Between a So-So and a Pan.

Even though I liked the other books I read by Graham Greene, this one just wasn't for me. It was to slow, even compared to his other works. The characters were interesting, but I just felt like they're not going anywhere any time soon...

Maybe my translation was just to old and I should try the original or a newer one?

TheAromaofBooks Great review!! I do think books in translation can be different depending on who does the translating! 4y
Jari-chan @TheAromaofBooks Thank you ❤️ And yes, the translation has a huge impact on how a book is told. So I might give this title another try someday. 4y

An incredible story with an amazing intertwining of characters and situations very far away from each each other as they could be in the ‘30s. #2020

Another novel needlessly renamed when published in the US (Orient Express) this was my first thought for #train #letstravelaugust @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620

Another book for my IRL book group's Graham Greene month. Intriguing story about a group of strangers on a long train journey as they reveal themselves to one another and form relationships. There is racism, sexism, homophobia and even classism, both in the story and the writing, although I felt that Greene was trying, at some level at least, to challenge preconceptions and stereotypes.

Cathythoughts Looks good !!! 👍🏻♥️ we are going to Galway to Kenny‘s bookshop for the opening of an art exhibition this weekend.. I better put the blinkers on ( No , I won‘t !!! 6y
CarolynM @sarahbarnes a That was the only one I actually intended to buy😂 6y
CarolynM @Cathythoughts that sounds like a good time. Better look more closely at the art than the books (although the books are probably cheaper😂) 6y

I really start to believe, that classics aren't the right genre for me. This book is also a so-so for me.
The story itself is quite good, but I don't get, why one lady has to leave... Of course if she doesn't leave, the end won't be the same, but it is irritating for me.
I also thought, there would be more talking about traveling .. so I was wrong again. #litsyclassics 16/26

Moony Is classic a genre? 🤔 I'm confused. 6y
BarbaraBB Really? There are so many great classics (of which you read a few this year), maybe you just chose some boring ones - like this one. I found it disappointing too. 6y
Sarah83 @Moony man sagt doch die 'Klassiker' 🤔 6y

Sarah83 @BarbaraBB of course there are many gorgeous classics but I really seem to pick the wrong ones ... 6y
Moony @Sarah83 mhhh ja irgendwie schon. Aber jeder Klassiker hat ja auch ein Thema. Dachte das Genre orientiert sich eher am Thema. 6y
Sarah83 @Moony ach so meintest du 😉 6y

The last 36 hours before my bestie gets married... I think, I won't have much reading time this weekend, so I try to finish this one asap. 🤔 #litsyclassics

After reading an ebook, I need another 'real' book and it's the next for #litsyclassics ... Anyway in German the book is called 'Orientexpress' so the mug fits better with the German translation of the tagged book. 😉 I already read the first chapter and I liked it. 😊

When the Orient Express arrived in Istanbul, the passengers were brought to the Pera Marmara Hotel. It is still there and you feel its grandeur and history upon entering. This is one of the halls, a kind of library where the passengers could read their books. Man, I‘d loved to be there at the time.... 😍

First completed book for March and my #S for #LitsyClassics. Like a faster-paced Ship of Fools, there was the closed group of strangers thrown together, the prejudice, fear of communism and anti-semitism, and the atmospheric creation of a master craftsman. Greene‘s vision is perhaps darker than Porters, but there is also much humor. The ending will bother you if you like things neatly tied up, but it‘s a pick for me. @Sarah83

Lcsmcat Also #10 for #MountTBR 7y

I started both of these today, the tagged book in print for #litsyclassics and the other in audio for my commute. @Sarah83

The first legitimate theater I saw as a teenager was a Graham Greene play, but I‘ve not read his novels. I picked this up at the library book sale to fix that. #trains #noteworthynovember @Jess7

Fun story and what a cast of characters! Greene may have been a little ahead of his time. #litsyatoz

Excellent example of Greene's entertainments.

In the train, however fast it travelled, the passengers were compulsorily at rest; useless between the walls of glass to feel emotion, useless to try to follow any activity except of the mind...
