Little underwhelmed. This was another one where at the beginning, I really thought I‘d love it. The author‘s descriptive writing easily creeped me out. The unique lore that was brought into it had me intrigued. But by the 3/4 point, it felt like a lot of that was abandoned. I still don‘t understand the real motive of almost anything any of the antagonists did. The leshii seemed to just be a spooky plot device. Much of the horror came from ⬇️

pickI felt like I was floating through Where the Crawdads Sing but with Victor LaValle as my swamp guide. Creepy, yet beautiful, I loved the tension, action, & thoughtful characterization in Davidson‘s writing. A deftly woven tale of horror, myth, murder, and gritty Americana, TBD is a book I‘d highly recommend for late night reading on a bayou. Was that a catamount or a woman screaming? Think I‘ll lock the doors and turn out the lights! 4/5⭐️

pickWhen the reviews mentioned Daniel Woodrell + supernatural I was intrigued! I love a good Southern Gothic tale but the supernatural can sometimes go either way. This book did the supernatural well! No vampires or werewolves here, but some higher power (be it dark or light) was at work.
After reading a lot more cozy mystery type of books this felt like I was held at arm‘s length but it was beautifully written.

pickIn between a pick and a so-so. Have you ever read something that had densely vivid, descriptive prose? TBD is that way, but with every single line being so potently descriptive the reading felt so heavy and exhausting while losing focus on any intended meaning in the thousands and thousands of extra words. Maybe I wasn‘t in the right headspace for something like that. 🤷♀️
so-soIt‘s gothic, it‘s bloody, and it‘s got a surprisingly literary bite, making The Boatman‘s Daughter a satisfying read for horror fans and more, if not a bit difficult to comprehend at times.
pickThe writing here was just beautiful, really put in mind the setting and people. Definately some very creepy parts! The magic was interesting and now I have to research some things mentioned in here I've never heard of. Looking forward to seeing more from this author!

pickOne of my favorites so far this year! Set on the Arkansas riverbanks and bayou, a harrowing and brutal story of a young girl named Miranda who is orphaned the night her father mysteriously disappears deep in the bayou. She survives, making her living running drugs up river for a degenerate ex-preacher and crooked small town constable. She does this along with running her lost father's Mercantile in effort to not only support herself ⬇️
so-soI'm sure there's a simple psychology to it but I'm not that into horror unless in stressed out. So with covid came this book. It was alright. I mostly hoped that after 400 pages, the characters felt deeper and more filled out.
pickA mix of True Detective & swamp magik by way of Slavic folklore, atmospheric and tense and so damn beautiful despite the brutality of it all. A mad preacher. A swamp witch. A one eyed lawman. A tough as nails female protagonist hellbent on protecting a found family of outcasts she cares about more than herself. And all the while bayou spirits beyond the sway of human influence dwell in the darkest reaches of the cypress groves. So damn good!!
