A Winter Book
A Winter Book: Selected Stories | Tove Jansson
24 posts | 15 read | 10 to read
Following the widely acclaimed and bestselling The Summer Book, here is A Winter Book collection of some of Tove Jansson's best loved and most famous stories. Drawn from youth and older age, and spanning most of the twentieth century, this newly translated selection provides a thrilling showcase of the great Finnish writer's prose, scattered with insights and home truths. It has been selected and is introduced by Ali Smith.A Winter Book features 13 stories from Tove Jansson's first book for adults,The Sculptor's Daughter (1968) plus 7 of her most cherished later stories (from 1971 to 1996), translated into English and published here for the first time.

Ali Smith writes in her intro that A Winter Book "is full of stories that make art of life & celebrate the life of art", which to me is kind of a perfect summation of Jansson's work in general. The first half of this collection has short, brief sketches told from the POV of a child narrator, so it can seem deceptively slight. But it slowly builds up to something larger & wiser & profound. "The Squirrel" & "Travelling Light" are both brilliant.

batsy So much about the contradictions of human existence are condensed in those two pieces. I initially thought when I started that Jansson's stories maybe aren't up to the standard of her longer works or her Moomin books, but I finished it feeling like I've been guided through a dark & dense forest by a firm but gentle, warm hand. Thanks @CBee for this month's #TBRtarot prompt (season in the title) for inspiring me to finally pull this off the shelf! 2y
Billypar Wow, another Ali Smith introduction - she did the one for NYRB True Deceiver also. She must be a huge Jansson fan. I can't wait to read more of her work based on this review and reactions to her novels. 2y
CBee I love your review ♥️ 2y

erzascarletbookgasm Lovely review. I‘ve only read this, will read more of her. 2y
erzascarletbookgasm Also, I‘ll look up the hashtag..I must have missed the announcement. Is the challenge to read a book with a season in the title? 2y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Thank you! I definitely recommend The Summer Book and The True Deceiver plus all of the Moomins 🥰 The #TBRtarot is just a fun way to help us tackle Mount TBR 🙂 @CBee picks a tarot card each month and we pick a book from our TBR that best fits the prompt. We just started in October and the prompt was to choose a book with a season in the title. 2y
batsy @CBee Thank you! 💜 2y
batsy @Billypar Have you read The Summer Book? It's a lovely one; very different from The True Deceiver but brilliant in its own way. I want to read this next 2y
Billypar I haven't yet - True Deceiver was the first I've read of hers and still the only one so far. Given that TD was one of my favorite NYRB reads, I think I should prioritize Summer Book for my 2023 list. And Fair Play sounds good too! 2y
CBee @erzascarletbookgasm I‘ll be drawing a new card on November 1 and can add you to my tag list if you‘d like! 2y
erzascarletbookgasm I just checked my Goodreads, actually I have confused this with The Summer Book (which I have read) 😅 I haven‘t read this but I have The True Deceiver on my shelves 😊👌 2y
erzascarletbookgasm @CBee Please tag me, thanks 2y
CBee @erzascarletbookgasm you got it 👍🏻 2y
LeahBergen Great review. I should read this as I loved The Summer Book. 2y
Ruthiella Tove Jansson is one of those authors from whom I‘ve not read anything but really want to. Everyone raves about her. 2y
batsy @LeahBergen Thank you 💜 A Winter Book is kind of a misleading title, though there are scenes set in the winter. It just feels like a publishing thing. This might not hit the highs of The Summer Book but is quietly special in its own way, imo. 2y
batsy @Ruthiella I hope you give her a try! Between the Moomin books and her adult novels and stories there might be something there for everyone 🙂 2y
BarbaraBB This sounds good. I didn‘t know about it. 2y
batsy @BarbaraBB Not quite traditional short stories, but there's always something about Jansson's writing! 2y
BarbaraBB I am sure I can‘t go wrong with Jansson! 2y
TheNeverendingTBR I love this cover ❄️ 2y
batsy @TheNeverendingTBR It captures the wintry feel! 2y

Maybe the strangest reading spot I've had - we spent two nights (4pm to 7am) in this hide in Finland wilderness waiting for bears and wolverines. So I had a bit of reading time while we scanned for movement. No talking allowed either. We had success and saw both animals 😊 🐻. And I read one and a half books. (PS the hide had bunk beds, so we could sleep in shifts while the other person kept watch).

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks That‘s so cool!! 2y

I really enjoyed this collection of midwinter short stories from Tove Jansson. Perhaps I loved it less than a Summer Book, but I did love them, particularly the earlier ones bag felt more childish and dreamy.

#wintergames2020 #merryreaders @Clwojick short stories so lots of points but I‘ve got them all on the spreadsheet

Impeccable short stories. I cannot do better than Ali Smith‘s introduction in reviewing this book. It‘s a tonic. The stories, especially the winter themed ones which introduce the idea of ‘hibernation‘ familiar from the Moomins, are perfect iso reading. I love her spare language - she can convey a tone, a childish seriousness, wry humour, with beautifully crafted sentences. Wonderful on living with artists (inspired by her parents), art & nature.

This is a charming book. Very Tove Jansson, so very dark and melancholic in places, but also a lot of stories told from the innocence/honesty of a child's perspective. There are lovely descriptions of the landscape on the island and Jansson's passion for nature runs through the book, as does her fascination with the complexities of human nature.

CarolynM How are you going, Arlene? Some improvement, I hope. 5y
arlenefinnigan @CarolynM much better, thanks, cutting down on the painkillers and the physio's helping. More tired than anything, I fear I won't be awake for IDS losing his seat tonight 😉 5y
CarolynM Glad to hear it. I'll be watching the election with great interest from this distance. I wish I felt more hopeful, though. 5y

😢 I wasn‘t feeling all the love for this short story collection. There were a couple I really enjoyed, but overall they just didn‘t spark a connection. I so loved The Summer Book with the personable & developing characters, the tone, observations of island nature......perhaps my expectations were too high.

My latest £1.50 book haul. I've been lucky in this little charity shop recently. Although I'm not sure about My Absolute Darling, have heard it's pretty bleak. But for 50p it was hard to resist.

Freespirit I loved The Summer Book.. such a gentle story😊 6y

Stories which span the whole of Jansson‘s life from childish innocence to weary old age. Philip Pullman describes them: “tough as good rope,... as smooth and odd and beautiful as sea-worn driftwood, as full of light and air and wind as the Nordic summer.

We see Tove‘s growing feeling of injustice in how women were expected to behave, that residents understand the island and sea and visitors/tourists do not. So beautiful, I highlighted so much!

Bookwomble I love Tove Jansson's adult fiction. Have you read ? It's a beautiful story. 7y
Bookwomble (Just learning how these bookmarks work, and that they pop up at the end of a comment, not where you tagged it! ☺) 7y
Vikkiha @Bookwomble I haven‘t read any of her other books but definitely will. I got this because I saw a documentary a while back. She is so much more than Moomins! (Although I also love Moomins). 7y
Vikkiha @Bookwomble I don‘t seem to be able to work Litsy this morning 🤦‍♀️ 7y
Bookwomble That documentary was fantastic, want it? I love the Moomins, too, but as you say, there was so much more to her than that. 7y

GA_Bookworm07 Im with u since itll be my 5th one. I havent recieved my 4th yet. But the first three only one was an awesome gift. Kind of sad of the lack of effort people have towards my swaps. 7y
Jabberwocky @kendrastephaniekaryn right?! So much fun but not good for my wallet! @AvidBookWorm02 it's too bad that you haven't loved being a part of your swaps but I'm sure that your matches have put lots of time and effort into your gifts. 7y
GA_Bookworm07 @Jaberwocky I have actually but i can tell effort and when theres not any. Ive got pen pals who make more effort than some of these folks. Effort shows and the one where i got 3 books on to read list is the one swap i enjoyed. 7y

#litsybingo Two more for this one! The stories were originally written in Finnish and have been published by a publisher I hadn't heard of before: Sort of Books!

Making pretty good progress so far, although nothing too far out of my comfort zone yet. Music/theatre is going to be a tough one for me. 😕 Anyone have any recommendations?

Kitta Thanks @MicheleinPhilly! I moved to NYC this year so that sounds really interesting! 8y

Lovely short story collection by the author of the Moomins. Mostly set around her childhood and her life on an island in Finland, this book just makes me want to go and sit there looking out at the sea.

I especially enjoyed 'Messages' and 'The Boat'. The whole collection is perfect for the weather at the moment.
