The Familiar, Volume 3
The Familiar, Volume 3: Honeysuckle & Pain | Mark Z. Danielewski
Released for the summer from the perils of school, Xanther and her nameless cat are settling into a comfortable routine at home. However, the rest of the Ibrahim family is growing more and more unsettled. Astair fears their stretched finances are already at a breaking point. Not even a visit from an old friend can mitigate Anwars feeling that hes failing to support those he loves and that even worse things are to come. The twins, Freya and Shasti, sense something too and blame their older sister. Honeysuckles haunt the air and smell of offerings . . . Meanwhile, Cas and Bobbys survival may depend on facing the one person they fear most. And on the other side of the world, Jingjing and Tian Li set out to find what was lost: their missing cat. With spectacular visuals and the vibrant wordplay that are his trademark, The Familiar (Volume 3) is a beautiful and singular reading experience that could come only from the imagination of Mark Z. Danielewski.

"Do we miss not only the past but every future the lost past describes? Is that just the nature of missing? All the lost might-have-beens? The certainty that those uncertain futures are gone?
If we can't embrace uncertainty do we miss the point of love?"

A difficult choice, but I think my #FavoriteBookCoverOf2017 is The Familiar volume 3: Honeysuckle & Pain. It‘s not your typical cover, for one thing, and for another, if you look at it from a distance, you see flowers, but they‘re actually cats. 😸

What too many rabbis, clerics, and bloggers possess. Özgür isn't sure he can take that kind of conviction anymore: when people fail to see how the world so numerously contradicts their fantasy, that just the idea of themselves carrying on such a cause becomes the most absurd fantasy of all.

The story continues right where volume 2 stopped. If you liked the previous volumes this is a sure read.

A mellower, more atmospheric entry to the series; more arranging for things to come rather than any immediate payoff (though certain surprises do come to light). Was surprised and a little bummed out to see we wouldn't be getting another volume before year's end. Definitely big things ahead for this project.

A lot of smaller conquests, lately. Now, time to get back to one of the big ones.

This is definitely my favourite of the series so far. Things are finally starting to come together a bit more...sort of. Crazy, unique, bizarre and fun. If you're a fan of his House of Leaves you should definitely embark on this journey, which is supposed to be 27 volumes in length. I'm looking forward to Vol. 4.

Jillsandypants House of Leaves has been sitting on my nightstand for months, just waiting to be read. 8y
EricaReads Awesome! I read House of Leaves last year and loved it so much! I bought the first book in this series but haven't gotten around to it yet. Your review makes me want to pick it up soon! 8y

Reviewed Vols. 1 & 2 on Wikia. Very helpful in order to pick up with volume 3. I like how the stories are starting to coalesce, with still plenty of mystery left. Another great one from MZD. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5!

Ok, I need volume 4 now! Just finished 3 and will be suffering serious withdrawals while I contemplate the next events in every character's story! I seriously can not wait!

I can not get over the young girl who questions everything, the gangster who is violent, yet smart, the parents who are concerned yet loving, the silent man in Mexico or the paranoid wizard with an orb, or addict. Each character has now be ingrained in my mind and I don't want to wait for TFv4

Fumbl3z00 It should say "or the Singaporean addict" but I ran out of blurb room :( 8y
OSChamberlain I haven't read this series yet but this man is amazing!!! House of Leaves left me speechless, and I don't have a clue how he plans to turn this into 27 volumes!! 8y

Chris @JillMoore1226 I like it a lot though I worry sometimes I'm missing things. There's a lot going on. Like House of Leaves turned up to 11. 8y
JillMoore1226 @Chris I haven't yet read House of Leaves, but it's on my list. We were just discussing it and The Familiar series the other night at book group. Several folks lauded House of Leaves as most excellent. 8y

Had a chance to met Danielewski in Texas, on his Familiar 3 book tour, and it was the best thing to happen this summer. Now, I am actually reading Familiar 3 and loving every bit of it, will be dying until 4 comes out

Ophelia hopped onto the Mark Z. Danielewski and quickly devoured the third volume of this epic adventure. There are really no words to describe this cat that cannot be named. And Xanther is probably one of Ophelia's favorite characters that she has ever read. She can't wait to continue.

"All of which quiets when she ascends, her mom and Taymor just smiling, with the attack poodle nearby in the shade, panting, all of them just waiting for Xanther's next trip down so they can start whispering again."

Christine89 Received volume 3 yesterday and now I am two volumes behind, how is it that these are being written faster than I can read them? 8y
