Scents and Sensibility
Scents and Sensibility: A Chet and Bernie Mystery | Spencer Quinn
12 posts | 10 read | 1 to read
When a mysterious case of illegal cactus smuggling comes to their attention, Chet and his human P.I. companion, Bernie Little, find themselves in a prickly situation in this eighth book in the New York Times bestselling mystery series that makes even cat lovershowl with delight (USA TODAY). In the latest entry in the immensely popular Chet and Bernie mystery series, Private Investigator Bernie Little and his canine companion Chet return home to encounter some alarming developments. First off, Bernies wall safenormally hidden behind the waterfall picture in the officeis gone, and with it Bernies grandfathers watch, their most valuable possession. And next door, old Mr. Parsons is under investigation for being in possession of a saguaro cactus illegally transplanted from the desert. Bernie and Chet go deep into the desert to investigate. Is it possible that such a lovely old couple have a terrible secret in their past? Chet and Bernie discover bad things going on in the wilderness, far worse that cactus smuggling, and all connected to a strange but innocent-seeming desert festival called Cactus Man. They unearth leads that take them back to a long-ago kidnapping that may not have been a kidnapping and threaten a ruthless and charismatic criminal with a cult following, a criminal who sees at once what Chet and Bernie mean to each other and knows how to exploit it. Every bit as insightful (Booklist), humorous (Library Journal), and deliciously addictive (Publishers Weekly, starred review) as Quinns previous books, Scents and Sensibility is a drool-worthy mystery that will have readers everywhere begging for more.

46% through. I need to make myself finish this. This series was fun in the beginning but I've gotten a little bored with it.

Having a very sensitive nose means, I cannot appreciate all the scents out there. Sometimes even pleasant scents can be too much.

I'm still grateful for the scents that make up my life, the scents that mean home, relaxation, forest, memories, even if it means I know exactly which kid or cat just farted.

Slajaunie 😂😂 a sensitive nose can be a curse! I will get nauseous sometimes from smells because of it. Your scents look beautiful! 5y
julesG @Slajaunie Thank you. All very 'green' scents and then only a tiny spritz or I'll have a headache all day. 5y

Beckys_Books I'm also sensitive to smell, NEVER wear perfume and everything I use like soap and detergent is unscented. 5y
julesG @Beckys_Books It can be so annoying. Trying to find unscented things is hard, those products are out there, but I have to go shopping for them. 😵 5y
cherinium I'm with you! I am very easily overwhelmed by smells. Although, I have a coworker with no sense of smell, and I'll take my sensitivity over that any day! (There are advantages to having a coworker who can't smell when you work in a veterinary hospital that often is permeated with unpleasant messes!) 5y
julesG @cherinium I can see the advantage there. Still, being sensitive is better than having no sense of smell. 5y
cherinium @julesG Yes, when the rest of us are gagging while trying to clean up a mess, we just call her over and say, "Have at it." Fortunately, she's a good sport about it. BUT, there are so many wonderful smells she misses out on, so I wouldn't trade her for anything! 5y

I love this series! Narrated by Chet the dog, the books follow Chet and his person Bernie as they investigate for clients and sometimes on their own. They are light and fun. Chet reminds me so much of Gunther, who somewhat reluctantly agreed to pose with the book.

Day 6 #anthropomorphiccharacters #feistyfeb A slightly different spin on this - although Chet the dog@narrates the books in this series, he otherwise still acts very much like I imagine a dog would act.

BethFishReads Fun series! 7y
Megabooks My mom loved these. I bought her book 1 as a gift! 7y
Tanner @BethFishReads @Ebooksandcooks It really is a fun series (and god knows we could use some fun these days). 7y

Entertaining read featuring that loveable canine narrator, Chet. My Ace Of Hearts is no Chet The Jet, but he's my adorable dog!

"Pollyanna? A new one on me. A perp? Sounded that way, if I was following things right. In which case: heads up, Pollyanna. Hope you look good in orange." Bahahaahaaa, I love Chet! ❤️?

I've been reading some darkish books and some long books lately, so am adding something a little lighter into the repertoire.

SusanInTiburon I love Chet's mind. 8y
Tanner @SusanInTiburon Me too, I love how he doesn't worry about the past. Oh yeah, Chet the Jet! 8y
SusanInTiburon @Tanner And how he knows Bernie is the best person in the world, and how he gets completely distracted by food, and how he regards other members of the Nation Within ... 💛💛💛 8y

Yay! Book mail!

Suzze I've only read the first in the series, and loved it! 8y
Tanner @Suzze - they're all pretty entertaining. Not great works of "literature" but who cares - they're fun! 8y
Suzze I need a fun series to break up some of the other books I read! Nice to have a quickie with a light book. 😀😀😀😀 8y
