The Perfect Daughter
The Perfect Daughter: A Novel | D.J. Palmer
20 posts | 13 read | 10 to read
The Perfect Daughter is a thriller that explores the truth or lies behind a teenage girl's multiple personality disorder, from D.J. Palmer, the author of The New Husband. Grace never dreamt shed visit her teenaged daughter Penny in the locked ward of a decaying state psychiatric hospital, charged with the murder of a stranger. There was not much question of her daughters guilt. Police had her fingerprints on the murder weapon and the victims blood on her body and clothes. But they didnt have a motive. Grace blames herself, because thats what mothers dothey look at their choices and wonder, what if? But hindsight offers little more than the chance for regret. None of this was conceivable the day Penny came into her life. Then, it seemed like a miracle. Penny was found abandoned, with a mysterious past, and it felt like fate brought Penny to her, and her husband Arthur. But as she grew, Penny's actions grew more disturbing, and different "personalities" emerged. Arthur and Grace took Penny to different psychiatrists, many of whom believed she was putting on a show to help manage her trauma. But Grace didnt buy it. The personas were too real, too consistent. It had to be a severe multiple personality disorder. One determined psychiatrist, Dr. Mitch McHugh, helped discover someone new inside Pennya young girl named Abigail. Is this the nameless girl who was abandoned in the park years ago? Mitch thinks Abigail is the key to Pennys past and to the murder. But as Grace and Mitch dig deeper, they uncover dark and shocking secrets that put all their lives in grave danger.

I've never heard of this book or read anything by the author, but this was a great impulse pick from the library! The does she or doesn't she have multiple personalities angle made for an interesting psych thriller. And while I found the ending a little too implausible and rushed, I certainty didn't see it coming! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jemgirl2014 I really enjoyed"The New Husband". A bit Life Timey but still good! ? 2y

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿 is 𝗗.𝗝. 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗲𝗿's most ambitious & accomplished thriller yet. It's an impressively clever, intricately-plotted mystery with shocking revelations & plot twists. Intense, gripping, & entertaining, Palmer explores mental health treatment, the criminal justice system, family dynamics, & forgiveness. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⁣

tracey38 Wow, I'd stay inside, too, with that heat! 3y
JHSiess @tracy38 It was 106 degrees in downtown Sacramento yesterday!🌡🔥🤦‍♀️ That's about 35 miles north of Lodi & it's always about 7 degrees cooler here because most evenings we get the Delta breezes, which are delightful. They really help cool things down. My a/c will be going all week . . . no break predicted until next Monday. 3y

What a wild roller coaster ride that was! I love a good psychological thriller, especially one loaded with shocking secrets and lies. After a somewhat slow build up, this book then really took off.

I can‘t resist a synopsis involving multiple personalities/ dissociative identity disorder, plus I have read & enjoyed earlier novels of Palmer‘s- unfortunately this one didn‘t quite live up to my expectations. It‘s a bit drawn out -& while I appreciate the mental health focus it does draw out the book. The ending is chaotic & rushed with summations at the very end more like a serial TV show..the plot does have plenty of red herrings & surprises!

I always enjoy books by D. J. Palmer. This one is his best yet in my opinion. It has quite a bit going one. A family torn apart by a very unknown and confusing mental disorder. DID or dissociative identity disorder. A girl with several faces. Several identities. Several lives. All living inside of her one body.
