When I looked up the origin of the phrase #BreakALeg there was a lot of uncertainty, but the most prevalent idea was that it started as a pun based on a Yiddish phrase for luck and blessings that sounds similar to a German phrase about breaking bones which fell into popular use because of evil eye type superstitions making people wary of just using the Yiddish. #IdiomInsight

IndoorDame The tagged book is in my audible queue waiting to be read both cause it looks fun and light, and cause I have a strong personal interest in evil eye superstitions. 1y

Vansa Motherwit sounds absolutely incredible, added to my TBR, great recommendation. To add to that review though,as a non-savarna non-Hindu: it would be incorrect to say that Dalit literature is stereotypically "angry and angsty". That would be like calling James Baldwin and Richard Wright " angry and angsty". There's an incredibly valid reason for the anger-literally millennia of horrific systemic, and systematic oppression(1/2) 3y
Vansa (2/2)Casteist discrimination permeates every single layer of society and every institution. Also, there isn't a sufficiently large body of work of Dalit literature given issues of access to education.Given that we have enough diverse Indian voices only since the last 30 years,it's not fair to dismiss very legitimate works about oppression as "angry and angsty". 3y

I‘m super excited to share that I had the opportunity to hang out with @shawnmooney on his BookTube show Bite-sized Book Chats recently. We had a fun time together talking about this short Audible Original production. Can‘t wait to keep stretching beyond my blog, TheBibliophage.com, into some bookish stuff like this. Thanks again for the chat, Shawn!

Watch it here: https://youtu.be/BvQ9SXUbVoo

Enjoyable, unique, and well-produced story about an Americanized daughter of Indian parents. The mom wants to arrange a traditional marriage, but daughter isn‘t having any of that. When fate steps in, this story takes a turn you‘d never expect. The superstitions of the “old country” juxtaposed with voicemail, phone calls, and texting format make for a fun and thought-provoking listen. #audibleoriginal #diverseauthors #litfluence

JudeCC It‘s amazing and heartwrenching!! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @WJCintron I‘m pretty sure it‘s your recent review that made me start it! 📚💜 3y
shawnmooney Long time no chat, Barbara! I‘ve continued following your reviews on Goodreads, though, and have recently come back to Litsy. This wee audiobook sounds great! Any chance I could coax you onto Zoom for a ten-minute chat about it for my new series Bite-sized Book Chats? Okay…now that I can get my thoughts straight let‘s do a more formal review, shall we? @WJCintron is to blame for my emotional destruction yesterday(I still love you 😝) We buddy-listened to this together thinking it was going to be a quick rom-com story to laugh our brains out to. BOY, were we wrong!! Do NOT listen to this if you‘re looking for a cheerful read. Your laughter will only last half the runtime of this ✨MASTERPIECE✨

JudeCC I AGREE!!! LOL we were totally wrong!! LOVE it though!! An AMAZING audiobook! Thanks for sharing it with me. I don't know if I could have gone through the entire thing alone. Love you! 3y

Evil Eye garnered an Audie Award for Original Work in 2020.

Usha is convinced that the Evil Eye, a curse that brings continuous misfortune, was cast upon her daughter, Pallavi, in the womb. What else could have possibly left her driven, career-oriented daughter edging closer and closer to 30 without a prospective husband?

This short audiobook is about the clash between young and old ways and Indian and American cultures And parent and child relationships. The story is mostly told through phone calls and feels almost like a play with the different characters playing their roles. I love this unique method of storytelling of this very creepy eery story. Highly recommended.

For such a short little story, it packs a punch. We are given a glimpse into a powerful family dynamic as an Indian mother in Delhi desparately tries to arrange a marriage for her daughter living in LA. Told completely in telephone conversations, the story starts off comically before turning darker toward the end. It was a lot of fun listening to this. #audibleoriginal #karma #arrangedmarriage #Indian

Started listening to this on my commute today. It's entertaining, but I have a pressing question for the Litsy community: Is it a book? I'm torn with some of these #audibleoriginal selections. It's pretty short and in an unusual format. What do you think?

Finally got around to listening to this Audible Original while #audiosouping. (Pic of Mark Bittman's hot & sour soup coming later.) Quick & very entertaining listen about an Indian mother trying to marry off her daughter & is darkly comic with a surprising twist. The narration was great done through phone & messages & made the 90-ish minutes go by quickly.

At 20 hours & 20 minutes--I may actually hit 24 hours. 🎉📚🎉

It was a quick little suspenseful story about a mom‘s love for her daughter and teaching your kids to be strong and independent. I kind of enjoyed the phone call format and really liked the characters.

Here is a picture of my dog just so I‘m not posting screenshots of audiobooks every time 🤣
