Smokejumper
Smokejumper: A Memoir by One of America's Most Select Airborne Firefighters | Jason A. Ramos, Julian Smith
8 posts | 14 read | 16 to read
A rare inside look at the thrilling world of smokejumpers, the airborne firefighters who parachute into the most remote and rugged areas of the United States, confronting the growing threat of natures blazes. Forest and wildland fires are growing larger, more numerous, and deadlier every year record drought conditions, decades of forestry mismanagement, and the increasing encroachment of residential housing into the wilderness have combined to create a powder keg that threatens millions of acres and thousands of lives every year. One select group of men and women are part of America's front-line defense: smokejumpers. The smokejumper program operates through both the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Though they are tremendously skilled and only highly experienced and able wildland firefighters are accepted into the training program, being a smokejumper remains an art that can only be learned on the job. Forest fires often behave in unpredictable ways: spreading almost instantaneously, shooting downhill behind a stiff tailwind, or even flowing like a liquid. In this extraordinarily rare memoir by an active-duty jumper, Jason Ramos takes readers into his exhilarating and dangerous world, explores smokejumpings remarkable history, and explains why their services are more essential than ever before.

Smoke jumper was a recc from @Megabooks “This is so interesting but you have to be blimmin mad to do that for a job”
The Dragon behind the glass “That is a very weird fish. It was quite interesting”
A Sock in my Stew (it‘s a memoir about deer culling in the NZ bush, something His Elderliness did in the 1950s for a while) He harrumphed “I know more about it than this guy”
News about HE below ⬇️

Centique It‘s been a big couple of weeks for His Elderliness. He had two falls - luckily he didn‘t do any more damage than a black eye and a few bandages. But his doctor had the Big Talk with him and he‘s agreed to move into “Assisted Living” which is basically a retirement unit where he‘s still independent but can get help more quickly. ⬇️ 3y
Centique A big change but he‘s already chosen where he‘s going - he moves fast once he‘s made up his mind! Next job is to clean up his cars and motorbikes for sale and get the house ready to sell, lucky I have a big family because we‘ve all got a list of jobs now. (edited) 3y
Cinfhen I‘m glad to hear your dad has agreed to move to an assisted living facility 💙It‘ll give you and the rest of the family some piece of mind 🙏🏼 3y

Cinfhen And of course now he may have extra time for reading!! Maybe he‘ll run a bookclub 😁 3y
Centique @Cinfhen wouldn‘t that be good! Or a Thursday Murder Club! 😂😂😂 3y
Suet624 Oh wow. Big moves, indeed. Good for him for seeing what‘s best for him and for your family. 3y
Cinfhen Hahaha!!! Love that idea 💡 😆 3y
Soubhiville That is big news. I hope the move goes easily. Having that closer help in case of emergencies has been a big relief for my in-laws. If he liked Dragon Behind the Glass I‘d recommend 3y
Megabooks I‘m sorry about the falls. My parents are strongly thinking about assisted living right now. I hope he is comfortable there! And yes, one would have to be mad to be a smokejumper!!!! Glad he enjoyed it. 💜 I‘m with @Soubhiville on recommending The Feather Thief. 👍🏻 (edited) 3y
MaureenMc Good luck to him! I hope the move and transition run smoothly. 💗 3y
Reggie A long time ago I used to have these elderly regulars I used to wait on at my restaurant. Their son used to come in with them sometimes. One day I asked where his father was and he had said in the hospital. While he took his mother to visit some relatives his father had fallen and stayed on the floor for 3 days until they got back. I‘m happy your father is making this decision. Maybe he‘ll start a bookclub over there. 3y
Centique @Reggie oh wow Reggie that is terrible! That poor man! My dad has an alarm bracelet which he can press and the ambulance comes so that was good. Mostly he just has to remember to stay on his walker and not wander off without it. In the new place there are lots of handrails and no steps which will help too. 3y
Centique @Soubhiville thank you it will be a relief! And that‘s a good recc except he read it last year. He gave it five stars! @Megabooks I must see if there is something else by that author. 3y
TrishB Oh that will give you some peace of mind ❤️ and he‘s made the decision. 3y
DivineDiana Good luck to your Dad and you during this transition. ❤️ 3y
Jeg Great decision. Peace of mind for everyone. Best of luck with move. 3y

What a fabulous memoir! Ramos shares his personal journey in firefighting, from a building firefighter to one who jumps out of planes to control the worst wildfires. The men and women who do this job have extraordinary fortitude and ingenuity! He also covers the history of some of the worst US wildfires and of smokejumpers from 1939 to now. All in a five-hour #audiobook that never feels rushed.

Great start to #newyearwhodis!

I‘m so glad to be paired up with @kaysworld1 on #newyearwhodis! I wanted nonfiction, and she gave me some great titles. Two I was able to get from my libraries, so I hope you don‘t mind if I may read them before January. A Woman of Firsts is coming from the UK. I hope you find something you‘re interested to read among what I chose! 👍🏻😀

Megabooks And thank you so much to @monalyisha for a great match again!! 4y

My one goal for the #superseptember was to just finish a book, any book! And I finished 5 audio books.
My favourite was Smokejumper by Jason Ramos.
Thank you @Andrew65 for letting me participate ⭐
#readathonroundup #superseptember #audiobooks #librarybooks #readingthelibrary📚⭐🐱🐈

Boooooks Smokejumper sounds good I think audios are the way to go for non-fiction for me for some reason it‘s the one genre that I take in more info in audio format 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
kaysworld1 @Boooooks it is a great book and the reading style is very soothing so bouns. I'm switching everything as much as I can to audiobook because I'm moving abroad next year to teach. I don't reread book's and once read I pass them on so I don't have excess stuff 4y
Andrew65 What a brilliant outcome. Well done 👏👏👏🙌🙌🥳🥳🥳🍾🥂🍾🥂 4y

I thoroughly enjoyed this short audio book it was only 5 hours long but fantastically read by a calm soothing voice.
The story itself was amazing I never new anything about smoke jumpers and this man tells it how it is, the good with the bad and the rest is common sense. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Question: Does anyone know a smokejumper?

#readingthelibrary #reallifestories #reading #librarybooks #bookworms #books #audiobooks

britt_brooke I don‘t know any smokejumpers, but this was a fascinating read. I sadly had never put much thought into it prior to this book, but these people deserve some recognition! 4y
kaysworld1 @britt_brooke They are the invisible hero's. I'm trying to find more books on them this has my full attention x 4y
kaysworld1 @Kenyazero I have finished the book and i was wondering if you wanted it I don't mind passing it on ☺️ xx 4y

This was a very informative book on what smokejumpers do and the training they go through. The book even mentions the fire that I was on.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Elite airborne firefighter Jason Ramos provides a brief history of wildfire fighting & the rigorous physical training smokejumpers endure. Their missions are extremely dangerous as fires can quickly jump &/or change directions. The slightest mistakes can end lives. Much like the military, this career requires special individuals. I admire and appreciate Ramos for his work, his constant drive to improve equipment, & for sharing his story.

MyNamesParadise I recently checked out the playaway device from the library! 6y
