Manfred Baumann is a loner. Socially awkward and ill at ease, he spends his evenings surreptitiously observing Adele Bedeau, the sullen but alluring waitress at his local bistro. Then one day she vanishes into thin air."

Thank you for all the kind words on my previous post. 💕 Covid was not how I planned on ending 2020 but it‘s pretty fitting, I suppose.

Typically I take a nice bath on NYE and finish my last book of the year. Only part of that will be happening tonight. Being sick has thrown me into a total slump. I am truly enjoying the tagged book though, so I‘ll take that as a win and if I don‘t finish it right away, 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Happy New Years littens!!

This time, I‘m almost positive we have covid. Waiting on some test results and I‘m sick as hell. Brian luckily is on the tail end and G‘s symptoms have been more mild. And F is carrying on as if everything is the same as always. 🤪

I had big plans today of reading and binge watching TLC but most of the time, I just can‘t do it. Hopefully I feel better tomorrow so I can enjoy my convalescence. 😂

Amiable Sending healing wishes so you can at least feel well enough to get some reading in! 😀 No, seriously—get better soon! 3y

Reggie Take a multivitamin. I‘m overweight and have diabetes. I should have died when I got it but I honestly believe it‘s that I have been taking a multivitamin since the summer and probiotics for two years and felt fine after 4 days. Also, I read an article saying certain Vitamin deficiencies are what is causing the worst. Take care and I hope you feel better. 3y

We spend 2.5 hours in line today for covid tests. 😭 The girls have symptoms of a mild cold, so we just wanted to err on the side of caution. That said, our library just launched home delivery. We only live a block away, so I felt bad utilizing it, but since we‘re in quarantine now, it seemed like the most prudent option. We came home from our testing to our new books. 🥰🥰

Reviewsbylola And thanks for the rec! @britt_brooke Hopefully she‘s a fan. 3y

A really well written slow paced ‘thriller‘. I really enjoyed the characters and the plot development. I was very surprised at the ending, but can‘t think of a different way to wrap it all up. I‘ll be hunting down ‘The Accident on the A35‘ like Gorskie hunting down a killer 😉

This audiobook is available on Audible today for Q9.99. Has anybody read it? Would you recommend it? Not a book I have heard of before.

charl08 Not unless you like your crime postmodern/ tricksy. 6y
Ms_T I was curious about this too. I‘ve read His Bloody Project by the same author and really enjoyed it. 6y
Andrew65 @charl08 Thanks for that information. 😊 6y

Andrew65 @Ms_T It seems to have a good rating on Goodreads, 3.89, but no one on there I know has read it. Will give it some more thought but at Q9.99 May just take the risk. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Have read His Bloody Project and LOVED it. This one is in my TBR - curious! 6y
Andrew65 @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Glowing praise with both you and @Ms_T enjoying His Bloody Project. 6y
Ottergirl I bought it on the daily deal and I‘m really enjoying it! 6y

He really is a masterful writer. A very unusual crime novel, more concerned with looking at the two main players lives than with any of the crimes committed. Burnet really can do no wrong.

Ottergirl I‘ve just finished this too! It‘s such a great story.... the end was a bit of a surprise! 6y

I was wondering when Burnet would squeeze a Maigret reference in! I know he's a fan and you can totally tell he is in this book.

You‘ll be swept up by creepy Manfred and Gorski‘s relentless dedication to his craft. Both men have compelling backstories that have intersected once before. Now—when both are older, more mature, and with a lot more baggage—the game of cat and mouse begins anew, this time due to the disappearance of the eponymous waitress. ⬇️

WanderingBookaneer While some readers may not be satisfied with the book‘s resolution, I was okay with it. In fact, I am curious to see how it will add to the detective‘s baggage in the second book. 6y

Love, love, loved this book! In essence it's a crime novel but from an observer's perspective - the observer being the protagonist Manfred Baumann. He's a fascinating character and, for me, not particularly likeable which makes his observations even more interesting and surprising.

The book trots along at a comfortable pace and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. I can't recommend this enough!

4.5 stars. Finished His Bloody Project, my first book on the Man Booker long list. Since I have more to say than I can manage in 451 characters (love that @Litsy chose that number!), I've included a link to my non-spoiler Goodreads review if you're interested. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show?id=1712264005.

This book isn't on Litsy yet. I bought it on kindle last night and am about 25% of the way through it so far. It's a crime story that is a whydunnit instead of a whodunnit told using documents. It starts with statements take by the police. I'm currently reading Roddy Macrae's journal (although the narrator points out that there are questions of authenticity). It is also interesting learning about the life of 19th century Scottish crofters.

Reviewsbylola I became interested in this one once it was announced as part of the Booker long list. 8y
bookishbunny @Reviewsbylola That's where I first heard about it, too. I'd like to try to read through as much of the list as possible (at least the ones available in the US). 8y
