While I enjoyed the first few chapters about his early life and experiences after slavery, the rest of the book-about establishing the Tuskegee Institute-was rather dry and unemotional. Low pick.

so-soI didn‘t expect to struggle with this autobiography as much as I did. Washington was an admirable man of great accomplishment. I liked hearing about his early years and his experience after slavery, but the latter part seemed like a thank you to a lot of rich white men that helped him, mixed in with self-congratulations. I can appreciate a positive outlook, but some of the almost excusing of slavery/slaveholders seemed kind of icky.😬

I finished reading Up from Slavery this morning. Reading from this text gave me a new perspective on Washington‘s life compared to conversations others have spoke about his life. I admire Washington‘s perseverance at that time and his steadfastness to get his goals accomplished.

Day 4: Independence.... the Door of no return in Ghana. Thousands of slaves left this slave port never to return. This is reminder that in 1776 freedom, liberty and independence was not available to everyone. My Gullah ancestors included. #independence #gullah #readingresolutions
pickThis is a good read for those that don‘t know the story of Booker T. Washington. It‘s amazing that a man can come from being a slave to the foremost educator for blacks in the United States. I wish our nation would put the issues of races to rest and realize all people are truly equal. Mr Washington shows us how much can be, and still needs accomplished.
My audiobook this month, for Black History. Unending fortitude to get an education. Several “Booker T” schools in my area and my son‘s friend recently got a full ride at what is now Hampton U. Mr Washington is to the point and gives some insight on the race relations after the Civil War and how the ex- slaves coped with their new found freedom. An easy read and even though written in 1901, sets you right there with him.
If you haven‘t read this, I highly recommend it. It easy reading and gives such insight to how difficult his rise up was. What a man he was ! #blackhistorymonth

I‘m sure I‘m not going to finish another book before the end of the night unless I finish ‘Black Panther‘ but I don‘t know if I will.
This was not a good reading month.
so-soA well written memoir. The narration didn't sound natural for some reason, but it was done well. What I found most interesting was when Washington talked about the creation of The Tuskegee Institute. I know the importance of the institution, but didn't realize what went into its creation. I found some of what Washington wrote/said was far too hopeful and even a bit naive. I don't know if he wrote that way for a reason, or if that was truth for him
