State of the Union
State of the Union: A Marriage in Ten Parts | Nick Hornby
18 posts | 22 read | 26 to read
A heartbreaking, funny, and honest look inside of a marriage falling apart and the lengths a couple would go to in order to fix it from the bestselling author of About a Boy and High Fidelity. "Hornby is a writer who dares to be witty, intelligent, and emotionally generous all at once." - The New York Times Book Review Tom and Louise meet in a pub before their couple's therapy appointment. Married for years, they thought they had a stable home life--until a recent incident pushed them to the brink. Going to therapy seemed like the perfect solution. But over drinks before their appointment, they begin to wonder: what if marriage is like a computer? What if you take it apart to see what's in there, but then you're left with a million pieces? Unfolding in the minutes before their weekly therapy sessions, the ten-chapter conversation that ensues is witty and moving, forcing them to look at their marriage--and, for the first time in a long time, at each other.

Nick Hornby is one of the few authors who can pull a story such as this one off. 10 short conversations between a husband and wife before their weekly therapy sessions offer a glimpse of what their marriage and relationship are like. I found it light and easy to read. I‘d love to watch the TV series now.

eeclayton I watched the show first and then read the book. Both are brilliant! 2y

This reads very much like a play or a script. That's fine because Hornby is a master of showing relationship dynamics through dialogue. Brilliant.

After I read this short book I was left wanting more, in a good way. I wanted to know what happened after those ten encounters.

This story is about a marriage going through turmoil due to infidelity...well the turmoil was there way before the infidelity. The story is told in ten encounters that happen in a pub before the couple‘s marriage counseling sessions.

Enjoying the waning days of my late-summer zinnias; I'm amazed they've held on this long! (That's also what I think about the main characters in this short portrait of a troubled marriage.) #currentlyreading

Yeah, I really, really should stop browsing through book supplements. 🙄

„🇩🇪Keiner hat gesagt, dass du ausziehen sollst“ is the latest book by Nick Hornby and of course I wanna read it now. Instantly.

After I recently loved “Stuff I've been reading” („🇩🇪Mein Leben als Leser“) I grew to have a crush on certain aspects of this plots and writing style again, so: I want this book now‼️

I couldn‘t wait to read this—I love Hornby and books about marriage. This is the story of Tom and Louise, and is told only during the time they spend in a pub leading up to their appointments with a marriage counselor. Their marriage is in shambles due to infidelity, but they‘ve been in crisis for awhile. How did they get here and is their marriage worth saving? It‘s a short book that will leave you wanting more, but in a good way.

Witty and self-deprecating... enjoyed this short book about a couple going through marriage counseling. The book is 10 chapters-each one set in the bar across the street from the therapist‘s office where they meet beforehand every week. It reads like a play and has apparently been adapted as tv show.

TerriGreen Hooray for short books!🙂 4y

This short story by Nick Hornby was perfect fit for this genre. It centers around a couple who have been married for a while and who are attending marital counseling. ⁣
The story is 10 chapters long equaling 10 weeks in their lives. The book is short, less than 200 pages and it was a quick and easy read. This is the first Nick Hornby novel I have read but not the last.⁣

Franny & Zooey and State of the Union were my favorites, and mostly enjoyed everything else....
9 total, 3 non fiction, 2 on audio.
The McEwan was a re-read for my book club this month, and led to a fantastic discussion....

Nobody does dialogue like Nick Hornby! Warm, funny, petty, silly and real.
It‘s a simple little book that made me laugh out loud, but also a little sad (just like real life I guess). For 10 weeks, Tom and Louise meet for a little ‘Dutch courage‘ each week at a pub, across the street from their marriage counseling sessions. We see glimpses of both the cracks in their relationship and the glue that holds them together. A perfect one sitting read.💕

Blaire Nice. I‘m in need of a one sitting read. 5y

“Well. I don‘t see passion as petrol. Something that runs out. I see it as more like, I don‘t know, something you lose. Like keys.” He picks up the pen he‘s using to do the crossword and waves it around. “Or this biro.” “Keys get found. Biros don‘t. So it‘s important for me to know which it is.” Tom doesn‘t say anything. “Keys? Or a biro?” Tom doesn‘t say anything. Louise is getting angry. “Come on...Keys or a biro!?”

Love Nick Hornby‘s humor! 😂

CarolynM I adored this! Watched it straight through. 5y
KarenUK I don‘t have Showtime so not sure when I‘m going to get to see it, but I‘m loving the book! 😊👍 @CarolynM 5y

This was a surprisingly brief book that read like a play. It examines the difficulties in a modern marriage with lots of self deprecating humor, as Hornby is known for. What held me back from loving it was how neurotic the characters were and how little we actually got to dive into their marriage, due to the book‘s short length. It felt like a missed opportunity for Hornby to tackle a common tale with more attention and depth.

I‘m always down for some good Nick Hornby so I‘m tackling this next. Just found out it was a TV show though. Anyone ever watch it? #litsyatoz #letters

I read this between July 8 & 16 and gave it 3.5 ⭐️ on Good Reads. It was an interesting read as it is about a couple who is going to marital counselling. Each chapter takes place before their session. I enjoyed Hornby‘s writing.

When I learned that Nick Hornby had a new book coming out I was excited. When I learned that it was only 144 pages my excitement dimmed and I moved it from my list of books to buy to my list of books to borrow. Silly me. Told over 10 weeks when a couple meets for drinks before their couples counseling session, this slim volume gives you an intimate, but humorous, glimpse into a marriage at a crossroad. I really want to see the Sundance show now.
