The Scarecrow
The Scarecrow | Michael Connelly
12 posts | 42 read | 15 to read
Forced out of the Los Angeles Times amid the latest budget cuts, newspaperman Jack McEvoy decides to go out with a bang, using his final days at the paper to write the definitive murder story of his career. He focuses on Alonzo Winslow, a 16-year-old drug dealer in jail after confessing to a brutal murder. But as he delves into the story, Jack realizes that Winslow's so-called confession is bogus. The kid might actually be innocent. Jack is soon running with his biggest story since The Poet made his career years ago. He is tracking a killer who operates completely below police radar--and with perfect knowledge of any move against him. Including Jack's. Bonus materials include an in-depth interview with the author about writing "The Scarecrow" along with his exciting travel photos-plus a link to an online promotional video and links within the text to a fictitious website based on the novel and a teaser chapter from his next book, "Nine Dragons."

Journalist Jack McEvoy is being downsized. Determined to go out in a Pulitzer-winning blaze of glory, he engages with a murder case to write something sensational to prove his worth. But when he finds himself on a serial killer's radar, only the actions of FBI profiler (and ex-flame) Rachel Walling save him from the killer's trap.

Investigation is pacy, but the reader knows too much too early, but also not enough about the killer to satisfy me.

I'm not sure if it's the "reporter pretending to be a detective" theme or the main characters having a job then not having a job then having a job again (maybe) or if it's just the large number of flights to and from different places that I find tiring. It's not a bad story, and the data security piece is interesting enough, but how everything unfolds feels a little tedious.

Journalist Jack McEvoy is back - though he's just been laid off and tasked with training his replacement. Determined to get one final "F you" scoop to publish on his way out the door, he starts investigating one murder only to stumble on another under-the-radar serial killer, and teams back up with FBI agent Rachel Walling along the way. It was pretty far fetched and convenient at times. Good overall but definitely not my fav Connelly. 3.5 ⭐️

swishandflick Thank you! I love how creative restaurants in NYC have been with their outdoor dining setups. And thankfully the weather has been gorgeous enough to really enjoy it! @Aims42 @RedxoHearts (edited) 4y

Not the biggest fan of this book despite being a heavy Connelly fan. The plot was fine, but multiple editing errors and poor grammar in some spots ruined the immersion. There also seemed to be a lot of build-up and not a lot of the actual climax. You don‘t get any answers until the last few pages, and even then it feels unsatisfying. Not a fan of the direction it took, and would probably not recommend this book to anyone.

TrishB @Andrew65 you too. It‘s hard times at the moment! 5y
Andrew65 @TrishB Very. School is feeling very surreal, even more so now having to tell parents to self-isolate children for a new and continuous cough. Always lots of those! (edited) 5y

Another Michael Conmolly win for me.
Up to date now on Bosch, Jack McEvoy and his new one. Guess I'm starting on the Mickey Haller series now!

hlgreenfield Connelly is one of my favourite crime writers. Just missing his newest book read all the rest. I think you'll love Mickey Haller! Some really strong books in that series in my opinion. Really interesting character. 7y
TrishB @hlgreenfield I started the Bosch ones through in offer on kindle and loved them! I travel a bit with work and they became my travel books! I'm looking forward to the Mickey Haller ones now you've said they are as good. You'll love the new one - a female Bosch 😀 7y
hlgreenfield Oh yay a female main character?? I am so excited now. I can't fault his female characters since some of the secondary female characters in his novels are really great and well developed ( I have loved some of the Bosch partners so much and was sorry some of them stopped showing up) but it was a shame to me that none of his main characters were female. I am now extra excited to get the book ( it's actually on the way! Ordered it the other day 😃 ) 7y

#currentlyreading with some lunch.
Probably only reading today as straight out to watch football later.

Reggie Can you give me an example of what you shout at a football match? Do the words blimey or bloke get used or am I watching too many movies? Does "Move your arse!!!!" Get thrown out? Or is it just a simple "let's go guys!!!" 7y
TrishB @Reggie not to much blimey or bloke 😂😂 only exceptionally swearing gets you thrown out!! Or if its racist/homophobic - glad to say clubs really getting to grips with that now, sadly that it's still said! I just prefer come on shift yourself!! 7y
arlenefinnigan @TrishB tell @Reggie what you used to sing at John Terry 😉 7y

2017 #45 mystery audio it was not bad nor was it good. At the end I just felt nothing. I would pan it because it didn't suck, it just was blah. +
