MWF Seeking BFF
MWF Seeking BFF: My Yearlong Search for a New Best Friend | Rachel Bertsche
12 posts | 26 read | 21 to read
When Rachel Bertsche first moves to Chicago, shes thrilled to finally share a zip code, let alone an apartment, with her boyfriend. But shortly after getting married, Bertsche realizes that her new life is missing one thing: friends. Sure, she has plenty of BFFsin New York and San Francisco and Boston and Washington, D.C. Still, in her adopted hometown, theres no one to call at the last minute for girl talk over brunch or a reality-TV marathon over a bottle of wine. Taking matters into her own hands, Bertsche develops a plan: Shell go on fifty-two friend-dates, one per week for a year, in hopes of meeting her new Best Friend Forever. In her thought-provoking, uproarious memoir, Bertsche blends the story of her girl-dates (whom she meets everywhere from improv class to friend rental websites) with the latest social research to examine how difficultand hilariously awkwardit is to make new friends as an adult. In a time when women will happily announce they need a man but are embarrassed to admit they need a BFF, Bertsche uncovers the reality that no matter how great your love life is, youve gotta have friends. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This was an interesting book. The author was a newlywed who moved to a new city and went on a year long search to find a new best friend. Making friends as an adult can be hard and her experience showed how you have to be committed and put yourself out there. In the end she found that it was a worthwhile experience. This can apply to many things in life.

I loved the premise of this book: a married adult woman in a new city goes on a yearlong quest to find a new best friend. While I can‘t honestly say that this book blew my skirt up, I do admire the way the author put herself out there in the name of forging new friendships. I don‘t think I could do it! The writing style was fine and the author‘s sense of humor is similar to mine, so all that made for a pleasant reading experience!

RachLovesTV I loved this one when I read it, about 5 years ago! It really changed the way I thought about friendships - it takes all kinds of friends to make a happy, full life, and you can have multiple "best friends" who fill different roles in your life. 7y
RadicalReader @OriginalCyn620 what book truly blew you away as of ones you've read this year and of 2017? 7y
OriginalCyn620 @RadicalReader Off the top of my head, I‘d say Hunger, Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo, Final Girls, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. They‘re very different from each other, but pretty fabulous! 7y

OriginalCyn620 @RachLovesTV It did alter the way I think about friendships too! What I liked most about the book was all the positive changes that took place in the author. She was happier, more confident, and a friendlier person by the end of it. 7y
Soubhiville I think I‘ll look for this. I‘ve moved a lot in my life, and meeting new friends, especially people you can connect deeply with, can be really challenging. 7y
OriginalCyn620 @Soubhiville It‘s an interesting read! Making friends as an adult can definitely be more challenging. 7y

This is my #nonfiction2018 pick for February. The premise is good: an adult married woman in a new city goes on a yearlong quest to find a best friend. Plus, this has been on my #TBR forever!

🌟🌟🌟⭐⭐ This was an okay read. I wish I had been asked on a girl-date with Rachel, she sounds fun! For the book, I wish she had gone more into the individual dates themselves. I loved the research she put into this project though! I'm definitely interested in reading more by her in the future.

Making friends as an adult is hard. Time to read about Rachel's girl dates!

Meh. It was ok. Seemed to be a lot of filler from websites. Would perhaps do better with 20-30 year olds in larger cities. I understand that it is harder to connect with people in large cities. I'm thankful love and work in small towns. ⭐️⭐️-⭐️⭐️⭐️

emtobiasz This one sounds so interesting, but the reviews I've read have been so mediocre that I haven't ever brought myself to pick it up... 7y

Owlizabeth I have that bookmark! 7y

Laura317 @WhatDeeReads So far, I'm not impressed. 7y
Jinjer Shoot. The idea sounds like a good story. Where did the author go wrong? 7y
Laura317 @Jinjer It might work great for a young person in a big city. For someone my age in the country, it just seems silly. 7y
Jinjer I live in L.A. so I may need to read it when my tour of duty in small town Arkansas is over.😂 7y

#day23 #spashintosummerreading #hideandseek or just 'seeking' for this one.... I could really relate to Rachel's quest in this fun memoir... At age 32, I moved four thousand miles away from family, friends and home, not knowing anyone but my husband... so Rachel's journey to find new friends, rang many bells with me....

Smangela I haven't read this but gave it to my valentines' secret Santa! I've been wanting to read it. It's so hard to make in-person friends as an adult! 8y
Chelsey I did the same! Granted, I only moved 100 miles, but it's enough to make impromptu get-togethering almost impossible. Stacked! 8y
ValerieAndBooks Looks interesting! I've had to move to various parts of the country, following hubby's career and after every time it gets harder and harder to find new friends for a variety of reasons 🤷‍♀️ 8y

KarenUK @smangela @ValerieAndBooks @Chelsey It definitely gets harder... I worked alone, I have no kids, and I'm not a church-goer so it was really challenging to meet new people... but I eventually made some truly wonderful new girlfriends... Bookclubs worked for me! And the local English ex-pats pub! (edited) 8y
Laura317 I have this book. My friends are all family. I need a life. 8y
KarenUK @Laura317 I couldn't agree more... friends are family we choose 💕💕💕 8y

A valiant self-improvement effort, better chronicled in a blog than in a book. #bookdeal
