That Old Cape Magic
That Old Cape Magic | Richard Russo
13 posts | 17 read | 7 to read
For Griffin, all paths, all memories, converge at Cape Cod. The Cape is where he took his childhood summer vacations, where he and his wife, Joy, honeymooned, where they decided hed leave his LA screenwriting job to become a college professor, and where they celebrated the marriage of their daughter Lauras best friend. But when their beloved Lauras wedding takes place a year later, Griffin is caught between chauffeuring his mothers and fathers ashes in two urns and contending with Joy and her large, unruly family. Both he and she have also brought dates along. How in the world could this have happened? By turns hilarious, rueful, and uplifting, That Old Cape Magic is a profoundly involving novel about marriage, family, and all the other ties that bind. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

Typically I am big Russo fan but this one mostly missed the mark for me. There are moments that hit home with his usual devastating accuracy but overall I found the characters paper thin and hard to care about. Glad I read it but I am also glad this wasn‘t the first of his books I have read.

KathyWheeler I have loved a lot of Russo‘s books, but this was not one of them. 2y

Another gem from Russo, who intertwines hilarious physical comedy with deeply emotional poignancy better than anyone. Griffin comes to the realization that we all become our parents, for better or for worse, and how the wounds of childhood mar our adult relationships.

I read this book because I have such fond memories of the Cape. My mom grew up there and we spent some really happy summers there. Well this book was terrible. It wasn‘t even really about the Cape. It was just a whiny white guy complaining about his life. It was awful. I wish I hadn‘t bothered to finish it.

CoverToCoverGirl @ReadingSusan No, not at all! Books are supposed to make us feel... a bad book is a bad book, I‘ll be steering away from this one... rapidly! 😂 7y

Pickpick

I expected this to be a sappy love story, which it wasn't. It was about a man who finds himself after the passing of his parents. Russo did a great job explaining the characters feelings and thoughts...so much so that I almost felt like I could understand my spouse's point of view a little better.
