Obsidian Butterfly
Obsidian Butterfly | Laurell K. Hamilton
'I was covered in blood, but it wasn't mine, so it was okay.' Edward is a hit man. He specialises in monsters. Vampires, shape-shifters, anything and everything. There are people like me, Anita Blake, who do it legally, but Edward doesn't sweat the legalities or, hell, the ethics. He is an equal opportunity killer. I may be one of the few friends that Edward has, but it's like being friends with a tame leopard. It may curl on the foot of your bed and let you pet its head, but it can still eat your throat out...

April 2021 - rereading my favorite one because what does it say about me that I enjoy Olaf and Edward is great - although years later there are some triggers

BacklistReader @jinxmoon I have heard it‘s a series that started out strong and then after something happened in the later books it started to go down hill. 4y
jinxmoon That‘s how I feel... But the books still get many good reviews. Maybe you‘ll like them 🙂 4y
BacklistReader @jinxmoon fingers crossed I do 4y

I really enjoyed this Anita Blake installment - lots of blood and gun fights as always but I really appreciated there was a change to the pace, the language and syntax has really improved compared to the first book in the series. The setting in New Mexico was refreshing and the references to Aztec culture gave a new freshness to the overall story.

#ChillingPhotoChallenge. Yes, I‘m behind again...🤷‍♀️

Oct 19th: Gory
Status: I own this one in hardcover, and sadly it was the first book I thought of for the prompt gory...which is pretty telling since according to GR I read it back in 2010! That probably should have been my hint to abandon the series then, sadly I think I read another 15 books before finally calling it quits. 🤦‍♀️

wanderinglynn Same here. I made it through book 20 before finally calling it quits. For me, too much gore and too much explicit sex overshadowed the plots & any character development. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wanderinglynn I know, and yet I kept reading thinking she had to eventually trim down her harem of guys and the plots would come forefront again....yet somehow she kept picking up a new guy or two each book and not dealing with the issues she had with the current ones. 🙄. I gave up at book 24! 5y
BeansPage 🧟‍♀️ 5y
WildQuibble It‘s such a shame that she didn‘t write any more after this one... (she didn‘t she didn‘t she didn‘t la la la I can‘t hear you 😉😉😉) 5y

I swear, I haven't dropped off the radar again. I just spent a good chunk of my week sick. Got bad enough I even took a whole day off work, which I rarely ever do. Pretty much recovered now. On the bright side, I got some reading done.

Karkar Glad you are feeling better! Everyone at my work is sick 😷 5y

I haven‘t been reading much lately so to get back into the swing of things I picked up one of my old favorites. Badass female lead, assassins, zombies, and crime drama. What more could you want? It has a fun fast paced story and focuses mainly on your friendly neighborhood Assassin Edward. There are a few cringe worthy moments in the book that I didn‘t recall so trigger warning, but it is considered horror. A solid 8/10.

“Edward wonders why I am so sympathetic to the monsters. The answer is simple. Because I am one.” I really liked seeing Anita off working on her own with Edward & no Jean Claude or Richard in sight. But there was one child abuse scene that could have been left out.

AWahle This book was the beginning of the end of me reading her books because of the scene you mention. I understand the reason for it, but.... 6y
Christy2318 @awahle Yeah. I went into the series knowing I might not stick out all the way since people said it goes off the rails after the early books. I‘m continuing at this point but more of these types of scenes could cause me to bail. 6y

Four books with bugs in the title... all of which I enjoyed (to varying degrees). 😃

I-read-and-eat I am super curious about the Beekeeper's apprentice. Did you enjoy it? 7y
sprainedbrain @I-read-and-eat Yes, I liked it. I haven't felt the need to continue the series, but it was a fun story. I think I have it 3.5/5 stars. 7y
DrJAdMerricksson @I-read-and-eat ooh, I love that book! Love the series too. I'm about half through the whole series. It just keeps getting better. 7y
I-read-and-eat @sprainedbrain @DrJAdMerricksson I will definately read it then! But I'll get it from the library to see if I like it. 7y
Chelsey I find that I read Beekeeper at the exact right moment in my life and have aged almost exactly in step with the protagonist, so I adore the whole series. There are a couple of titles that I felt weren't as well wrought than the others, but overall probably my favorite series. @I-read-and-eat 7y

I have always enjoyed this book. It's quite a different take from the others. First off, we're in New Mexico. It's nice seeing Anita in a non midwestern state. But secondly, the novel has a big focus on Edward which is awesome. He's such a great character, I love the focus on him in this book.

The sad part is, there isn't an Anita Blake audiobook for the next 7 books. I'm already dying a little without having Kimberly Alexis to listen to.

AmandaL I really liked this one too. I haven't read this series in a while. 7y
