Learning to Swear in America
Learning to Swear in America | Katie Kennedy

A Summer/Fall 2016 Indies Introduce selection An asteroid is hurtling toward Earth. A big, bad one. Maybe not kill-all-the-dinosaurs bad, but at least kill-everyone-in-California-and-wipe-out-Japan-with-a-tsunami bad. Yuri, a physicist prodigy from Russia, has been recruited to aid NASA as they calculate a plan to avoid disaster. The good news is Yuri knows how to stop the asteroid--his research in antimatter will probably win him a Nobel prize if there's ever another Nobel prize awarded. But the trouble is, even though NASA asked for his help, no one there will listen to him. He's seventeen, and they've been studying physics longer than he's been alive. Then he meets (pretty, wild, unpredictable) Dovie, who lives like a normal teenager, oblivious to the impending doom. Being with her, on the adventures she plans when he's not at NASA, Yuri catches a glimpse of what it means to save the world and live a life worth saving. Prepare to laugh, cry, cringe, and have your mind burst open with the questions of the universe.

A sweet, funny story about a teenage Russian physics prodigy who winds up at NASA to help stop an asteroid from wiping out a good chunk of the Western Hemisphere. Along the way he gets dismissed by "colleagues", meets an artist (Dovie), visits an American high school, crashes a prom, and learns to swear in English. Plus there's a little bit about Kant. My brain immediately inserted Star Trek's Chekhov as Yuri's voice (RIP Anton Yelchin

A really fun YA about trying to stop the end of the world, and learning just what makes life worth living. I loved this.

Starting this one tonight. I'm only on page 20 and it's already delightful.

It's odd. I really prefer paper books when I'm reading in bed. I can't do ebooks on my tablet before trying to sleep.

I would give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️out of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I found it to be a little boring in the middle of the book. Overall, a fun not too deep read.

Yuri is a 17 year old Russian physicist who comes to the states in order to help NASA deal with an asteroid that is approaching earth. But no one wants to listen to a 17 year old. He meets a typical American girl and learns about a way of life completely foreign to his own. But will he ever be #backintheussr? #rockinmay Likely not because the USSR ceased to exist before he was even born.

Cinfhen Sounds like a fun read! I'm chuckling already...leave it to the Soviet's to send a 17yr old to save the USA 😂😂😂 7y

A cute YA romance, though the main female character is a bit of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. #RogueBookBingo

I just got this Kindle and Audible deal based on @amrrruuuta 'a review! 👍🏼Who can resist a book where only a 17-year-old physics wunderkind can save the world from an impending asteroid apocalypse, if only NASA would pay attention to him? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01FJ966S6/ref=tmm_kin_title_0?

Loved this! Read it in one sitting, then made my husband read it. Yuri is brilliant and clueless at the same time. It was hilarious watching him try to learn how to be a teenager while also trying to save the world.

Yuri is a 17 year old Russian physics genius who has been sent to California to help NASA stop an asteroid that's heading for Earth. He's homesick and completely clueless about American cultural norms, and the book is full hilarious moments where he's just trying to fit in or understand.

Learning to Swear in America is a wonderful, entertaining, and fun read. I loved the messages, action, and pure hilarity that ensues. I highly recommend this book as it really is full of just perfect insight of what teens deal with, no matter where you hail from. Surprisingly, the swearing isn‘t the main focus of this book, but the title does convey the need to overcome the hurdles of culture. 4 solid, falling from the sky, stars!

BOOM, BABY! This is a contemporary book with profanity and a love interest with an incomprehensible hairstyle--all not-me things--but I LOVED THIS BOOK. It's hilarious and quippy and fun but also tense (hello, the world is ending) with relatable, philosophical moments. ❤️👏🏼👍🏼☄

This pre-apocalyptic fish-out-of water story definitely had its charms. Loved the protagonist, though the love interest was a bit too MPDG for my taste. Overall a fun read if you don't mind a story with quirk.

Obviously my cat Miles loved it. And I liked it very much. Russian boy genius is tasked to save the world from approaching asteroid. Great tension building, delightful diverse characters, different point of view, would appeal to many types of teen readers.
