I found this a really compelling listen. The way she writes with such fondness & love for her family despite all their awful beliefs & her own conflicting views shone through - the passage about her Grandad near the end & the way she writes about her Mother you could tell were heartfelt. I preferred the latter half of the book when she starts to view her upbringing & the church differently but a great listen. #nonfiction2023 All About that Bass

Started Unfollow this morning, finding it difficult so we‘ll see. I know it‘s about her leaving the Church, but I‘m finding reading about the church bloody miserable!
Others are waving at me this morning.

rockpools I was just about to ask if you were starting another new series at the bottom there - but of course I started reading on Book 4, so 🙄. 4y
TrishB @rockpools 😂😂 I forgot I had any left in this one! 4y
Caroline2 Unfollow is a hard read. It‘s really frustrating. I had sympathy for her when she was a child but once she‘s older and she‘s still there it started to wind me up!!! 🤬 4y

Cathythoughts I‘m looking at the Good Samaritan... sounds good 👍🏻 4y
MicheleinPhilly I have a seething hatred for her former “church” so can‘t bring myself to read this. Such a truly repugnant group of people. 4y
TrishB @Cathythoughts I have a few of his on my kindle and thought it was about time I read one! 4y
TrishB @Caroline2 @squirrelbrain @MicheleinPhilly I‘m feeling the need to scrub my brain! 4y
KathyWheeler I ended up liking Unfollow but I had a hard time reading about the church too. She kept talking about how wonderful and loving her family was, but all I saw was hate. 4y
TrishB @KathyWheeler exactly what I‘m seeing! 4y
MsMelissa Hey Trish - I‘ve just mailed you a package. Canada Post says it will take 1-3 months to arrive, so it‘s obviously making its way to you via a very slow sea turtle 🐢 Hopefully it doesn‘t actually take that long 🤞🏻 4y
TrishB @MsMelissa thank you 😘 that‘s very exciting! I have time to forget about it and then get all excited when it gets here 😁❤️ 4y
Cinfhen Unfollow is on my Kindle but it hasn‘t winked at me yet.... 4y
TrishB @Cinfhen I have very, very mixed feelings! 4y

I‘m so glad my daughter checked this out. I never thought I‘d feel empathy for anyone involved with the Westboro Baptist Church, but Phelps-Roper helped me do just that. Her account of her upbringing in that family and religion and how she came to leave was interesting and thoughtful. I admire her strength and her ability to convey the complexity of her life and her family. There are no real devils in her portrayal, only deeply flawed people.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I struggle to review memoirs, but I‘ll say this: Megan‘s voice is powerful, and not just because she found the courage to leave. Her prose is captivating and challenging at the same time. Her story is not only that of an escaped prisoner, but also of a humble champion. I love that she‘s built her own life with people who obviously make her feel safe and loved. I hope to hear more from her and recommend this book.

It was fascinating to read about the beginning of Westboro Baptist Church and what led to the picketing. What I found especially neat was how much freedom they had in those early days, and the shift that led to Megan realizing there were serious issues within the church and their beliefs. I will say, I‘m not religious and was not raised with any religion so my take is purely without those glasses on. Only as a reader.

Tough days continue. Making some good progress with this one which is a needed break from the news which is overwhelming, even up here in Canada.
I hope people are staying safe.

CoverToCoverGirl Hugs to you from this Canadian! I agree the news is just to overwhelming to even process.😞 4y
CarolynM Saw your PM's statement about racism in Canada earlier. So impressive. I wish our PM in Australia would be as honest and empathetic as that. 4y

I actually finished this 2 weeks ago but keep forgetting to post it. Although I found that it bogged down a bit at the ending, overall I enjoyed listening to Megan‘s words in her voice. The Westboro Baptist Church has long both disgusted & interested me & hearing what it was like growing up in that environment was fascinating. I do give Megan credit for realizing the damage she & her family were doing with the spewing of damnation & hate.

#Audiosouping 🍲Less than 2 hours to go in this one. I was hoping to finish it in March but the last week got away from me. Our business is deemed essential & I‘m in the office about 3 days out of the week & home the other days but at 1/2 pay as business is seriously down. Have had a week-ish of a solo pity-party but I‘m climbing out & realizing I‘m luckier than many others & I‘m gonna try again to focus on the positives (like this potato soup).

Suet624 It‘s a tough time. I‘m glad you‘re finding some positives to focus on. 💕 5y
michellelav I hope you enjoyed the soup and it brings you much comfort 💕 Stay strong 💞 5y

Back to #audiosouping to this memoir. I‘m a bit over halfway through as Megan is questioning the church & deciding to leave. The soup is a fingerling potato & corn chowder—using up some veggies I didn‘t get to this week while working. It smells really good.🤗🍲😋Finished soup pics & recipe coming later on.

Texreader Gonna need that recipe! 5y

Some #audiosouping - my usual Sunday social distancing. It‘s pouring down rain here so this Chickpea & Lemon Soup seems like perfect comfort food. It‘s from dried chickpeas so it is simmering for a couple of hours & smells delicious. It‘s hard to say I‘m *enjoying* this book, I‘m only about a third of the way in & the hateful ways of the church have to be in small doses for me but it is interesting. Finished soup pics coming later.

Starting a new audiobook today with my #audiosouping. I wasn‘t getting to this one in print so I thought I‘d try it in audio. So far it‘s interesting. The soup is going to be a potato-leek soup with garlic-herb Boursin cheese because I have 5 boxes of it from a blowout sale at work. A Boursin bounty! 😆😋🤗 Finished soup pics coming later.

Prairiegirl_reading I had to stop this one for now. It hurt my heart to hear her repeat a particular phrase over and over. I‘ll get back to it because it is interesting but for now I need something else. 5y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘ve never thought of WBC as fascinating, but to live in the mainstream as a cult is quite an accomplishment. But also, fuck them. I‘m so happy Megan Phelps-Roper left. That took immense courage. But, though this memoir starts strong, it becomes repetitive and boring. It‘s much too long. Tightened up, it would‘ve been a fantastic essay.

MicheleinPhilly All the 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼for your 2nd sentence. 5y
Hooked_on_books I‘m with @MicheleinPhilly ! 👍🏼 5y

Such a good book. Gives great insight and history into the WBC. The author does such an amazing job of telling the truth about her family without demonizing them. I am so thankful to have read this story.

From p. 260

This excerpt from the book is a bit confounding. I mean yay free speech and seeing the error of one's ways but Westboro undoubtedly engages in hate speech and Twitter amplified its voice.

MicheleinPhilly I find this “church” so abhorrent I can‘t bring myself to read this, even though she is a former member. I literally drank champagne to toast the passing of Fred Phelps. If hell exists, I hope he‘s roasting in it. 5y
EchoLogical @MicheleinPhilly @Lynnsoprano It was an okay read. I enjoyed her TED talk so I jumped at the chance to read this but after finishing it, I think I would've been okay without it. 5y

This is memoir 4 of my #nonfictionnovember memoir project. Unfollow chronicles Megan Phelps' journey out of the Westboro Baptist Church, notorious for anti-gay protests and general awfulness. ⤵️

ReadingEnvy Megan shows it from the inside (her grandfather started the church) and I think anyone interested in cults or extremism will learn a lot about the tactics used to make people behave in ways that seem so unforgivable, and also to understand the keys to helping them work their way out. ⤵️ 5y
ReadingEnvy As a person coming from a background of similar religious beliefs if not the insular committee, I sadly related to a lot of this, and some of her realizations resonated in ways I hadn't actually considered before. She likely has a long road ahead of her, still isolated from her family still in the church, and the almost 30 years of brainwashing that (trust me) surfaces in bizarre ways. ⤵️ 5y
ReadingEnvy Being raised in an extremist religion creates an internal running dialogue of doctrines and verses and teachings. Megan captures this experience in a way I've never been able to articulate. ⤵️ 5y

ReadingEnvy Her long mental journey out also comes with the realization that Westboro is not as unique as we want to believe it is, that extremism and hatred are on the rise, and I'm glad she is working to counter it from this point forward.
.
I had a copy of this book from fsg books through netgalley and it came out October 8, 2019.

LibrarianRyan May I ask what religion you were raised in? 5y
ReadingEnvy Independent christian Church, very similar in doctrine to southern Baptist without the national oversight. And my family lived in the woods, my mom didn't work, and we had a really restrictive upbringing. 5y
charl08 Powerful review. I left church at 18 (more moderate but still with evangelical leanings) but many years later still get caught out by how religion shapes the way I think, even if the conclusions I come to are very different. I really enjoy reading others experience of this - helpful. 5y
readordierachel Thanks for this thoughtful review. 5y
Centique That is so fascinating about your background Jenny. I‘ve heard you make a couple of brief references to it on the podcast too. I‘m glad there are some good books around reflecting these experiences and creating insights. I‘ll have to read it to learn more. 5y
ReadingEnvy @Centique I hope I don't talk about it too much but I do find it alters the way I read certain books (or why I can't read others like Educated) 5y
Centique @ReadingEnvy I think you‘ve mentioned it twice in three years. So that‘s not much at all! I‘m fascinated because my family are the inverse - super aetheist and a number of them frequent the same psychic on a regular basis. My liberal Christianity is seen as very conservative, plus I‘m the stick in the mud who likes science 😂😂 5y
Centique @ReadingEnvy I can certainly understand why it affects your experience of some books. 5y
ReadingEnvy @Centique atheists plus psychic is quite a combo 😛 5y
