Separation Anxiety
Separation Anxiety: A Novel | Laura Zigman
21 posts | 22 read | 26 to read
"Separation Anxiety is a hilarious, heart-breaking and thought-provoking portrait of a difficult marriage, as fierce as it is funny.... My advice: Start reading and don't stop until you get to the last page of this wise and wonderful novel." --Alice Hoffman From bestselling author Laura Zigman, a hilarious novel about a wife and mother whose life is unraveling and the well-intentioned but increasingly disastrous steps she takes to course-correct her relationships, her career, and her belief in herself Judy never intended to start wearing the dog. But when she stumbled across her son Teddy's old baby sling during a halfhearted basement cleaning, something in her snapped. So: the dog went into the sling, Judy felt connected to another living being, and she's repeated the process every day since. Life hasn't gone according to Judy's plan. Her career as a children's book author offered a glimpse of success before taking an embarrassing nose dive. Teddy, now a teenager, treats her with some combination of mortification and indifference. Her best friend is dying. And her husband, Gary, has become a pot-addled professional "snackologist" who she can't afford to divorce. On top of it all, she has a painfully ironic job writing articles for a self-help website--a poor fit for someone seemingly incapable of helping herself. Wickedly funny and surprisingly tender, Separation Anxiety offers a frank portrait of middle-aged limbo, examining the ebb and flow of life's most important relationships. Tapping into the insecurities and anxieties that most of us keep under wraps, and with a voice that is at once gleefully irreverent and genuinely touching, Laura Zigman has crafted a new classic for anyone taking fumbling steps toward happiness.

My second Zigman was more on the hilarious 🧠🍭 side but I enjoyed it just as much. She‘s an author I‘ll watch and read more of for sure!

Judy is overwhelmed. She‘s living with the husband she‘s technically separated from and hiding that from her teen son who just seems to be growing up so fast. So when she finds an old baby sling, she puts her dog in it and just can‘t seem to let go of wearing her. What could possibly go wrong?? 😉

Cinfhen Ha! This sounds hilarious 😂 must look for this new to me author 🤗 1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I think you‘d like her!! 😁😁 1y

Megabooks @squirrelbrain it was! But I don‘t think ma molly would like to be worn, so I tried not to get any ideas! 🤣😉 1y
squirrelbrain Lol! Can you imagine me trying to wear Henry! 🤣 1y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain that would be one big baby sling to fit him, and you‘d develop some serious muscles (or more likely a serious backache)! 🤣 1y

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards

“He vibrates with the hypervigilance of the superanxious--his eyes are always scanning a room, assessing his fight-or-flight options, while I'm completely contained, almost reptilian in my stillness. Which is my own version of hypervigilance: I'm always waiting for Gary to panic, to make a scene, so I try to take up less space and air than he does. It's like I've been holding my breath since we met, unable to fully inhale or exhale;

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards ... as if there isn't enough room in the world for both of us.“

This hit me as my husband and I frequently have our anxiety spirals set the other one off.

I really liked this book. I found the MC to be VERY relatable in that quirky, but one-step-too-far (i.e. WEARING the dog) kind of way that makes her humorous. I think it takes a skillful writer to bring just the right amount of that quirkiness to major life stresses to make it funny and not just bizarre. One‘s life experiences probably play a big role in whether you find the MC sadly humorous or whiny. Narrated by Courtney Patterson.

For such a short book, it‘s taking me way too long to get through it. It‘s not the book‘s fault - I am enjoying it but life keeps getting in the way of my reading! 🤦🏻‍♀️
If I do nothing else today, I will finish it!

I listened to this one and teetered between thinking Judy and Gary were a hot mess and LOLing. Considering everything that was happening it was understandable why Judy turned to her dog. Though wearing the dog...lol. She and Gary were meant for each other.

A charming read that had me both laughing along at the funny moments and tearing up through the sad ones. I adore my Corgi and fully related to the main character carrying her dog in a sling to comfort her from her failing marriage, thoughts of how her best friend is dying and all the other trials and tribulations of her life. It's the kind of book you can read over and over, like a cosy snuggle with your furbaby, you never want it to end. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Not every book is for every person. I stuck with this because a couple of my bookish friends really liked it. Instead of “wickedly funny and surprisingly tender,“ I found it slow and tedious. Most of the characters are unpleasant.

This is my fourth Zigman book. The rest were read before I joined Goodreads (or kept track of my ratings in my personal notes), so I don't remember how I felt about them.

This book addresses some very heavy topics, but in a way that manages to feel quirky and upbeat. The plot felt unrealistic at times, but I really enjoyed being along for the ride! The narrator was excellent and I think that added to my enjoyment. #bookspinbingo

Well. I am giving this a so-so as it is not a “bad” book...but it just annoyed me to no end. I found Judy to be whiny and entitled with abhorrent behavior. The ending was...I don‘t know...unbelievable I guess. I continued to give it a chance as one of the descriptions of the book was “hysterical.” I found not a single thing funny about this story. It was overwhelmingly sad—and I don‘t think that was intentional.

JoyBlue I've continued to read for the same reason you did. Every step of the way, I think about bailing . . . but I've come this far. . . . 🙄 3y

This was a quirk-filled book and I enjoyed it. 3.5 stars. A short and quick read. A relatable and likable main character. Deals with issues like coping with the illness of a loved one, career struggles, marriage troubles, and mental illness. Funny at times and serious at others, it gives the reader a lot to think about.

Thousand-Lives Starting this on audio today! 4y

Getting some reading in before bed! I‘m drawn to this quirky story. Managed to pick this up from the library before it closed bc of Covid.

mcipher Oh, man, how much do you miss the library?!?!! I can‘t wait for the library!!! 4y
MyNamesParadise @mcipher I know; it‘s been over a month! I actually had a lot of books on cd come in before they closed. I listen to those in my car because I have a pretty long commute, but now that there‘s no where to drive to, I‘m not getting my listening in! I‘ve been checking out older books I had at home to keep me occupied! 4y

This is the tale of life in all its messy glory, the good, the bad and the downright hideous. It‘s told with lots of humour but also with sadness and a little hope. You‘ll love Judy and all her foibles, you‘ll laugh with her and cry with her too. A thoroughly entertaining and heartwarming read.

This book is fused with humor, grief, and loss. The inside flap says “A hilarious novel...” The written Laura Zigman is definitely funny and articulate. What comes through is the compassion of a woman going through many difficult relationships in her life.

This is first book I read by Laura Zigman, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. When I saw this cover, I did think this would be more humorous, but this was definitely a much more serious novel then expected.
