How to Write a Thesis
How to Write a Thesis | Umberto Eco
7 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
By the time Umberto Eco published his best-selling novel "The Name of the Rose," he was one of Italy's most celebrated intellectuals, a distinguished academic and the author of influential works on semiotics. Some years before that, in 1977, Eco published a little book for his students, "How to Write a Thesis," in which he offered useful advice on all the steps involved in researching and writing a thesis -- from choosing a topic to organizing a work schedule to writing the final draft. Now in its twenty-third edition in Italy and translated into seventeen languages, "How to Write a Thesis "has become a classic. Remarkably, this is its first, long overdue publication in English. Eco's approach is anything but dry and academic. He not only offers practical advice but also considers larger questions about the value of the thesis-writing exercise. "How to Write a Thesis" is unlike any other writing manual. It reads like a novel. It is opinionated. It is frequently irreverent, sometimes polemical, and often hilarious. Eco advises students how to avoid "thesis neurosis" and he answers the important question "Must You Read Books?" He reminds students "You are not Proust" and "Write everything that comes into your head, but only in the first draft." Of course, there was no Internet in 1977, but Eco's index card research system offers important lessons about critical thinking and information curating for students of today who may be burdened by Big Data. "How to Write a Thesis" belongs on the bookshelves of students, teachers, writers, and Eco fans everywhere. Already a classic, it would fit nicely between two other classics: "Strunk and White" and "The Name of the Rose."This MIT Press edition will be available in three different cover colors.ContentsThe Definition and Purpose of a ThesisChoosing the TopicConducting ResearchThe Work Plan and the Index CardsWriting the ThesisThe Final Draft

I have handed in my thesis!!!! I feel so relieved and 65 pages plus appendices lighter.

I know it is hard to see in the picture, but the English title of my thesis is: Rape Survivors‘ decision to report - a study of differences between reporters and non-reporters of rape.

I‘m so ready to get back to my normal reading and Litsy-ing, but first I‘m going to drink a lot of bubbly liquid and celebrate. 🍾🎉🍾🎉

Kalalalatja @JennyM @minkyb @kspenmoll @Avanders thank you! It really is the best feeling! 👌🎉 @Moray_Reads thank you so much! It has definitely made me more motivated to get out and actually do something! But I don‘t get my final grade until the end of August, so I have two months to just relax and read 🌞🍷👌 6y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB @Andrea4 @ElishaLovesBooks @Itchyfeetreader it definitely was a hard topic, but I‘m really passionated about how we treat survivors, which motivated me a lot on the tough days. But some of the stories broke my heart 💔 6y

I‘m in the hardcore editing phase of my thesis writing, but it is hard to concentrate when Denmark just scored against Australia ⚽️👏🎉

I‘m so glad I have leftover cake to celebrate with once I finish editing 😄😄

julesG Cake! Good luck with your thesis! I'm rooting for Denmark, too. 6y

Kalalalatja @Wilkie certainly! @batsy @julesG hopefully we will have a better result against France on Tuesday, but according to my bf, that doesn‘t seem very likely 😄 6y
ferskner I keep screaming "SON OF SCHMEICHEL!!!!!" 6y
Kalalalatja @ferskner it is almost uncanny how much they look alike! 6y
ferskner Yes! The US commentators kept accidentally calling him "Peter" when they'd get excited, and then they'd try to cover it by saying Kasper Peter, lol! Sure, dudes, you were intending to call him by his middle name. 6y
Kalalalatja @ferskner the Danish commentators have mostly stopped comparing him to his father, but for a while, that was all they could talk about. I‘m like, just let him do his own thing, please 🙄😄 6y
ephemeralwaltz Fun! Good luck with your editing! 6y
ferskner For sure! Although, thank goodness he's living up to his legacy! It'd be tough to be the son of someone that talented. 6y

Used my last remaining brain cycles between fever flare ups for reading a thesis proposal. It's pretty good overall. Missing a few things, but that's what proposals are for. Good job, student!

This is how most of my days look at the moment, and they will probably continue to do so for the next six month. I‘m well into working on my Master‘s thesis, and I‘m enjoying it, even though it is hard work and challenging.

ju.ca.no Good luck 😊 it is though, especially towards the end, but afterwards it‘s something to be proud of 🍀 6y
Libby1 Good luck! That looks like a tough topic 6y
TrishB It‘s all worth it! 6y

julesG Best of luck! I can say, the tagged book really helped me. Should you be writing in English and need someone to read through your thesis, let me know. 6y
JazzFeathers Best luck!! What is your thesis about? 6y
amvs1111 Good luck! Have you read James Hopper's work? He presented at work recently on the biological impact of sexual assault. Very interesting stuff. 6y
TommieMarie74 I‘m working on the same thing. (And also bought this book!) Great fun, huh? It will all be worth it in a few short months. 😅🤓🧐 Good luck!! 6y
Bindrosbookshelf Oh go you! Good luck with it all 😊🙌 6y
Avanders 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 6y
tournevis 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 6y
Kalalalatja @ju.ca.no thanks! And the end is very far away at the moment. I plan on handing it in September 1st. But I‘m so excited about my subject, so it is okay 😄 6y
Kalalalatja @Libby1 @TrishB @Bindrosbookshelf @Avanders @tournevis thank you all! I‘m so excited about my subject, so I‘m enjoying it quite a lot, but luck and good wishes are always needed 😄 6y
Kalalalatja @julesG that is so sweet of you! But I‘m writing in Danish, so at least I got the language down, now it is just the knowledge I miss 😉 6y
tournevis @Kalalalatja Being excited is what counts most. I know so many students who chose a topic they thought would help them later in their academic career and got bored, and either never finished or hated the experience, took longer, became bitter. In Academia, you have to love your topic, be a little obsessed with it, or you will sink. My students sometimes listen to me. 6y
Kalalalatja @JazzFeathers I‘m doing a survey of rape victims who report and don‘t report the rape to see if they differ on certain factors like shame, emotion regulation and social support 👍 6y
Kalalalatja @amvs1111 that sounds interesting! I haven‘t heard about it before, but I might check it out just for “fun” at some point! 6y
Kalalalatja @TommieMarie74 what a coincidence! I got the book from the library since I only use it as a bit of background material. And thank you, and all the luck to you, too! 🍀 6y
Kalalalatja @tournevis that‘s so true! I know I‘m going to spend 6 months on this (at least), so I need to be interested and invested in it! But I really want to work with rape victims when I finish, so hopefully it might help me a bit afterwards 🤞 but it is definitely interest that drives me most! 6y
tournevis @Kalalalatja 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 6y
JazzFeathers @Kalalalatja Tough one, but very meaningful. You're doing a great job! 6y
Kalalalatja @JazzFeathers it is, but it is worth it! And thank you! 6y
ju.ca.no @Kalalalatja thats great😊 I hope you‘ll manage to keep the excitement up! 💪🏼 6y
amvs1111 @Kalalalatja I hear you. It's always amusing to think about what trauma researchers and clinicians do/read for fun! Let me know if you ever decide to present your work or attend the ISTSS conference and we could have a coffee and talk trauma. For fun. 6y
LeahBergen 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Yay, you! 6y
Kalalalatja @amvs1111 that would be so exciting and fun! I will definitely be posting about it if I do! 👍 6y

My #currentread is a thesis. It's well-researched but I can't say the conclusions are any good. *sigh* Umberto Eco's book on thesis writing, however, is excellent!

julesG I second that, the Eco book on thesis writing is very good. 7y

Pickpick

As I write this review, I'm working on my first long work of fiction. I'm not writing a thesis. But this book has helped me so much. Eco writes with humor and clarity and (rare in my experience) practicality. His recommendations are based in an age of paper and typewriters and note cards, but the wisdom behind his ideas is clear. This small volume is a useful as any writing advice I've ever read.
