Ms. Bixby's Last Day
Ms. Bixby's Last Day | John David Anderson
John David Anderson, author of Sidekicked and The Dungeoneers, returns with a funny, heartwarming, and heartbreaking contemporary story about three boys, one teacher, and a day none of them will ever forget.Everyone knows there are different kinds of teachers. The boring ones, the mean ones, the ones who try too hard, the ones who stopped trying long ago. The ones you ll never remember, and the ones you want to forget. Ms. Bixby is none of these. She s the sort of teacher who makes you feel like school is somehow worthwhile. Who recognizes something in you that sometimes you don t even see in yourself. Who you never want to disappoint. What Ms. Bixby is, is one of a kind.Topher, Brand, and Steve know this better than anyone. And so when Ms. Bixby unexpectedly announces that she won t be able to finish the school year, they come up with a risky plan more of a quest, really to give Ms. Bixby the last day she deserves. Through the three very different stories they tell, we begin to understand what Ms. Bixby means to each of them and what the three of them mean to each other."

This book got me hooked and I am only on page 21! It is a little sad though. Ms bixby has ductal adenocarcinoma, which is a type of cancer that attacks the pancreas, but she told her students that she is going to “beat this thing”, and I am going to keep reading to find out if she does or not.

"Ms. Bixby's Last Day" by John DaVid Anderson. When I read this book. I thought of every teacher that has every made me feel important. In this book Ms. Bixby is one of those teachers, with the help of 3 amazing boys, they give Ms. Bixby the best last day ever! The strategies that you could use for this book are RA and S. The link that I found was www.allthewonders.com/videos/beyond-the-book-ms-bixbys-last-day/. The UDL and ELL strategy I chose

Dbenford was 3.1 (Activate or supply background knowledge) and 10 (Teach think, pair and share strategies in cooperative groups). #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

I have been putting this book off but decided to bring it on vacation. It's a must read for any teacher who wants to be a "good one". Have the tissues handy. Wouldn't recommend as a class read aloud. Would recommend for upper elementary and middle school. #campbrarian

Oh, this book! This is a beautiful story of three friends & their love of their teacher who they deem one of the "good ones." The story shares their quest to give her a perfect day. Along the way you learn about their friendship. You also learn how Ms. Bixby touched each of their lives. This is a #middlegrade read, so it will go quickly, and is worth every moment. ????? #bittersweetsymphony #lyricalapril @Cinfhen

Started this #middlegrade book last night and really enjoying it. The story is about 3 boys who want to make a special day for a teacher they love. Each chapter rotates through each of the boys telling the story.

All the feels with this one. Mid-age kids book recommended to me by a friend who is a middle school librarian. Told with alternating perspective from three 12 year old boys as they take a grand adventure, Ferris Bueller style, to give a beloved teacher a "best last day".

An emotional MG novel about 3 kids - Topher, Steve, & Brand - & their favorite teacher, who gets diagnosed with cancer. Despite the sad storyline, it's a hopeful book which shows that one person (or 3) *can* make a difference.

Great characterization, strong voice(s), lots of humor. You can't think too hard about the risks the ("stupid, punk, psycho") kids take or you want to scream, but I still loved it. Pairs nicely with raspberry cheesecake.

shanaqui Bunny! Bunny, I want to give you pets, but my bun is a jealous one. 7y
monalyisha Ha, @shanaqui I don't know if Moxie has a jealous temperament. All I know is that she prefers being an only bun. We tried to find her a husbun once. She was not having it. She met ~8 available bachelors (and a couple of bachelorettes) and was like, "Naw, mom. Can we just go home?" Maybe jealousy had a little something to do with it! 7y
shanaqui We're planning on a new bun soon and we knoooow she won't like it! But I work and study from home, so I need more company! 7y

monalyisha @shanaqui Good luck! Hopefully your bun will adjust quickly. Supposedly they're all happier with a friend (except for my little freak). 😉🐰🐰 7y
shanaqui @monalyisha Oh, she didn't like Cinnamon or Brioche (baby buns we took home from a pet shop that was selling them far too young; sadly, they didn't make it) but we're firmly telling her that her mummies know best... 😁 7y
monalyisha @shanaqui Brioche is the cutest name for a bunny! (edited) 7y
shanaqui @monalyisha The new one will be called Breakfast! 7y
monalyisha @shanaqui Nice! We have a friend with a goldendoodle named Pancake (Pancake Vicious, formally). 7y

"Epilogues don't count," Topher said. "They're just a way for authors to tack on a happy ending."

I'm calling it now: this book totally has an epilogue.

Just read this for the kids book club that I lead and Oh, I loved this book so much. The characters were complex and magnificent, it portrayed adults as not terrible and it was a total emotional rollercoaster. I'll agree with the quote on the front: Kids need it.

Ms. Bixby paraphrasing e.e. cummings in this middle-grade novel about a teacher who has made a great impact on her students. I love that the book is filled with these "bixby-isms," reminds me of Wonder. I'm scared to finish it though- think I'll need the tissues handy.

I sat in my car in the parking lot at work until I finished listening to this one, and sobbed through the ending. My school custodian offered me a hug when I finally made it inside, and I had to explain that I had just finished a really, really good book. That should tell you everything you need to know.

This one could sit alongside other tales about Great Journeys. Topher, Steve, and Brand's quest to see Ms. Bixby is as epic as the trek to Mordor or the Land of Oz. It reminded me in some ways of Stand By Me as well.

Just finished laughing and ugly-crying my way through this phenomenal book. There is fun and adventure and friendship and inspiration-a magical teacher and moments of honesty and the trickiness of life and all that comes with it. Reminds me of a little book you may have missed called...Wonder. 🙊
