Twelve Kings
Twelve Kings: Song of the Shattered Sands | Bradley Beaulieu
In the cramped west end of Sharakhai, the Amber Jewel of the Desert, eda fights in the pits to scrape a living. She, like so many in the city, pray for the downfall of the cruel, immortal Kings of Sharakhai, but she's never been able to do anything about it. This all changes when she goes out on the night of Beht Zha'ir, the holy night when all are forbidden from walking the streets. It's the night that the asirim, the powerful yet wretched creatures that protect the Kings from all who would stand against them, wander the city and take tribute. It is then that one of the asirim, a pitiful creature who wears a golden crown, stops eda and whispers long forgotten words into her ear. eda has heard those words before, in a book left to her by her mother, and it is through that one peculiar link that she begins to find hidden riddles left by her mother. As eda begins to unlock the mysteries of that fateful night, she realizes that the very origin of the asirim and the dark bargain the Kings made with the gods of the desert to secure them may be the very key she needs to throw off the iron grip the Kings have had over Sharakhai. And yet the Kings are no fools-they've ruled the Shangazi for four hundred years for good reason, and they have not been idle. As eda digs into their past, and the Kings come closer and closer to unmasking her, eda must decide if she's ready to face them once and for all.

#TBRPile ? In the cramped west end of Sharakhai, the jewel of the desert, Çeda fights in the pits for a living. Like so many, she hopes for the downfall of the cruel and immortal Kings of Sharakhai, but she‘s never had the power to do anything about it. This all changes when one of the asirim, the wretched creature who protect the kings, whispers long-forgotten words into her ear...

Nervous starting an unfinished fantasy epic but also pretty chuffed with this book! Hits on some classic fantasy tropes (revenge for past wrongs!) but enjoyable and intriguing even if I can‘t keep the Kings names straight...

Some pretty fantasy woven together here.

Branwen YASSSSS! I love this series so much! 😍 6y
beaconhillbooks @branwen I can see why... does it keep getting better? Thought the book really picked up when Ceden got in with the Blade Maidens. 6y
Branwen @beaconhillbooks YES. Omg, yes. It really gets better and better as the series progresses. I just recently finished the third one and I think the next one comes out in a few months! 6y

The book was a bit slow, but it hinted of so much more to come. I was in a bit of a reading slump, so it took so long to read and I could enjoy it as much as it deserved.

In the first 20 pages, it felt like the author was checking boxes with stereotypical examples of how his main character is a kickass female. Not such a bad thing. I like the trope. It just felt a little heavy handed at first. Ceda grew into a really awesome character. Kind of a slow start to the story but glad I stuck with it. Sometimes predictable, but enjoyable. Interesting world and cast. Definitely reading the next one. #fantasy #epicfantasy

#NYBirthdayGiveaway @LazyOwl

This is a newer series. In fact, the third book, A Veil of Spears, isn't out until sometime this year. Pictured here are books 1 & 2 as well as a novella.

The main character is a girl named, Çeda, and I'll tell ya...she's suuuuuuper bad ass! She pretty much makes the series worth reading.

Also, it's refreshing reading a fantasy story In a desert setting rather than the normal forests and mountains.

4 ⭐'s easy.

Here's a book a plan to read one day in the future. Which is probably what I was thinking when I got this nearly a year ago.

Rach_Reads My mum lent me her copy ages back but I haven't started it! I won the second book off Goodreads and lent it to her though so I really should get started on the series! 7y

is it really necessary to have a gratuitous sex scene when the reader is only twelve pages into your book? seriously?

Well-ReadNeck Definitely need more foreplay than just 12 pages 😜 8y
mahasoor thirteen pages at least, please! let's be reasonable here. 8y

3/5 ⭐️ Not a bad read, just didn't draw me in as well as some others have. Will add the sequel to my TBR though...

just picked this up at the bookstore because I have no self control and wanted to finish hatching some eggs (I can't believe I can say that and people just... understand. A dude from the past would be all "WHAT DEVILRY IS THIS")

Started a bit slow but the pace is picking up now. Lots of names to remember!

originalembot Also reading this. Only about half way through. Glad the pace is picking up, nearly gave up because of the slow start but I am intrigued. 8y
