Chapter

Question 3 of 3

EadieB Signora is not a stupid lady and she knows Lou's financial standing. After seeing the expensive emerald and the tv, it is quite obvious that Lou is involved in something bad. Hopefully Signora will be able to talk to him about not getting involved anymore. 6y
JacqMac I knew she would figure out that he was involved in something messy. I‘m hoping she can help Lou see the error of his ways. 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac @EadieB I agree, I hope Signora will help him find a way out without putting him at eminent risk of serious consequences. Nothing seems to escape her! 5y

Discussion of Lou Chapter

Question 2 of 3

EadieB Do not get involved with the next task at all. I think the best thing for Lou to do is go to the police and tell them that he got himself involved in something he wants to get out of. Tell them all he knows and then ask for witness protection. 6y
JacqMac I don‘t think he realizes that this could get him killed. I‘m a little afraid for Lou. 6y
Andrew65 If he makes a mess of a task I think there will be really dangerous, if not fatal, consequences. Don‘t see a way out. I feel England calling! @EadieB @JacqMac 5y

Discussion of Lou Chapter

Question 1 of 3

EadieB Getting involved with Robin was a very bad idea. Once you participate in their crimes, you are forever a member of their team and getting out will probably get you killed since you know too much about them. Lou should not have helped them escape from his family's robbery as it sent the wrong message to Robin. 6y
JacqMac Lou was so wrong. I agree with @EadieB And I think he isn‘t going to be able to get out of this mess so easily. 6y
Andrew65 What a mistaka to maka! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b6lW1FbSHXA He was naive and very young, but he really made some stupid decisions despite this. Like @JacqMac I cannot see how he gets out of this and feel prison calling! 5y

Kathy Chapter Discussion

Question 3 of 3

EadieB Since Kathy was the one who asked for Paul's help, I think it was a good idea. I think Ken and Fran would be happy about them getting together again. 6y
JacqMac I like it, but I‘m not sure Fran would like it. Even though it‘s what‘s best for her. 6y
Tove_Reads Might not happen otherwise, and since Kathy now know what Fran has done for her it might be time to give something back. 6y
catebutler Sometimes people like Fran need a nudge! 😊👍🏼 5y

Kathy Chapter Discussion

Question 2 of 3

EadieB I don't think it was right for Paul Malone to contact Fran. He should have had Kathy ask Fran if it was ok first. I think if Kathy told her mother that it would be important to her to have both parents come to a special event in her life, then I think Fran would be more open to this. 6y
JacqMac I think he should be a part of her life. He deserves to be. That agreement was made by his parents and he was just a kid. I agree with @EadieB If Kathy makes it known that it‘s important to her, Fran will go along with it. She wants what she feels is best for her daughter. 6y
Tove_Reads Yes, and he seems to genuinely want to be a part of her life. The situation to begin with was poorly executed by the parents, but I guess they thought it was the best thing to do. 6y
catebutler I‘m torn about this. I do think he should be able to be a part of her life if he and Kathy want a relationship, especially since Kathy sought him out. But, I do think it‘s interesting how Fran chose to honor the terms set up by his parents. If he really wanted to be involved in Kathy‘s life, I do think he could have reached out sooner. It‘s just a tricky situation, so maybe how it unfolded is the best way. I do think, “why now?”, though. 5y
cobwebmoth He was a child when she was born, so it would have been hard for him to have contact with her back then. I think he should be in Kathy's life as long as that is what Kathy wants. I feel for Fran, though. It would be natural to fear what his involvement would mean for her relationship with her daughter. 5y

Kathy Chapter Discussion

Question 1 of 3

EadieB It was a complete surprise to me that Fran was Kathy's mother but it made perfect sense the reason she was helping her to succeed in life while her grandparents were totally not interested in her. I think Kathy handled the news ok but like everyone who finds out that they have a father or mother they have not met, that is the next most important item to finally meet them. 6y
JacqMac It was a surprise to me, too. It made me look at Fran a little differently. I think Kathy handled it really well. 6y
Tove_Reads Nope, she showed a bit too much interest in her “sister”, and also letting the man of her life slip away to get her sister to get a good education... 6y
catebutler I did wonder whether she was, so I wasn‘t too surprised when it turned out to be the case. And I think Kathy handled the news quite well. 5y
cobwebmoth I had not suspected until Signora made her comment. I think Kathy handled things pretty well. 5y

Bill Chapter Discussion

Question 3 of 3

EadieB It does look like Grania is headed back to Tony. I think he is too old for her and her father would not be happy about that relationship but that‘s for Grania to decide for herself since she can‘t seem to stop thinking about Tony. 6y
JacqMac I think they really care about each other. I guess we shall see. 6y
Tove_Reads She‘s still quite angry with him because of how it all went. It would be awkward in many ways at first, but I guess with time everyone would get used to it. 6y

Bill Chapter Discussion

Question 2 of 3

EadieB I think Bill loves his sister and would look after her when their parents die. They do have group homes for people who are slow or handicapped and Olive could live in one of those homes. She may like the experience or if not then I think Bill would let her live with him. 6y
JacqMac I know many parents feel this is the best choice. And I think Bill will take care of her. But I really feel for the siblings in these situations. It can‘t be easy to think about when you‘re only in your early 20s. 6y
cobwebmoth I don't know if it's fair, but I do understand wanting a loving family member to care for her instead of an institution. 5y

JacqMac I don‘t like Lizzie either. She‘s very selfish. I do understand her a little bit better after meeting her mom, though. I hope Bill moves on too. 6y

Signora Chapter

Question 3 of 3

catebutler I‘m loving the interaction between her and Aiden. And also that her language and experience can enrich and be put to good use! I think this section of the book is what hooked me, now I‘m invested in the story! 6y
EadieB I'm glad that Signora's life is finally headed in a positive direction and going back to Ireland is a good move for her. She should have done it sooner! She is capable of making big changes in the family she is living with as seen by her interaction with Jerry. I think Aidan and Signora are good for each other. They both love Italy and languages and I think their friendship will blossom into a nice relationship. 6y
JacqMac I think they will have a good relationship, too. I believe this is where she belongs and now she can start living her life. I thought it was interesting that they thought she was a nun. She spent so much of her life cloistered. She is going to change Jerry‘s life. Teaching is her calling. 6y
Andrew65 She has such a calm persona and this seems to have had a very positive impact on Jerry and even Aidan. Signora may be exactly what Aidan needs. Could this be the right future fir him and help him to be happy with life. I think she will make a good language teacher. 6y

Signora Chapter

Question 2 of 3

catebutler I actually really rooted for her! I loved that she was independent and went to Italy. I wish she wouldn‘t have focused so much of her happiness on him, but it is understandable that she did. I think she gained so many incredible experiences and life lessons by doing what she did. It will be interesting to see what happens now that she‘s back in Ireland. 6y
EadieB Signora should never have followed Mario to Italy. That was her first mistake. Mario decided to marry Gabriella and for Signora to move across from them was so wrong. She wasted the best years of her life playing 2nd fiddle to Gabriella. She should have headed back to Ireland years ago. Her time in Italy should have been spent in Ireland trying to get back into her family's graces. I was not surprised that Gabriella confronted her to go home. (edited) 6y
JacqMac I think Signora was selfish. Mario made his choice and she should have let him go. I‘m glad that she finally stopped haunting Gabriella and her children. It was all such a waste. 6y
See All 6 Comments
Tove_Reads Strange to live for that long a life like that. Such a weird empty life in a village that didn‘t really want her there in the end. These things should not happen. She could have done such much with her life. A man like that is definitely not worth it! 6y
Andrew65 She definitely shouldn‘t have been there in the first place, but surprised to find out Gabriella knew. Was definitely right for her to go back to Ireland. 6y

Signora Chapter

Question 1 of 3

EadieB Parents should not cut their children off for any reason. They need to have an open-door policy. Young people will always do stupid things but the door should be open in order to take them back when they need to come home. It's a hard thing to accept that your children are not living according to your wishes but totally ignoring Signora's letters was very wrong. All of them need to take care of their parents equally. 6y
catebutler I definitely think she did the right thing. I think caring for an ageing parent is a choice on both ends, and should be taken seriously and respected on both ends. I definitely did not agree with how they cut her off because of choices she made, but sadly that seems to also be quite common in real life. 6y
JacqMac Her family is awful. She made the right choice. They would have just sucked her into their awfulness again. As a parent sometimes you don‘t like what your children do, but you should always love them. That‘s what being a parent is. 6y
See All 6 Comments
Tove_Reads Very strange family. Makes me wonder what happened to the parents in the past. Maybe they are just very uncomfortable wit each other, the whole family. I think it‘s good Signora finally goes on with her own life, still keeping as close ties as possible with her parents (as an obligation?), but what kind of a way is that to treat your child? 6y
Andrew65 What a truly awful family, definitely made the right decision. Fancy cutting her off totally then expecting her to come back. 6y
cobwebmoth Her family is very unkind. She tried to maintain a relationship with them and they didn't want it, so I don't blame her for wanting to keep her distance. 5y

Question 3 of 3

EadieB That was a real shock to me. I‘m glad she broke off the relationship. She would have broken her father‘s heart. I don‘t think there will be a future for Grania and Tony. (edited) 6y
JacqMac I think she‘ll be back with him. And I think they will work. But like I said, I might be wrong, I just didn‘t get the feeling that Tony is a bad guy. 6y
Andrew65 Strange relationship given the age gap and Tony‘s carousing ways. Perhaps she is what he needs to calm him down! I‘m sure she‘ll be back. @EadieB @JacqMac 6y

Aidan Chapter

Question 2 of 3

EadieB I think that Tony will have to settle down a bit with the drinking and carousing with the young girls if he becomes principal. I do think he is capable to get things done. Aiden needs to perk up his personality as he seems to be like a stick in the mud. I think the Evening Classes will be good for Aiden as something new and interesting was needed in his life. I just hope that Tony can curve his wild ways and make it work. He makes me nervous! 6y
JacqMac I might be wrong here, but I like Tony.i think he handled the situation well. I also think he will be a good principal. He‘s going to handle the administrative stuff really well. And maybe he‘ll pick up some good habits from Aiden, like learning who the kids are. 6y
Tove_Reads I guess people like A is easy to ”forget” in promotions. Everyone expects them to just stay put, they‘ll never leave, they are part of the building. People like Tony seems to do quite well in general. 6y
See All 7 Comments
Andrew65 Aidan sounds like a good foot soldier but not a leader, I agree Tony handled him well and was wise to know he needed him. However appointing Tony as the Principal with his character and what he has for up to in the past sounds like it could be a recipe for disaster! I‘m very worried for the school‘s reputation. And I sound know being on the same post crucial you are whiter than white! Fancy not even knowing who the children are!!! @EadieB @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
catebutler I‘d like to say that Tony will excel and shape up and become a good leader and model, but Binchy has this way of making characters like him stay the same, and not change for the better. I‘m looking at Circle of Friends... 🙄😬 6y

EadieB I think Aiden and Nell are in a rut. They need to start spending more time doing things together. Hopefully, it‘s not too late! Can‘t really blame anyone - just busy schedules! (edited) 6y
JacqMac I agree with @EadieB They didn‘t make their relationship a priority, and now that the girls are grown, they can feel the distance they created. 6y
Tove_Reads Sounds like so many other couples who didn‘t really invest in each other after the first few years. It‘s a habit what they‘re doing. 6y

Andrew65 Doesn‘t sound like any relationship at all, very sad when this happened. Nell doesn‘t seem the slightest bit interested in him. It feels too late for them in my opinion. @EadieB @JacqMac @Tove_Reads 6y
catebutler It‘s interesting to me how common relationships like this are. People get married, have kids and then once they become empty nesters, they don‘t know what to do or how to be together. I was always told growing up (by wise elders) that relationships take work and constant attention. 6y
cobwebmoth I feel that they're both to blame. They got caught up with their separate pursuits and ignored each other. It's sad. 5y

Aidan Chapter

Will shortly post the discussion questions for the first chapter under a spoiler alert.

Andrew65 Just noticed that should say Thursday 20th not the 10th! 😔 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 We figured that! I have about 20 more pages in the 1st chapter to read. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Quire a quick read. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Finished now! I really only had 10 Pgs left but didn‘t realize that the chapter was that short. 6y

Morning read. It‘s a really dark and cold day, so I don‘t want to do anything else. I‘m trying to keep up this time @Andrew65 😂

Andrew65 First warmish day we‘ve had in weeks. Certainly no Summer yet! Love the cup. Good luck on keeping up. I thought one chapter a day might help this for you and me! (edited) 6y

It‘s the 19th which means it‘s time for the next #MaeveBinchyRead, which this time will be Evening Class. I suggest we read one chapter a day and discuss that chapter the following day. These are the dates for the discussions. #EveningClass

Tove_Reads This is the perfect book to read in the summer! Somehow I can‘t put it down! Even though it‘s once again written from the point of view of several people the story actually moves forward as a whole. 6y
JacqMac Oh, I forgot what day it is. And my kids are still in school. I‘m not supposed to forget already. Lol I‘m starting it now. :) 6y
EadieB I read this in 2010 but I doubt I‘ll remember anything! 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB I read it in 2013, gave it 4.5 stars but can‘t really remember anything about it. 6y
Andrew65 @JacqMac They do come round quickly. When do your children finish. We finish on 19th July. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Perfect time for reading it then. Lovely sunny evening but about two weeks since we last saw the sun and it wasn‘t raining! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 We are in a pattern of rain right now for a few weeks. Can‘t wait for the sun to come back out! (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Lovely for us finally this evening after two weeks of almost non stop rain. ☀️ (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I truly am envious! 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @easieb It‘s been sunny here for a long time and apparently it‘ll continue this way. We celebrate Midsummer now, so we have a day off! 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Sounds great! 6y

Tove_Reads @Andrew65 Which one is up next? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads 😂 There‘s me still sourcing Evening Class and you‘re already thinking of the next one. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I always have to do this in advance to make sure I‘ll get a copy. 6y
Tove_Reads And it was a good thing too! There is one copy, and someone has it until July 10. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Perfect timing providing they return it. 6y

Pickpick

This was my first Maeve Binchy novel, and it will not be my last. The way Binchy connects all her characters is absolutely brilliant! I couldn't put the book down. I read with interest, caring about the problems and challenges, faced by these characters, I laughed and celebrated when they find their happiness. EVENING CLASS is a book everyone should add to their bookshelf.
