Catch the Jew!
Catch the Jew! | Tuvia Tenenbom
8 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
"Bluntly satirical irresistibly fascinating seductive and engaging." New York Times Hugely entertaining, terribly funny, sarcastic, engaging, powerful, accusatory, judgmental, good! National Review A literary sensation. HaaretzCatch the Jew! recounts the adventures of gonzo journalist Tuvia Tenenbom, who wanders around Israel and the Palestinian Authority for seven months in search of the untold truths in today's Holy Land. With holy chutzpah, Tenenbom boldly goes where no Jew has gone before, at times risking his life as he assumes the identities of Tobi the German and even Abu Ali in order to probe into the many stories in this strange land and poke holes in all of them. From the self-hating leftists in Tel Aviv to the self-promoting PLO execs in Ramallah, from the black-clad Haredim of Bet Shemesh to the glowing foreign human rights activists in Beit Hanina, from Jewish settlers and the Christians who come from abroad to toil with them to ardent Jerusalem monks and Bedouins in surprisingly glorious shacks, Tenenbom takes on the people of the land, getting to know them and disarming them as he breaks bread and mingles with anyone and everyone.Does Palestinian wife number one hate the Jews more than she hates wife number two? Who finances cash-rich NGOs pursuing a Judenrein Israel? Who sets Palestinian olive groves on fire and why? What is the emotional gravity that pulls idealistic human rights activists from other countries to Israel and only to Israel? Who are the flaming feminists who sacrifice their lives for the rights of polygamists? Whose land is this, anyway?By turns poignant, enraging, and laugh-out-loud funny, this unique travelogue lays bare the intensity of this turbulent land in an unprecedented, eye-opening education, person by person, city by city, and meal by meal. You will never look at Israel the same way again."

#SpringFlingReading I promise last time you EVER see this book from me! #FailedtoFinish and today I'm returning this copy to its owner. So glad I didn't spend my $ to purchase. And it turns out bookclub date has been changed and I can't even attend.

Reggie It was (not) meant to be!!!!! 8y
shawnmooney I'm curious - was it just not funny, or offensive perhaps? I don't do well with most satire... 8y
LauraBeth But it's the "#1 Best Seller of Israel"! What's wrong with you? ? 8y

Reviewsbylola 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 8y
minkyb You should send in a log of all your posts so the group knows how you felt! 8y
Cinfhen @shawnmooney 1. It was not funny 2. It was offensive to every "political" group, however u want to label yourself 3. He's meant to be an "objective" journalist but he comes across opinionated and smug 4. I don't believe he was quoting conversations in entirety, so i felt like I was only given the parts the author wanted to share, in order to mock others 5. I live here, I know it's complicated I don't need an A-hole lecturing me about it??? 8y
Cinfhen Great idea @minkyb ☺️although I've bumped into some ladies and there are two very defined camps emerging LOVE IT vs HATE IT! We obviously know where I fall @Reviewsbylola & @LauraBeth 😖I know, number 1 bestseller in Israel...another sign I'm still only a US citizen 🇺🇸🙂 8y
LauraBeth Did you ever read or see Europa Europa? I'd suggest that for your book group since there seems to be some undercover/secret identity comparisons. Bonus: Europa Europa is excellent!!! 8y
Cinfhen Never heard of it @LauraBeth will definitely seek it out, thanks 😊 8y
LauraBeth Go - run and get it today! https://youtu.be/JqMBNCo7LPE 8y
Cinfhen That trailer looks excellent, thanks @LauraBeth 💞 8y

#MarchintoReading #ReadandEat My last attempt with this travelogue. I've never really had such a strong dislike for a writer before. It may be time to put this book club book down for good 😡

TrishB I'm amazed you're still hanging on in there.....I know I won't be reading this..... 8y
Cinfhen Ha, I'm a tenacious little bugger @TrishB 😜 8y
KarenUK I feel you.. I almost always stick with my book club picks too.... but sometimes it feels like torture! 8y

ReadingEnvy Sometimes the best book club discussions are when everyone hated the book. At my book club, I have sometimes skipped when I didn't like the book, and later found out that the discussion was really fun because everyone hated it. 8y
Reviewsbylola It's time!! I vote for a bail. 😂 8y
LauraBeth I vote yes on the food and yet to bailing 😀 8y
Cinfhen You guys are the best bunch of enablers, EVER @LauraBeth @Reviewsbylola 💖I agree @ReadingEnvy differing opinions make for awesome discussions and I have a feeling this book may cause some real HEATED debates 😳it may get ugly! 8y
Cinfhen I belong to two book clubs @KarenUK one is serious readers who just do not bail and the other group who just want to drink wine and gossip...this book belongs to the non serious group who couldn't care less if I bail. It's just my own sense of guilt. 8y
saresmoore @Cinfhen I say, when in doubt, skim to the end! And your food looks deeelicious! 8y
tricours What's wrong with it? 8y
DebinHawaii I vote for at least the skimming if not bailing & your food does look delicious! 😀🍴👍 8y

Ugh 😑 I am HATING this read! I am silently cursing my book club for this one...just so glad I didn't buy the book 😖

DivineDiana Well, can't say I am a fan of the title! 8y
Reviewsbylola You're a better person than me. I have had some book club books I hav bailed on. 8y
OrangeMooseReads Based on the title I would have skipped it. 8y

Cinfhen I can live with the title although it's pretty offensive @DivineDiana @OrangeMooseReads but the smug self centered journalist/author is a whole different story 😤😤I'm on page 140, at page 200 I bail if the book is still causing me such extreme reactions @Reviewsbylola #zeroF%cks 8y
Reviewsbylola You go girl! In fact, we won't judge you if you only make it to page 150. 😂 8y
Cinfhen 😂😂😂 @Reviewsbylola 8y
OrangeMooseReads Understandable. No judgement if you bail at pg 141 lol 8y
LauraBeth Just bail on that! 8y
Cinfhen Yay @LauraBeth you're back...all ok? Missed u on Litsy!!! 8y
LauraBeth @Cinfhen I've missed Litsy! 😽 Just been running, reading and taking care of my mom - but I'm still here 💕 8y

The moment you look down and notice your toe polish is the same shade as your book cover 😜I'm having a hard time with this read so far. I find the author's tone VERY sarcastic and a little too biting for my taste. This is a book club read so I'm not bailing, yet!

Jennifer3 Book club reads can be so hard for me, I am sad to say I bailed on a few so good for you to keep trying! 8y

#17BookLove #BookDrinkILove Ahhhhhhhhh, I LOVE COFFEE! Mostly it's the aroma that heightens my pleasure, but since starting Whole30 I've been weaning myself. I only have one cup every other day, decaf and I add unsweetened almond milk that is without any carrageenan. Today is day 15, and the plan overall is definitely making a difference😊I've also been drinking the coffee iced with tons of ice cubes so it's not very strong!

Bookish.Heart Whole 30? I'm going to have to look this up! 8y
DebinHawaii Great job sticking with it! 👍😀 8y
Cinfhen Thanks @DebinHawaii your delicious posts are KILLING ME!!! Oh God do I want avocado toast and every other darn food item you create😫😫😫and today you posted Girl Scout cookies 😋😦😘 8y

Cinfhen @Bookish.Heart I was having tons of digestive issues so this was a way to try and figure out which foods irritate my stomach/body! It's not easy but it's really working. 8y
Lmstraubie You are very committed! 🙆🙆🙆 8y
Cinfhen Thanks @Lmstraubie 💗I was at the point of depression 😬 8y
LauraBeth You're halfway there! Nice job 😀☕️ 8y
saresmoore I'm so glad you're starting to see a difference! This post reminded me to stop sipping from my husband's delicious cup of locally fresh roasted pour over and switch back to my tea lest I regret it. 😒/😏 8y
Graciouswarriorprincess Great job! I don't know that I go without my coffee. But, I limit myself to two cups with a teaspoon of cream only. 8y
Cinfhen Thanks @LauraBeth @Graciouswarriorprincess ❤️Days 3 -10 were rough and my sugar beast is STILL RAGING 😐I can see /say limiting my caffeine has been monumental (because even decaf contains some caffeine 8y
Cinfhen @saresmoore I'm hoping that sips are ok every now and then RIGHT ?!?! 8y
LauraBrook I'm about 1/4 of the way into It Starts With Food, and what they say makes a lot of sense. My doctor would like me to do this, and I'm mostly willing, but it for sure takes a lot of planning and prep work ahead of time. The no dairy and no sugar are what's tripping me up the most mentally. (Though I'm sure the whole thing will be tough!) (edited) 8y
saresmoore @Cinfhen Absolutely! I can have a whole decaf Americano from my favorite coffee shop on occasion! I have acid reflux, so really have to be careful with coffee, that's all. 8y
saresmoore @LauraBrook It can be a lot of prep, but don't undervalue a hearty salad! I have become exposed to so many new ingredients/toppings and most of them can be purchased already prepped. It's a great way to get more fermented foods in your diet, too. 8y
howjessicareads I'm starting one on Wed!! Glad to hear your W30 is going well! 8y
LauraBrook @saresmoore Thanks! I'm glad there's a Trader Joe's near my office, I can always pop in and pick up some prepped good stuff. I have off all this week, so I plan on making lots of lists for things to do/make, and making a run to donate my shelf stable food to a food pantry. I'm excited to try this and also v nervous. 8y
Cinfhen @LauraBrook buy lots of bananas, sweet potatoes and tons of veggies! I would say try to keep your foods pretty simple and basic. Also whatever you prepare for dinner, make enough to last at least another meal or two. I found having hard boiled eggs already in the fridge is helpful. You said you were anxious about dairy, that's the one thing I'm REALLY not missing. Good luck and message me for encouragement, you too @jess.how 💕💕 8y
LauraBrook @Cinfhen Thank you so much for the tips!!! And, the whole fact that you're not missing dairy? Mind = blown! 8y
Cinfhen It's the NO sugar that's messing with me. I hear by day 15, you no longer crave it but... that's not my case yet @LauraBrook 😩 8y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen I am sorry for adding to your pain! 😆😣 8y
Cinfhen @DebinHawaii you're excused ONLY because your posts are sooo awesome! I'm waiting on the day when hopefully I can eat at least half of what you post😍 8y
Lmstraubie Got to go through the bad to get to the good sometimes. You got this! 8y
britt_brooke Good luck, you're doing awesome! ?????? We never did Whole 30, but we ate pretty strict paleo for a while and I seriously never felt better. And I lost several lbs very quickly. Now, we try to eat "clean" as much as possible, but aren't as strict. Cutting out sugar is the hardest, most important part! 8y
Cinfhen Thanks so much @britt_brooke ?I'm feeling really good overall but I can tell there is no way I can sustain this long term...I'm learning to look at food choices and figure out what doesn't agree with me. The sugar is super hard, not really missing grains, dairy and legumes. I think you're right, "clean" eating is the way to go!!! 8y
Cinfhen I so appreciate the moral support @Lmstraubie 💖💖💖 8y

Just picked up our March book club selection from my friend ~ I hear this book is laugh out loud funny but overwhelming heartbreaking too! One review described the author of this travelogue as " Michael Moore and Borat in one." And the NY TIMES wrote " Emotionally explosive" Excited to jump in!

LeahBergen This sounds fantastic!! 8y
Cinfhen I'm really looking forward to reading it @LeahBergen I'm guessing it will make for interesting conversation at book club, because some of the girls have very different viewpoints 🙄😬and quite a few are NOT SHY!!! 8y

Catch the Jew! | Tuvia Tenenbom
Pickpick

Sad, devastating book. Tenenbom, native-born Israeli living in Berlin, masquerades as German journalist so he can interview Arabs & European funded NGOs + self-loathing Jews all working to undermine Israel. Surrealistic in tone.Worth reading if you're at all interested in world's only Jewish state.
