Tall Man
Tall Man: The Death of Doomadgee | Chloe Hooper
In 2004 on Palm Island, an Aboriginal settlement in the "Deep North" of Australia, a thirty-six-year-old man named Cameron Doomadgee was arrested for swearing at a white police officer. Forty minutes later he was dead in the jailhouse. The police claimed he'd tripped on a step, but his liver was ruptured. The main suspect was Senior Sergeant Christopher Hurley, a charismatic cop with long experience in Aboriginal communities and decorations for his work. Chloe Hooper was asked to write about the case by the pro bono lawyer who represented Cameron Doomadgee's family. He told her it would take a couple of weeks. She spent three years following Hurley's trail to some of the wildest and most remote parts of Australia, exploring Aboriginal myths and history and the roots of brutal chaos in the Palm Island community. Her stunning account goes to the heart of a struggle for power, revenge, and justice. Told in luminous detail, Tall Man is as urgent as Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee and The Executioner's Song. It is the story of two worlds clashing -- and a haunting moral puzzle that no reader will forget.

Got a bit sick yesterday and missed ballet! Today I was still a bit off so took the day off again. I tested myself out with a small walk to the second furthest away book swap from my house (in the back ground of this picture) and did ok so hopefully I can go back to ballet tomorrow.

Jeg The Tall Man is very good , especially for right now in Australia with the yes/ no referendum. 14mo

A powerful read. Published in 2008 it documents the happenings and trial around the death in custody of Cameron Doomadgee on Palm Island. With the up and coming referendum here in Australia , I would recommend this as an important read. If you can find a copy. Here it seems to have disappeared from library shelves. Chloe‘s writing does remind me of the style of some of Helen Garners books.

Not many books change your thoughts on our Society. So ashamed this is still happening in the 2000s.

Cameron Doomadgee, an Aboriginal man, was taken into custody for virtually no reason, then shortly after died of devastating injuries. This book both follows the events and eventual trial but also portrays the community with such grace. This book made me sad and angry. It‘s terrific. Thank you, Cindy, for sending this my way.

LeeRHarry Glad you found it a good read - I hesitate to say enjoy - I believe it‘s important to show a side of Australian society that a lot of even Australians don‘t know. Definitely made me boiling mad at times. 3y

Hey, hey, look what I got! The fabulous @Cinfhen sent me the tagged book in the cutest cactus mailer and it has arrived. Thank you so much, Cindy! And when I was out and about today, I was in the mood to increase my unread books (the number is so high, what‘s one more?), so I snagged The Lost Village, which came on my radar recently. I can‘t wait to get to both of these!

Cinfhen Im so glad it arrived, Holly!! Sorry it lacked any extras...next time I‘ll jazz it up 😘can‘t wait to hear your thoughts 4y
Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen I‘m thrilled to have it, with or without extras! I‘ll be sure to tag you in my review when I read it. 4y
LeeRHarry Could you tag me too please? I‘d be interested to hear your thoughts 😊 4y

While I found the case of Cameron Doomadgee heartbreaking and infuriating, I can‘t say I was surprised by any of it. It‘s unfortunately another legal, racial and all too often gross miscarriage of justice perpetuated by those in power/ authority. I wish I read this when I was feeling more mindful because my #VacationBrain was often distracted.

Cinfhen @Hooked_on_books do you still have my email?? Please send me your address and I‘ll happily forward this book to you. Thanks for the recommendation @LeeRHarry 4y
LeeRHarry You‘re welcome 😊 - as you said heartbreaking but unfortunately all to common place. 4y

This book deserves every award it‘s won and more. Brilliant read. The events that took place after this book was written are very interesting. I‘d love to know if Chloe Hooper has ever returned to Palm island to visit the people she wrote about. The senior sergeant at the centre of the book unsurprisingly did not stay away from controversy.

Just starting this one. It has been on my ‘To Read‘ list for a long time. It is Chloe Hooper‘s account of the death in custody of Cameron Doomadgee and the events that followed. Hooper‘s writing is exceptional so I know I am going to be totally hooked on this one.

Joanne1 I was just seconds ago looking at this book on my shelf and thinking I really need to read that one. 5y
Eva_B @Joanne1 Wow! What a coincidence! I‘m only 20 pages in but it‘s really good so far. 5y
Joanne1 @Eva2 I‘m sure it will be great. I loved The Arsonist. Think I‘ll add it to my May to-read pile. You‘ve inspired me. 5y
Eva_B @Joanne1 I really loved The Arsonist too. I still think about the content of that book. So well researched and written. 5y
Joanne1 @Eva2 yes, her research is extremely impressive. 5y

The tension this causes me, I was not born in Australia, am I not mistaking this land for my own?
What do I do now?

??: "In one house a man who couldn't speak or hear...had his door kicked down and was made to lie on the floor with dogs and guns pointed at him. Children and pregnant women had red lasers of rifles playing over their faces." ? WHAT? Palm Island police raids in 2004. In Australia? Not a war zone, not devastated by famine or poverty, we came to this, we have come to this, our collective history comes to this. How shall we move forward for good?

LeeRHarry This book was so powerful, frightening and ultimately devastating 😔 it is still with me years later. 7y

No words. A must-read.

MariettaSG Did you read it? 7y
Fernoppy @MariettaSG certainly did. It's heartbreaking and outrageous. A series of historical and contemporary wrongs compounded by our general lack of knowledge about these issues. We must be able to do better. 7y
