Bridge of Sighs
Bridge of Sighs | Richard Russo
Two boys grow up in Thomaston, upstate New York. One of them gets away to Italy, where he becomes a painter. The other stays to marry Sarah, also an artist; to run a small empire of convenience stores; and to tell their story. He's a good man, but Louis Charles Lynch, known as Lucy, isn't always as reliable as he seems, and even he secretly longs for what he can't have. Now, at sixty years old, he and Sarah are about to travel to Venice, where Lucy's oldest friend and rival has traded life and family for a life far removed from Thomaston. The truth about why he left, and aboutthe ties that bind these three friends, is complex, heartbreaking and utterly compelling.

At first I was dismayed by how long and slow moving this book seemed until suddenly I was so in love with all of the characters. I felt like I knew them deeply and worried about every hurt I saw coming. There is a lot of ground covered from whether your family history decides your fate, escaping or staying in a small town, class, etc. but my love for Lucy and circle will be what lingers making it hard to pick up another book for awhile.

KatieB I‘ve loved others by this author and will add this to the mountainous TBR list! Thanks! 3y

I finished this before bed last night and then saw today‘s prompt is #bridgeovertroubledwater. 🙌🏻🙌🏻

This is the epic story of Lou “Lucy” Lynch growing up in a small NY town and it deals heavily with his relationships with his parents as well as his wife Sarah and childhood friend Bobby. It‘s raw, visceral, and real. Perhaps a bit long, and it drained me. There are a lot of truths that slap you in the face with this one. #marchintothe70s

Cinfhen I love the photo! Is it Venice?? 6y
Cinfhen And it‘s a chunkster! 🤪 (edited) 6y
Reviewsbylola Yes! And I‘ll tell you, it‘s def a chunkster. It had me a bit fooled until I started reading it, at which time I realized that the pages were as thin as tissue paper! @Cinfhen 6y

I have such a difficult time choosing a new book to read that I decided to do things a little differently this time. I literally walked up to my TBR book shelf, closed my eyes, and grabbed. I was admittedly disappointed when I saw what I had chosen, which goes to show I would have probably never read this otherwise.

It‘s over 600 pages but it‘s GREAT. So maybe this will be my new method from now on.

Shamzi I have also done the exact thing a number of times, let the universe decide, lol!! 6y
Kalalalatja I love that this worked for you! I might have to try at some point 🤔 6y
BarbaraBB This is a book I‘ve been avoiding on mt tbr shelves for years. 6y

Reviewsbylola Glad I‘m not alone! I‘ve always wanted to read his books but based on the size and the synopsis I probably would have never picked it up otherwise. 😆 @barbarabb 6y
BarbaraBB I read one by him that I really liked a lot so I don‘t even know why this one scares me so much 🤪 6y
Zelma Just goes to show that it‘s on your shelf for a reason. I should start doing that. If I don‘t want to read the book, maybe I shouldn‘t have it. 🤔 (edited) 6y
Reviewsbylola Exactly, and I am SO BAD at culling my shelves, so this is a good compromise. @Zelma 6y
EmilyM I LOVED this book! 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘m over halfway through and I love the rehashing of Lucy‘s history. The modern day storylines are not as interesting but I think that‘s about to change! @EmilyM 6y

Had to ponder a bit on this one as it‘s between a pick and so-so for me. It could have been improved by losing at least 100 pages and there was a point that I almost bailed. But I kept on and in the end was glad that I finished. Are we doomed to make the same mistakes that our parents have made or does our knowledge of their missteps make them more relatable? The overarching theme of family‘s influence on a person‘s destiny was thought provoking.

Readerann I agree with your assessment of this one. I also had mixed feelings. 6y
BarbaraBB I‘ve had this book for years but seem never in the mood to read it. While I loved some of his other books.. 6y
Ncostell @BarbaraBB I‘ve had this on my shelf for years too, I know what you mean. I preferred Empire Falls to this one. 6y
Ncostell @Readerann Happy I‘m not the only one! I‘m glad to have finished it but it was a slog through some parts. 6y

Mehso-so

At the outset I was in love with this book. But like guests who never go, it wore out its welcome. Not to say that the story didn't draw me in. But gradually it showed wear like a loved garment that sprouts holes. Looking back I realize, too, that women- with the exception of one key character- don't fare well coming off at best controlling, at worst duplicitous. And males spanning the spectrum. Perhaps a worthy effort, but not one of his best.

Here are some books that I own with a #DeckleEdge. They are Bridge of Sighs, The Son, The Widow of the South and Before I Go to Sleep. I picked all of them up for $1 each at my library book sale. Love a good library book sale, not gonna lie! #FeistyFeb
