Confession: I chose this volume because I like the eponymous Iron Maiden song. Luckily for me, these stories about the hardscrabble midcentury English working class were a slam dunk and I feel richer for it. Two in particular, about a defiant runner and a soldier‘s bittersweet memories of youthful adventure, were especially poignant. I like how Sillitoe doesn‘t romanticize or condemn, but rather aims for the tough, sooty truth. Kippers and all.
Meanwhile, here in Phoenix, it‘s 46 degrees and we have 5k and 10k going on.Nice now , but we have 5 months of 100 degree plus when I will be hibernating .
When a book you‘ve never heard of is mentioned in your current book and you discover it‘s a huge classic. 📚
Pretty appalling picture of me but here I am with my husband finishing our first 5K tonight!
Does anyone have any suggestions for good fiction and non-fiction books about running?
So happy to see this one!Hardcover dust jacket 3rd printing.I remember loving this book . Used to be talked about more . Often Sillitoe was referred to as a key fiction writer to understand working class Britain after the WWII. Had this in storage. Any Litten Brit care to chime in ? Love to read what you have to say about it.💕
