Another belated #OokBOokClub review…

I was excited to find Pratchett using chapters in the first two Moist Von Lipwig books, and sad he was back to no chapters here. My brain likes chapters. And while I do feel the earlier books are stronger, I did really enjoy this—chapters or no. It‘s dawning on me that I‘m a sucker for a train-ride setting!

Moist continues to discover new sides to himself here, and his interplay with Adora was fantastic, ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …even if there wasn't a whole lot of it. I also liked seeing the introduction of Dick Simnel, sort of being mentored by Harry and Moist.

I‘ve really liked the Moist Von Lipwig books, and am sad there aren‘t a few more. I‘ve enjoyed seeing his character growth and the new ways his ingenuity plays out across these three books—plus the incisive social commentary Sir Terry weaves in along the way.

julesG That wish for more books by Sir Terry will never leave me. 🦧 3w
BarbaraJean @julesG Seriously. My brain also starts on a bit of bargaining... wishing I could trade the Rincewind books for more Moist and Tiffany Aching (although the Tiffany Aching arc is just about perfect). 3w

1. Sitting up. But, I do read in bed a while before falling asleep.

2. The tagged book. Great short #mystery stories, all set on trains.

I feel terrible, but I read fully half and then just couldn't go on. I was so bored! Almost every conversation was cringingly lifeless! 😩 😭

julesG You gave it your all. It's not one of his best, I'm afraid. Don't worry. We'll be reading Guards Guards in May. You can ignore Mrs Bradshaw's Handbook, it's very similar to Raising Steam. 1mo
willaful I'm looking forward to Guards Guards! Couldn't get a copy of MBH anyway. :-( 1mo
Faranae I've tried to get past the first chapter twice and it just... it isn't the Sir Terry I know. People tell me it gets better but... 1mo
willaful @Faranae It doesn't. :-( 1mo

Man, I loved this book so much! I randomly found it at a secondhand store and thought it looked interesting, and took it on summer holiday - so glad I did. An amazing adventure travelling the world, fascinating to read about the different people and experiences she and her husband had, and the massive variety between each one. Highly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This murder mystery takes place during a crime writers festival on a luxury train traveling through the Australian outback. It was highly entertaining and more than a little meta, as the narrator outlines the rules of writing a mystery while explaining the deadly events that take place on the train. I didn't realize it was a sequel but it didn't seem to matter--I will definitely pick up the first book in the near future!

RamsFan1963 If you liked the 2nd book, you'll definitely like the 1st one. I thought it was a little better, although I enjoyed both of them. 2mo

This book has left me stumped. I don‘t quite know whether it is steampunk / fantasy / eco warning or horror and I was left vaguely dissatisfied. The writing especially the descriptions of the ‘wastelands‘ was stunning and the sense of place on the train hurtling then creating through this otherworldly was great but the characters were a little two dimensional for me and following several split rather than added to a sense of what was happening!

I thoroughly enjoyed this one — steam trains, dwarves, terrorism, all handled deftly by Moist von Lipwig. Great characters, including the train Iron Girder.
