Queen Anne: The Politics of Passion
Queen Anne: The Politics of Passion | Anne Somerset
13 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 11 to read
Often derided as weak-willed and insecure, Queen Anne was in fact one of Britains most remarkable monarchs. In many ways a stolid, conventional woman, she nevertheless presided over some of the most momentous events in British history and led a personal life riven by passion, illness and intrigue.

Mehso-so

High so-so / low pick

I learnt a lot about Queen Anne, but it was a bit of a chore to get through (I initially thought it was going to be a Pan).

Sarah Churchill does not come through positively in this bio.

I know Queen Anne is too early for Jane, but I'm currently reading why Anne didn't want Sophia or George (from Hanover) in England during her reign. Saw this tweet and thought Mr Collins visiting the Bennetts before Mr Bennett dies is similar (although the quote in the tweet isn't quite right for this situation).

Decided to look at which letters I needed for #litsyatoz and discovered that I needed Q. Subsequently looked at which books I owned for it, and discovered this gem! It will cover my #18thcentury square on my #jennyis30 bingo card too.

@Cinfhen I don't think you'll want this one - #pagecountphobia!!!

Cinfhen Nope....I‘ll pass but I bet it‘s really good! 4y

🤣🤣🤣

One set of these doesn't match the other books about a #royalty figure! #reallyrandomfebruary @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620

MidnightBookGirl I really love the American version of The Chase, but seeing that quiz book makes me want to track down the original show! 5y

2 non-fiction historical books about royal #babies - one flirtatious King who had too many mistresses and one unlucky Queen whose children didn't survive. #ayupaugust @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain

squirrelbrain Both sound fascinating! 5y
Cinfhen Love those royals!! They make for great reading 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 5y

Chose this book because of the movie The Favourite. Much deeper and more compelling story than I had realized, especially surrounding Anne's many pregnancies and loss of children.

Still working my way through the nominees this week, and I have to say I was disappointed in The Favorite. For another one based in history, and the only one that might have based a Bechdel test, I think they over played the sensational parts (that may or may not even be historically correct) and embellished where the story, for me at least, would have been more compelling played straight like a great Masterpiece Theater timepiece.

#Oscars2019

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Which if history is any indicator, means this one will win big tomorrow night. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
DivineDiana I totally agree with you. Disappointed. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DivineDiana From the previews at theaters, I was expecting it to be funny, but no. I found it more sad and over the top than humorous. 6y

JacqMac That‘s disappointing to hear. I was looking forward to seeing this one. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JacqMac I‘m sorry. And you should still see it, honestly it‘s up for a bunch of Oscars, so my opinion is definitely not in the majority. 6y
Weaponxgirl I found the first half hilarious and then I got bored towards the end. 6y
TheBookDream @Weaponxgirl I think that‘s a theme with that director. The Lobster was hilarious at the front boring and extremely distressing towards the end. I also felt that way about The Favourite 6y
enidkeaner Wow! I actually loved this movie! I pretty much love everything this director‘s done - I think his works are meant to be a bit odd and off putting and this is absolutely the most commercial thing he‘s done. I think most of the people in the theater with me hated it though. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @enidkeaner I‘m glad you loved it! Hopefully @JacqMac will too since she was looking forward to it. 6y
JacqMac I‘m still going to watch it. We shall see. Lol 6y
enidkeaner @JacqMac I would say - just do not go into this expecting it to be really traditionally funny. I thought it was mostly hilarious but it is really odd and off putting but for me, it‘s odd and off putting in a really good way. I tend to watch movies for their directors more than for any other reason, so I got pretty much exactly what I expected 6y
JacqMac @enidkeaner Will do! Thanks for the input. 6y

It‘s not a BAD movie, but for the most part it really wasn‘t for me 😬

Weaponxgirl I found the ending very jarring. Laughed a lot at the beginning and wondered when Nicholas hoult became so funny! 6y
