An interesting and informative read. I enjoyed how humour was interjected throughout this book. It's good to know that we are not alone when we are going through this stage of life and books written like this help us to get through this stage, not only with some more knowledge as to what and why things are happening the way they are but also to see some humour in what can be a very rocky, emotional time for us.⭐⭐⭐

CBee @AmyG I started having all of these issues and I‘m like, what the heck? Then I looked it up and there just isn‘t a wealth of info, which is so dumb. Last night my face was beet red. BEET! And burning hot. Then I get cold within five minutes 😂😂 2y

AmyG Hot flashes are the worst. I didn‘t get too many but when I did…holy cow. I used to get so hot at night I would step outside on the deck (in winter) to cool off. 2y

Crazeedi @CBee I've had all the symptoms and more, like clockwork now I'm cold when I go to bed, the 1 am I'm ready to strip and throw all the covers off, then 4 am I'm freezing again, that's basically every night 2y
CarolynM I feel you. I'm hoping I'm almost through perimeopause, it hasn't been fun but I feel lucky not to have had the experiences some people have. What I do wish, though, is that I'd realised what was going on earlier in the process. 2y
CBee @CarolynM yes! It isn‘t talked about much. I never knew there was a “peri” phase, not until someone mentioned it and I googled it. It was a eureka moment! Luckily there are a lot of great women out there who are putting it out there and trying to reduce the stigma. 😊 2y

Crazeedi @CBee the thing is I'm way past period menopause, it's just a fact of crone age! The heat explodes from the belly at night! Most of my other symptoms faded long ago. This one has stayed... 2y

This is a very useful guide; I wish it existed in my teens as it is crucial to handle and address potential hormone-related issues correctly from the very beginning. But it's never too late to understand how to improve health and with it, the overall quality of life.

Started this on NetGalley the other day, and so far i‘m not sure. The author refers to herself as a women‘s health practitioner, and I have no clue if that means specialist doctor or something more woo-woo.

It‘s walking an interesting line between light-hearted (Hormones are named after celebrities, even if I‘ve only heard of half of them) and informative. I‘ve learnt

rockpools that aromatase is an enzyme than converts testosterone etc to oestrogen. (This is a bizarrely helpful thing for me to understand). And I appreciate that one of the symptoms of perimenopause is listed, as standard, as ALL THE RAGE. So yes, not sure We‘ll see. 3y

rockpools @Velvetfur I wondered if you have any recommendations for similar books, cos I know you‘ve read lots. And half of them just make me cross!! I‘m looking for practical stuff that‘s not-too-out-there, but also not too ‘HRT is the answer to all your problems‘ (not an option because breast cancer). Hope you‘re doing well at the moment Vikki 😘 3y
Velvetfur @rockpools Aw thank you Rachel 💜 To be honest most of what I've read is online - Liz Earle is a fantastic source, especially for advice on what exactly you can do about it all; her books are 'Healthy Menopause' (older book) and 'The Good Menopause Guide' (more recent, I've read a lot of that one). Velvetfur ⬆️ Who worked with Liz Earle on her books and regularly contributes to Liz's Insta/Facebook Live as well as posts (I'm sure both accounts are on Facebook too if you have that instead of Insta). I'm also obsessed with Caroline Hirons, she has loads on her Insta page about meno and a saved Insta Live session about it - find it and watch it, it's fantastic. Caroline's 1st book came out in singer just gone, it's called 'Skincare' and I know it has ⬇️ 3y
Velvetfur ⬆️ a chapter on meno; I only just got the ebook the other day so I'll be digging into that as soon as I can. I also recently got the ebook of 'Confessions of A Menopausal Woman' by Andrea McLean which looks like good support & I'll probably find out even more about what meno does to the body; and just before new year I got the paperback 'The M Word' by Dr Philippa Kaye - that looks wonderful, can't wait to get stuck into that one as well. ⬇️ 3y
Velvetfur ⬆️ And just to go back to Caroline Hirons, she brought in a meno specialist Dr on the Insta Live that's saved on her account, and they were both upset that so many women are told they can't have HRT due to breast cancer - they argue that you certainly can! If the doc says no, get another doc! And then another one if still no! It will of course be a different type to HRT for non-bc people but there will be that needle in the haystack that ⬇️ 3y
Velvetfur ⬆️ will be the one for you. But you have to preservere and argue your case, unfortunately. Oh and I also read the little British Medical Institute 'guide to menopause' but I wouldn't recommend that as it's not v in-depth & goes on about HRT too much. Liz Earle is your best bet for managing symptoms naturally although she does that in tandem with HRT, but there will be some non-HRT help in her books for you too. I'm gonna get some links for you... 3y

Velvetfur I'm now onto my third month of HRT but it's only eased the symptoms and there's not much change in my heart symptoms which were my main concern. Also wasn't any change in the night-waking but the doc has recently given me antidepressants so now I'm sleeping at night, hehe 🙂 I hope all this info ends up helping you though! 3y

I‘m going to spend the afternoon exploring these, and see where we end up. And I honestly thought that HRT was completely out - I‘m not sure it‘s the route I want to go down, but I definitely want to know what my options are, so I‘ll look that up. rockpools @Velvetfur Sleep is a great starting point! Heart symptoms just sounds scary - I hope you find a way to get that sorted. I was having palpitations at the start of lockdown 1, which they put down to anxiety and depression & packed me off to CBT for. I was very surprised thst seemed to reduce everything- I‘d gone in v skeptical! Thank you SO much for all your information- I really appreciate it. 🥰 3y

Velvetfur You're so welcome lovely, and I'm glad you've already found some specific help/info. I was like you, not wanting to go on HRT, but it turned out to be the best way to deal with my symptoms. I'm glad to hear your heart symptoms were dealt with too and it's not ongoing. Your poor Mum though! I hope she gets the migraines sorted xx 3y
rockpools UPDATE: I bailed at 30%. Found it overwhelming and stressful. Sent a DNF message to NetGalley. Haven‘t read enough to formally review, but not the right book for me. 3y
