Lead from the Outside
Lead from the Outside: How to Build Your Future and Make Real Change | Stacey Abrams
A personal and empowering blueprintfrom one of Americas rising Democratic starsfor outsiders who seek to become the ones in charge Leadership is hard. Convincing othersand often yourselfthat you possess the answers and are capable of world-affecting change requires confidence, insight, and sheer bravado. Minority Leader is the handbook for outsiders, written with the awareness of the experiences and challenges that hinder anyone who exists beyond the structure of traditional white male powerwomen, people of color, members of the LGBTQ community, and millennials ready to make a difference. In Minority Leader, Stacey Abrams argues that knowing your own passion is the key to success, regardless of the scale or target. From launching a company, to starting a day care center for homeless teen moms, to running a successful political campaign, finding what you want to fight for is as critical as knowing how to turn thought into action. Stacey uses her experience and hard-won insights to break down how ambition, fear, money, and failure function in leadership, while offering personal stories that illuminate practical strategies. Stacey includes exercises to help you hone your skills and realize your aspirations. She discusses candidly what she has learned over the course of her impressive career: that differences in race, gender, and class are surmountable. With direction and dedication, being in the minority actually provides unique and vital strength, which we can employ to rise to the top and make real change.

It‘s been a busy week and not a lot of reading happening, but I did get to see Stacey Abrams here in Charlotte on Wednesday! She is an incredible person who has a bucket load of achievements, and I am sure many more to come! Definitely gave me some food for thought too, in regards to local activism.

Also, she has a children‘s book coming out soon!

Amiable Oh, that sounds like a wonderful night! Love her. 2y
AmyG Oh wow! I so admire her. 2y
alisiakae @Amiable @AmyG She is so inspiring. And I‘m excited to learn more and possibly volunteer for The New NC Project modeled after her work in GA and just launched! 2y

I am completely in awe of all Stacey has accomplished, especially after reading this. Here, she shares strategies on how she made these strides and what you can do to achieve your own goals. I loved the concrete examples she pulled from her own life and others she‘s met through campaigns. And I loved her explanations of things like work/life Jenga because it is a puzzle. 😂 A very empowering book! #hoopla

Megabooks This is my actual #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks 💜🎧 I think this may be the quickest I‘ve finished! Yay for cleaning out the garage...not really, but it makes for some quality audiobook time. 😂 (edited) 3y
Librariana I've got one of her books - Our Time is Now - as one of my BookSpinBingo selections 😊 3y
Hooked_on_books She‘s awesome! I have one of her books on hold on audio from the library. And I‘m really looking forward to her thriller! 3y

TheAromaofBooks Great progress on both BookSpin & garage cleaning!! 😁 3y
Megabooks @Librariana I read that earlier this year. It was fantastic! I learned so much, especially about voter suppression. 3y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books I have not read her fiction yet. Is there are good one to start with? And she is fantastic! 3y
Megabooks @TheAromaofBooks thanks! We got a lot done! 3y
Hooked_on_books She writes romance, which I don‘t read, but she has a political thriller coming out in May. I figure she know both writing and politics, so it‘s likely to be a solid book! 3y

Great advice on leadership from a great women ! Found out Stacey Abrams is a Trekkie! That makes her that much more awesome in my book. I picked this book because I recently took over as Vice President for the equality alliance in my city. I‘m super overwhelmed by this and don‘t know if I got in over my head . This was a refreshing and no nonsense approach to leadership for those who are not the “norm “ to lead. The underdogs and the outsiders .

Megabooks Great review! 3y
Suet624 Good for you!!! My view is that every strong woman thinks she may be over her head. I bet you'll be great. 3y
DaveGreen7777 That‘s wonderful, Ray! As compassionate and driven as you are, you‘ll do great work! 😊 3y

#staceyabrams #leadfromtheoutside #shero #blackgirlmagic #georgia #minorityleader “The temporary win and later loss seemed to agree with headline, but one of the aspects of holding power in understanding the long game-that battles add up overtime and create space for others to feel emboldened to act. And sometimes, a single act of defiance raises awareness and action.”

As others have noted, this is an awkward mix of self help and political/personal memoir. I would have preferred none of the former. She‘s great, though. I look forward to our collective future path. 🙂

Stacey Abrams is awesome, but this book is not what I was hoping for. I was hoping for a political memoir.. but it is actually more a self help book (which I should have guessed from the subtitle, but I didn‘t.) I am not a fan of this type of book where an author is all like “I‘m super successful so I‘m going to tell you what to do..” the biographical parts were good. #NFNov @rsteve388 @Clwojick

Lauranahe That‘s why I couldn‘t stand Girl Wash Your Face. It was sooooo humble-brag and “do this thing and you can be just like me!” 4y
marleed @Lauranahe On Goodreads I gave Girl wash your face 3 stars and with no written opinion. About 2 days later, I received a message from seemingly the author calling me a dickwad for not getting from the book what I should. I was afraid it would start a string of weird comments. So I changed my rating to 4 stars and then back to 3 a month later. By then there were enough ratings that mine wouldn‘t register. 4y
MelissaSue81 @marleed - I hated Girl Wash your face too. I think I have it one star.. I can‘t believe the author harassed you over it!! 4y

marleed @MelissaSue81 It was likely the publishers or whoever it is that tracks her rating. but it made me super uncomfortable. I wish I‘d taken a snapshot of it so I could post it here. Funny thing, Goodreads does not define there stars. For me 3 stars is a meh, C. But for others 3 stars is something better than that. Without a bad written review from me they really didn‘t know. 4y
TheRiehlDeal Hopefully one day she'll write a political memoir. It'd be interesting to learn more about her. 4y

I was a really caught up in local races in 2018, so hadn‘t paid much attention to Stacey Abrams. Starting this book now and wow! She is amazing!! #nfnov @Clwojick @rsteve388

TheRiehlDeal I'm not in her district, but I wanted her to win. Seems like she could have brought some much-needed change to Georgia. 4y

Finished What is the Bible and on to Lead from the Outside. I already enjoy it and find Stacey Abrams wisdom timely. Don‘t allow fear to hold you back from your ambition.

Also my steps for the day are on track to meet my #bfc #bfcr2 goals. Picture of my backyard where I get in most of my steps.

Lucy_Anywhere Wow! What a massive garden - I'm jealous. Well done on smashing your #BFC goals so far 🙌 5y
krayoncolorz @Lucy_Anywhere it was a big sell of the house. Some of that is our neighbor‘s as well. But I love being in our back yard! 5y

Some really good stuff on how to make the most of opportunities that do come your way with clear recognition of ways the system prioritizes some.
