Dry Bones in the Valley
Dry Bones in the Valley | Tom Bouman
'A tough, edgy thriller ... readers are going to love this. I wish like hell that my name were on the cover.' Wiley Cash, New York Times bestseller and winner of the 2014 Gold Dagger for This Dark Road to Mercy WINNER of the LA Times Book Award - Thriller/Mystery WINNER of the Edgar Best First Novel Longlisted for the CWA John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger When an elderly recluse discovers a corpse on his land, Officer Henry Farrell follows the investigation to strange places in the countryside, and into the depths of his own frayed soul. In Wild Thyme, Pennsylvania, secrets and feuds go back generations. The lone policeman in a small township on the sparse northern border, Henry Farrell expected to spend his mornings hunting and fishing, his evenings playing old-time music. Instead, he has watched the dual encroachment of fracking companies and drug dealers bring money and troubles to the area. As a second body turns up, Henry's search for the killer opens old wounds and dredges up ancient crimes which some people desperately want to keep hidden. With vivid characters and flawless pacing, Tom Bouman immerses readers in this changing landscape. In these derelict woods, full of whitetail deer and history, the hunt is on...

Rural noir! I‘m a boots on city sidewalk type and countrysides make me nervous; too quiet at night. One summer a girlfriend got a little red truck and we spent a lot of time driving around rural upstate NY (spiedies in Binghamton!)and northeast PA. Cool when places I know is mentioned in book. Henry is a burned out soul in the desolate landscape.Body count goes up, meth dealers, and fracking workers sly and creepy old family secrets the worst.

Ericalambbrown Have you read Winter‘s Bone by Daniel Woodrell? It‘s hillbilly noir with a pretty tough little heroine, but it‘s set in Missouri (which is my neck of woods). Your description of this book makes me think you may dig Winter‘s Bone. 6y
Tonton @Ericalambbrown Thank you for the recommendation! I‘ll definitely check it out. It‘s funny, I was browsing Netflix the other day and they had the movie, guessing it is based on the book? Did you see it? 6y
Ericalambbrown @Tonton I did! I liked the movie a lot. There were differences from the book but it stayed true to spirit of the book. Really great low budget indie film. I thought Debra Granik did an excellent job directing it. 6y
Tonton @Ericalambbrown Tonight‘s plan now confirmed, Netflix for the movie and Kindle for the 📚 book. Thank you so much😎 6y
Ericalambbrown @Tonton hope you like it! 6y

This was just okay for me. I really wanted to like it more than I did because I usually enjoy books with a rural setting. I just couldn‘t get drawn into the story. I‘m sure it‘s just me. 😕

myers85 Shame about the book but you're photo is good 😊 7y

The story itself was well constructed, but it was narrated in the first person and that felt a little rocky. Good enough, though, to give the next one in the series a try. If you like mysteries with an environmental element, it might be worth a shot.

Quick and well-paced mystery that takes place in rural Pennsylvania. Good, but I didn't find it to have the zing that others did.

More time spent in state parks today, but I did get enough reading time to finish this one! I really enjoyed it, especially the small town setting and the way the landscape was such an important part of the story.

cathysaid And what an appropriate pic for that book! 👏 8y
bookwrm526 @cathysaid it's from my travels today, at a state park called Landsford Canal. I thought the stone work had the appropriate vibe :) 8y

Not much time for reading today, because we decided that we needed some exercise to counter the holiday excess. Here's a picture of one of the beautiful SC State Parks we stopped at today! More reading planned for tomorrow!!!

A quick (one day) entertaining read about bodies found and mysteries solved. Takes place in rural PA and the author does a good job of matching sparse prose to a somewhat stark landscape. I would certainly try another by this author. #crime #mystery #fiction #debutnovel #booksandbrews

(And the "composition book" is actually my iPad cover.)

RiotMom Yaaay! I can't wait to get to this one for the #litsyAtoZ! 8y

Alrighty then! I like Bouman's prose: sparse yet descriptive, blunt and swift moving. Enjoying it so far!

Beckys_Books Sounds like good advice to me. 8y
bookwrm526 I started this one last night, but I'm having to balance it with two other library books I need to finish! 8y
cathysaid @beckysbooks Quite practical. 8y

Starting this tonight. I've seen several of you Littens discussing Bouman's latest, but I'm a tad OCD so I have to start with the first one. 🤓

Today on @bookriot there's a list of great mysteries and thrillers, including this one, which is one of my absolute favorites. It's about murder, meth dealers, and family secrets, and features a fantastic protagonist. I hope we hear more from him! Here's the rest of the list: bit.ly/28PMqKx

oliviaarmes I loved the list, I'm going to keep this book close to the top of my "to buy list" now (along with the 76,479 others) ? 9y
Booknerd2 Thanks for sharing the link. I can't wait to read ALL of them!!! 9y
