Wrapping up the last of my #Pop23 reviews. This book brings back wonderful childhood memories. The memories are foggy but I loved the one-on-one attention my neighbor gave me after my triplet siblings were born. I believe she had a big part of my love for reading and I loved reading this one with her. It‘s always a comfort read for me. ~a book you wish you could read for the first time again.

These poems are very entertaining and relatively easy to follow. This would be great as an introduction to poetry, or even after you have learned about and worked with poetry. The illustrations help to show what the author was writing about

Using a whole poem as a quote. I think the figurative language that he uses is so adorable and thinking about saving a dream for when you‘re older and grumpy is such a silly thought. I love it.

I love the differences between the poems and how they can go from something so simple and sweet to something deep in mind tickling. Along with his funky, yet Groovy doodles, I love them.

Another classic poetry, book with poems and drawings by Shel Silverstein. These plums can be kind of out there, but if he really look into the meaning of them, it‘s some thing always deeper or something just funny. I love this poet!

It‘s an imaginative and funny book of poems but was banned in a Florida school in 1993 and challenged in other US schools throughout the 1980s and 90s because the poems were seen as promoting disobedience, violence, cannibalism, etc.

#BookSpinBingo double bingo!

So apparently I was pretty tired last evening, because in addition to making myself a nice steaming cup of hot water (no teabag) I also colored in the wrong space on my bingo grid (it was supposed to be top right, not second from top right). Once I realized what I‘d done two things were clear: it was time for bed and this had to be my next read. Which it was. 🤦🏻‍♀️

AllisonM89 I've also made myself tea without the tea part 😂 4y

I remember enjoying Silverstein a lot more as a kid, but I am just not terribly impressed reading this now. Same with Falling Up. I hope Where the Sidewalk Ends goes better when I get to that one. I just don‘t know how much the kiddo will enjoy most of these.

A Light in the Attic is a zany, illustrated P collection by Shel Silverstein. The poems in it are all very unique. With drawings as silly as the poems themselves, this book is very entertaining. However, some language is advanced and some simply made up. Students may need extra support while reading, so I recommend a PR strategy for both ELs and students of lower reading levels. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/light-attic
#ucflae3414su20

nquintus A Light in the Attic is all about the author‘s use of words. It would be an excellent addition to a vocabulary unit when used with a PR strategy to assist students with comprehension. (Some of the resources linked above support the use of this book while teaching vocab.) While teaching this book, it is important that the teacher follow ESOL strategy 6: continually monitor student comprehension and UDL guideline 2.1: clarify vocabulary and symbols. 4y
Ameyer32 Such a talented author! His whimsical silliness is admirable. I have not read this one but will definitely look into it. I love your ESOL strategy. It is important to make sure that the students are comprehending the material and supply support if necessary. 4y
DrSpalding His poetry is zany and unique. Students tend to enjoy these poems. Keep poetry anthologies like this readily available. When you have a minute ask students to pick a number and whatever number is chosen you select that poem. It‘s fun and surprising… Students enjoy this and it is an easy way to keep poetry present in your classroom. 4y

This P book contains oil tools little poems with cute illustrations by Silvers himself. This would be a good book for IR, it‘s not too hard to comprehend but after you can discuss the meanings as a class. Before you read, you can complete this word search about the poem so they have an idea of the words they will see. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/material/light-attic-word-search The EL I chose is #20 lost the important words you plan to

juliap99 use, hence the word search that you can do together. The UDL I chose to go with this lesson is 9.1 to promote expectations and beliefs the optimize motivation. By completing the word search before you increase interest in the poems ! #ucflae3414sp20 4y
HappyMaddy Silverstein! He really got my interested in poetry with humor. This is a great option for students to be introduced to poetry that is light-hearted & funny. I would consider reading a poem a day to my class! The word search is a very creative way to get kids i‘m excited about vocabulary. 4y
DrSpalding You can‘t do much better than Silverstein! Your universal design principle and English learner strategies work nicely. You do need to increase interest in poetry and teach poetic elements along with figurative language. 4y

I remember my mom reading this to me when I was younger along with “Where the Sidewalk Ends”, so a walk down memory lane ! But this P book is perfect for a RA or PR. Reading with a partner and decoding the meanings behind them would be great practice. rif.org has pretty cool resources for students creating their own poems. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Tabitha_H The UDL I would use to support this text would be ( 1.3 ) offer alternatives for visual information. I would use this because poems can be hard to decode. The ESOL strategy would be #37, Use language experience techniques in discussing concepts and ideas. 4y
DrSpalding I love the connection to your mom noted here. Partner reading would work well as does choral reading and echo reading! Be sure to spend time reading poetry to and with your future students. 4y

Review: A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein, 2002, is a poetry book full of more whacky, abstract poems about anything and everything.
Blurb: I would use this in my classroom during a poetry unit and have children pick one of the topics inside and write their own poems about it. As well as illustrations since the book has drawings too!

“A Light in the Attic“ by Shel Silverstein, 2009. I'm a big fan of Shel Silverstein poems. His poems have a very natural flow to them, and they have somewhat of a spooky tone to them. They also rhyme, which kids will be a big fan of.

A Light in the Attic is a P novel written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein. I think this book would best be used as a PR in a classroom grades 3-5. This is good for partner reading because the book is a collection of many different poems of different types. Students can read the poems together in partners and work together to determine the meaning of them. This book won the 1984 William Allen White Children's Book Award. #UCFLAE3414F19

katiehamlin I loved this book when I was growing up! I would sit down and read the poems for hours on end, so I feel like students should be introduced to them as well.
The EL strategy I would use with this book is 2, promote cooperation (small groups). I think this one is perfect for this book because if I incorporate this book into my curriculum, I will probably use it as a PR, which is in small groups.
4y
katiehamlin The UDL principle I would use for this book is 1.3, offer alternatives for visual information. Shel Silverstein can be difficult for some students to read, so I think having an audio recording on top of having a physical copy of the book would be very helpful for many students. 4y
katiehamlin Here is a link to a website I would use with this book. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/light-attic This website has a lot of cute activities such as a word search that I think students would enjoy doing in the classroom. It also includes a teaching guide that could be very useful.
