I think this book is a great book to have in your classroom library because it creates the discussions about race and the importance of being your own individual and celebrating your differences.

this book shares the story of Jordan Banks, who is in seventh grade. One of his biggest dreams is becoming an artist. When Jordan‘s family moves,he attends a private school and faces a big obstacle of being one of the few students of color and his class.

Seventh grader, Jordan wants to go to an art school, but with the help of financial aid his parents are able to send him to a private academy known for academics, but not diversity. A sweet story about fitting in, finding friends and standing up for yourself. A 4 of 5 ⭐️ pick for this story with great illustrations and lots of heart.

This graphic novel follows a middle schooler named Jordan Banks who joins a new school, but he is the one of the only students of color attending the school. He finds himself trapped between worlds, and doesn't feel he fits in either.
The illustrations are vivid and display the feelings/perspectives of the characters.
Favorite quote, “When I was younger I used to wish I was Superman. So, instead of falling, I could fly.“

This is a great book for upper elementary or middle school students that they can relate to.

I wouldn‘t use this book in my classroom and I don‘t think I would have it for fun

“New Kid“ is a graphic novel that tells the story of a young middle schooler named Jordan, who is forced by his parents to attend a new private school. This story is a great read for middle school aged students because of how they may be able to relate to and understand some of the struggles Jordan is facing.

The 1st graphic novel to win the Newbery, this story of a city kid starting at a fancy new school, is great. Tackling topics of bullying, feeling like not fitting in, struggles in making new friends, while handling being ‘different‘ in subtle ways, this middle grade is handling tough situations with sensitivity.
