Life on the Refrigerator Door is a poignant and deeply moving first novel about the bonds of love and frustration that tie mothers and daughters together. Told entirely in a series of notes left on the kitchen fridgesome casual, some intimate, some funny, some angryit is the story of nine months in the life of 15-year-old Claire and her single mother. Preoccupied with their busy separate lives, rarely in the same room at the same time, they talk to each other in a series of short snippets that reflect the daily drama of school, boyfriends, work and chores that make up their days. Yet the mundane soon becomes extraordinary when a crisis overtakes their livesa momentous change that will redefine their relationship and unfold in their exchanges on the refrigerator door. Short, powerful and unforgettable, Kuipers novel looks deep into the complex relationship between mothers and daughters, and the distances that can open up between people who live together but exist in their own worlds. Unfolding in a wonderfully simple and intimate narrative, Life on the Refrigerator Door will appeal to readers across the generations, delivering universal lessons about love.

This may not have been the most recent book that made me cry (I think it may have been Feed or a Cassandra Clare one), but it is one that never fails to make me sob.

This is a story told in post it notes between a mother and daughter, who don‘t have as much time for each other as they once did, during which time the mother is diagnosed with cancer.

LinesUponAPage Sounds like a good book. Thanks for sharing. 5y
jb72 I read that book about 2 years ago. It was extremely sad, but I felt disheartened that a mother would continue communication through notes and text when sickness is grappling her body. 5y
ElizaMarie It sounds rather interesting. Its not my genre really but... it does sound sweet. 5y
Bookworm54 @jb72 I agree with that. It seems such a shame. Surely you would try to spend more time with their loved ones when they are sick. 5y

azulaco J.D. Robb ignores this rule in her Eve Dallas novels set in the future - she is constantly referring to the mini-refrigerator as the mini-frig, also nicknamed the friggie, and I just want to throttle her every time she does it. You are a PROFESSIONAL WRITER, lady, learn the rules of phonics and then fire your editor who doesn‘t appear to know them either! 6y
8little_paws Wow I never noticed this somehow 😂 6y

A different neighbour brought me this stack for my classroom. I've read I Am Malala, it was okay, but the tagged was amazing. I haven't read the other but I'm sure my students will love them! #teachersoflitsy

ripley_reads Let It Snow is so good! I have the other John Green books too, but have yet to read them. 6y

A #QuickRead told entirely in notes left by mother and daughter to each other since their schedules are complete opposites. So highly recommended (as is a box of tissue by your side😢)

#ReadingResolutions

readherwriteher I picked this up at Value Village and was shocked to see that it was written by a lady in my province. This doesn‘t happen very often, so I knew I had to take it home with me. 7y
TheBookgeekFrau @readherwriteher Another “You won‘t be sorry” read 😊 7y

Told through notes exchanged by Claire and her mother, during the course of a year. Their story builds to an emotional crescendo when her mom is diagnosed with breast cancer.

This is a moving and portrait of the relationship between a daughter and mother. It is about how we live our lives constantly rushing, and never making time for those we love. It is also about how much can be said in so few words, if only we made the time to say them.

I've posted about this one before but it definitely fits the theme of #madeyoucrymonday This book was short and told by a mother and daughter leaving notes for each other on the refrigerator door. #epistolary format

Read this short and sweet book this afternoon. Light but dealt with some heavy themes. The story of a mother and daughter told in notes left on the red refrigerator door. I love me a good epistolary novel!

Short but poignant #epistolary book. Told entirely through short notes on their refrigerator door, a mother and daughter go through a gut wrenching crisis. I was impressed by how much was conveyed with so few words. Brilliant!

BookBabe Sounds intriguing! 8y
BookBabe About this "crisis"...is it health-related? I don't like reading about health problems. It stresses me out. Will this stress men out? Lol 8y
Debiw781 @BookBabe yes and probably yes. 8y

I listened to this one. It's worth a read, if for no other reason, then as a reminder not to do most of your communicating thru post-its on the fridge. My first reaction was disbelief, but as someone who lost her dad to illness within months as an adult, I realized how easy it is for you to never come around to getting answers to all those questions you may have. Time isn't guaranteed to any of us. Sobering reminder.

I have used this book for another challenge previously, but this prompt is a good reason to bring it back out!

Life on the Refrigerator Door is a quick read told entirely by post it notes (left on the fridge door) between a mother and daughter. Although ultimately a sad read, it is one that has stayed with me.

It only takes around 45 mins to read, depending on the amount of tears! I would recommend tissues 😭 💕

This amazing book absolutely wrecked me! It's a super quick read. I read it in a couple of hours. It starts out light and entertaining, quickly gets you invested in the mother/daughter relationship and then it just wrecks you! But it's one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read - totally worth the #PoolOfTears😭

While we are on #shortstories or #quickreads I want to recommend this.

Life on the Refrigerator Door is a powerful story about the relationship between a mother and daughter over the course of a year, during which the mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. It is told exclusively through post it notes between the two!

It is a hard read, one of the first books to make me bawl like a baby. But it is also very sweet and a must read 🙂
