Too Much
Too Much: How Victorian Constraints Still Bind Women Today | Rachel Vorona Cote
22 posts | 13 read | 33 to read
Lacing cultural criticism, Victorian literature, and storytelling together, TOO MUCH explores how culture corsets women's bodies, souls, and sexualities--and how we might finally undo the strings. A weeping woman is a monster. So too is a fat woman, a horny woman, a woman shrieking with laughter. Women who are one or more of these things have heard, or perhaps simply intuited, that we are repugnantly excessive, that we have taken illicit liberties to feel or fuck or eat with abandon. After bellowing like a barn animal in orgasm, hoovering a plate of mashed potatoes, or spraying out spit in the heat of expostulation, we've flinched-ugh, that was so gross. I am so gross. On rare occasions, we might revel in our excess-belting out anthems with our friends over karaoke, perhaps-but in the company of less sympathetic souls, our uncertainty always returns. A woman who is Too Much is a woman who reacts to the world with ardent intensity is a woman familiar to lashes of shame and disapproval, from within as well as without. Written in the tradition of Shrill, Dead Girls, Sex Object and other frank books about the female gaze, TOO MUCH encourages women to reconsider the beauty of their excesses-emotional, physical, and spiritual. Rachel Vorona Cote braids cultural criticism, theory, and storytelling together in her exploration of how culture grinds away our bodies, souls, and sexualities, forcing us into smaller lives than we desire. An erstwhile Victorian scholar, she sees many parallels between that era's fixation on women's "hysterical" behavior and our modern policing of the same; in the space of her writing, you're as likely to encounter Jane Eyre and Lizzy Bennet as you are Britney Spears and Tori Amos. This book will tell the story of how women, from then and now, have learned to draw power from their reservoirs of feeling, all that makes us "Too Much."

Trying to clear off the piles on my table. I keep finding these scraps of paper with lists of books I want to read. Managed to get to quite a few of them over the months but there is just not enough time to read them all! And yes, my piles accumulate over months. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

AmyG Ha! I used to do that with post-it notes but then started using a little notebook. Much neater! I just cross off what I‘ve read. (edited) 3y
Suet624 @AmyG Believe it or not I have one of those too. Then it became overwhelming. I think I have to start being more selective. I think my TBR on Litsy is over 2K (which has to be a mistake, but there it is). 3y
AmyG I see Hamnet. Have you read it yet? 3y

Suet624 @AmyG No. a friend gave it to me for Christmas and it‘s sitting on my shelf. 3y
MaureenMc A bit off topic, but I‘m reading Dorothy Day‘s autobiography. Very engaging so far! 😊 3y
Graywacke Love those. I hope you keep them somewhere. 3y
Suet624 @MaureenMc I love reading anything I can find about Dorothy. She‘s a bit hard on herself in that book. That‘s why I like reading books about her because they recognize and report on how much she accomplished. Enjoy!! 3y
AmyG It‘s very good. I would have sent you my copy if you didn‘t have it. 3y
Suet624 @AmyG thanks for thinking of me. 💕 3y
Suet624 @Graywacke already tucked away in a drawer, to be potentially dug up again a year from now. 🤣 3y
Graywacke @Suet624 that works! 🙂 3y
Reggie Somewhere in a box of my stuff from my last apartment that I never put away, is a torn out a page from a People magazine that had Stephen King‘s Top 5 summer reads from like 2005. This is very that vibe. 😁 3y
Suet624 @Reggie hahaha. Definitely same vibe. 3y
kspenmoll My uncle & aunt met working with Dorothy Day in NYC.😀 3y

Hooked_on_books Congrats! (When I met mine, my husband asked what I would be doing for the rest of the year instead of reading. He was joking of course but what?!?) 4y
Pageturner1 what was your thought on Too Much? 4y
rachelm @Pageturner1 I liked it! But I had read a lot of the books she was referencing, so it was relatable. When I hadn‘t it was harder to get into 4y

#AwesomeAugust Readathon update: I managed to read and finish Midnight before the 15th so it doesn‘t count. I finished 4 books two which were in progress before the 15th and two which were unplanned. I am not quite 1/2 way through the audio of Pull of the Stars and it‘s so good. And I am enjoying #4 in the Gethsemane Brown mystery series. I have not made much progress on Too Much but will have my nose in it the rest of the evening.

Deblovestoread Thanks @Andrew65 for hosting this set your own goals monthly readathon! 4y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

Wow, do I have a lot of feelings about this wonderful book. I have a lot of shame around feeling like “too much”—too loud, too flirty, all over the place, a know it all, and on and on. RVC blends memoir and literary and cultural criticism in a frank and engaging way. The intro will hook you, I promise. And yes, I stole the poster from our bookstore‘s event 😊

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, the exploration of Victorian societal expectations, as expressed in the literature of the day, and the continuation of such ideals to now is interesting and engaging. However, the author gives over too much of this book to memoir, not all of which is illustrative of her thesis, and it feels a bit self-indulgent. I would have liked this more with more editing.

BronwynMahon I just finished this last night and feel the same! I was hoping for a more academic/feminist slant instead of such a personal one. But I enjoyed it once I readjusted my expectations. 4y
Hooked_on_books @BronwynMahon All the components are good and she writes well, but I‘m noticing this as a trend in nonfiction. Sometimes it works for me, sometimes it doesn‘t. I just don‘t think she balanced it quite right, but I do think she could write a good memoir. 4y

I know Rachel from UMD, so not only did I read this book in her actual voice, it felt like a conversation we could have hanging out in the grad lounge. Rachel deftly transitions between personal narrative, pop culture, and Victorian literature to trace the ways women's lives are circumscribed by societal expectations, using the metaphor of "too muchness" to describe those of us (i.e. everyone) who doesn't fit those parameters.

? I love that Rachel felt the need to qualify her discussion of women in vampire novels with this statement!
