The Care and Management of Lies
The Care and Management of Lies: A Novel of the Great War | Jacqueline Winspear
14 posts | 16 read | 4 to read
The New York Times bestselling author of the Maisie Dobbs series turns her prodigious talents to this World War I standalone novel, a lyrical drama of love struggling to survive in a damaged, fractured world. By July 1914, the ties between Kezia Marchant and Thea Brissenden, friends since girlhood, have become strainedby Theas passionate embrace of womens suffrage, and by the imminent marriage of Kezia to Theas brother, Tom, who runs the family farm. When Kezia and Tom wed just a month before war is declared between Britain and Germany, Theas gift to Kezia is a book on household managementa veiled criticism of the brides prosaic life to come. Yet when Tom enlists to fight for his country and Thea is drawn reluctantly onto the battlefield, the farm becomes Kezias responsibility. Each must find a way to endure the ensuing cataclysm and turmoil. As Tom marches to the front lines, and Kezia battles to keep her ordered life from unraveling, they hide their despair in letters and cards filled with stories woven to bring comfort. Even Toms fellow soldiers in the trenches enter and find solace in the dream world of Kezias mouth-watering, albeit imaginary meals. But will well-intended lies and self-deception be of use when they come face to face with the enemy? Published to coincide with the centennial of the Great War, The Care and Management of Lies paints a poignant picture of love and friendship strained by the pain of separation and the brutal chaos of battle. Ultimately, it raises profound questions about conflict, belief, and love that echo in our own time.

This was a lovely book. I just finished it and I‘m feeling so much emotion. I don‘t want to give anything away for my fellow #LMPBC group members, but I will say, I didn‘t find it slow-going and the last 3/4 of the book with the letters, Kezia‘s growth, and Tom and Thea‘s experience kept me turning pages. #WinterGames2020 #MerryReaders #CrushtheRush #DashingDecember #WinterSolstice #FestiveFlicks #Audioathon #ReadYourWay #BookSpinBingo

Started out slowly, but stick with it for strong characters and some very unique love ❤️ letters. The pace picked up and I very much enjoyed the semi-epistolary novel. No spoilers for my LMPBC group 😉
3/5📝s It‘s on the way to you Sharen🌹

Allylu I better get moving on my book - I'm about half way. How are things where you are, Vickie? The virus is getting worse here. It's scary. I'm behind on my #LitsyLove, too.

Wife @Allylu I‘m months behind on #litsylove I do better with that when I don‘t have so many distractions. Reading is my escape lately. We are starting a semi- lockdown today. We are seeing a surge in Covid here too. 3y
Allylu Yesterday my daughter found out that her boss‘s husband was exposed and feeling poorly, so she is FREAKING OUT about that. I‘ve been doing better reading than ever - maybe I‘m escaping, too. However, I don‘t have as much to deal with as people who actually leave their homes - self-imposed lockdown. Take care. I think of you often. 😊📚🎄 3y

Hestapleton @Wife my husband was diagnosed with Covid so we quarantining by through the end of the month. I‘ll send your book (thoroughly Lysol‘d) once we are allowed into society again! 3y
Wife @Hestapleton Oh no! I hope he recovers well and that you don‘t get it too. Just curious, any idea how he was exposed? Take care. No rush on the book, I only have a couple hundred unread books in the house to tide me over. 🌹 3y
Hestapleton @Wife we have no clue. He‘s an essential worker and tested last Monday with a negative result on Thursday. But this Monday he tested positive. We aren‘t sure if he got it at work, from a store, or from the dentist when he got his wisdom teeth removed Friday. He didn‘t start showing symptoms until Monday. We have no idea what happened. We‘ve been good about masks too. 3y
Wife I imagine it was a shock to find out. How miserable to deal with the dental work and Covid. Are his symptoms very bad? 3y
Allylu @Wife I received the book yesterday. I will add it to my stack. @Hestapleton and everyone, I found a You Tube video that tells you how to mail packages from home through PayPal. You pay the fees through PayPal and print out the label, affix it to your package and put it in your mailbox. It's great. Just look for “mailing packages from home.“ 3y
Hestapleton @Wife he‘s got cough/congestion, exhaustion, and no taste or smell. The taste and smell I think is bothering him the most actually. Dr said he should turn a corner this weekend. Assuming I don‘t get sick, I‘m out of quarantine dec 1 and will send the package out that day! 3y

A heart-breaking story of the Great War and the 2 loves of Kezia Marchant Brissenden. A slow start, but then Winspear captures you with the heart of the characters.

A bit late but this is my August TBR pile. I am halfway through both the Garner and Dyson, and enjoying both. Three Australian authors. Finished the Winspear, it crept up on me, I was sobbing by the end.

CarolynM I loved Everywhere I Look. So much wisdom in Helen Garner's words. 6y

I am a Maisie Donna fan so i wasn‘t sure what to expect with this stand-alone novel. I thought t was fantastic. I listened to the audio and the narrator did a great job with all the characters. I especially enjoyed the use of food and meals in the letters between Tom and Kezia.

#Septembowie #SuffragetteCity I need to read more books about/with suffragettes as I could only think of 2 from my stacks. In the tagged book-relationships between former best friends & sisters-in-laws are strained during WWI when one stays on the farm while her husband is at war & the other fights for suffragette causes in London. In Madame Presidentess, Victoria Woodhull was a leader in the American suffrage movement & ran for President in 1872.

I love the Maisie Dobbs series and was disappointed in this one. I felt like I was reading two different stories.

I do love the Maisie Dobbs books by this author, so I wanted to try this stand alone book.

Historical fiction set during World War One. I love the author's mystery series featuring Maisie Dobbs set in the same era. This straight up historical novel shows the contributions women made during that time both on the home front and behind the trenches. Great read.
