I was underwhelmed by this book. The general concept of the story was great. I actually liked a lot of the little touches that hinted at The Nutcracker. That being said...I didn't like much else about it. The pacing of the story left me bored. I had to push myself to finish it. Then the relationship between characters felt underdeveloped. Same with a lot of the story. Some parts just seemed thrown together. I don't think this is the book for me.

A nutcracker retelling filled with delicious descriptions and a magical atmosphere! Loved it 4.5/5

I wanted to finish this festive read before attending to my stack. While this dark Nutcracker-inspired tale had a gorgeously defined setting / world, the development of the relationships between characters was weak. I liked the framing story, better than the fantasy set in Everwood, but I‘m still a sucker for a portal fantasy.

A darkly fantastical (and feminist) retelling of The Nutcracker. Though far from flawless, it‘s thoroughly enjoyable and gorgeously atmospheric thanks to Kuzniar‘s mighty pretty prose.

emz711 Is it a young adult read? 1y
LadyCait84 @emz711 It‘s not technically a YA, but is a bit of a bildungsroman/coming-of-age story. Though a little on the darker side. (edited) 1y

This one was okay...maybe I would have felt different had I read a hardcopy of it instead of listening to the #audiobook. There are some books I just feel can't be listened to in order to get the right vibe.

It was a nice read and interesting take on The Nutcracker, but some of the characters didn't make a lot of sense, the weird sex scene near the end felt out of place. There hadn't been really anything like that in the book.

#fantasy #winter

StaceGhost I completely agree! I think it was a poor execution of a metaphor, maybe? But then the assertion she needed to lose her virginity to become a self-contained woman just feels icky. 1y

Ohhh I hated so many things about this book. The unneeded sex scene at the end really ruined the magical, whimsical feel of the story. While I understand it was a dark adult retelling it just felt out of place. The slow burn romance that lead up to their first kiss was terribly placed and handled in the most unromantic way possible. The plot hole around the nutcracker figurine. It only felt nutcracker in referencing symbolic pieces of the story.

Sweetkokoro Drosselmeier being a nasty creep. No rat king, no explanation how Drosselmeier got his magic, and the end while I get it‘s was suppose to be liberating because Marietta got her “freedom” and chose her path was just blah for me. 1y

How are you getting on with your selected reads? I hope you're enjoying them as much as I am mine.

Finishing the tagged today, which is a wonderful retelling of The Nutcracker. I plan to listen to Sir Gawain while prepping for my eldest's birthday on Friday. Presents to wrap, cake to bake, then onto the Christmas plans ❤️❄️🎁🎂🎄❄️❤️

Cazxxx I read that book last year and really loved it, so much so that I‘d like the audiobook as well 😊 1y

I am only halfway through this book and I just have to take a minute to brag on M.A. Kuzniar's writing style! Everything is pure magic laced in sugar spun snowflakes and scented with gingerbread charm! If you are looking for a beautiful and dreamy Christmas read this is the one! I. Am. Obsessed.!!!!!! It's got a dark twist on it but that makes me love it even more. 🖤❄️🦌🧁🎄🩰🐁

RobES Would you recomm1end for a mature 10year old girl? Looking for some Christmas books for my daughter xx 1y
julieclair Ooohhh… this looks so good! Adding it to my (very overambitious) December TBR! 1y
KateReadsYA @RobES currently unsure as I have only reached chapter 3 but they are in the midst of having a ballet for her suitors to see her dance! There is talk of marriage so not sure if she would be interested in that aspect of it yet at her age! I did see a review that there was some violence and a "mature scene"? Aged 15+ 1y
KateReadsYA @julieclair I really like it so far :) haven't read anything with ballet in it yet. 1y
KateReadsYA @RobES try this one maybe? It's another nutcracker retelling I have on my tbr and I think it's for 13+ 1y

Bailedbailed

I have not bailed on a lot of books this year so far, but I was so bored. Not even speeding up past my usual audio speed helped. Made it a quarter of the way through before remembering that I don't have to finish every book I start, so I released it back into the Libby wilds to find a more agreeable reader. #DNF

Isaac.Witkowski I personally thought this book was very exiting 2y

Read for a book tour review this past week, I am slightly bummed that it came after Christmas but still a great book for a cozy winter night. A reimagining of The Nutcracker tagged as Adult fantasy, but would work for New Adult or older YA. Marietta is a 21-year-old in 1906 upper society who longs to be a ballet dancer but whose parents insist she marry. She ends up transported to the fantasy world of Everwood & is held at the palace there ⬇️

DebinHawaii … along with two other women from other worlds. I most liked the female empowerment & friendship between all of them. A fun escape, my review & some chocolate recipes to pair with it are here: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2022/02/the-book-tour-stops-here-review-of.ht... 2y
GondorGirl I picked up a beautiful edition of this, but haven't gotten to it yet. Maybe I'll wait until Christmas... 2y

Rating: 4⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was just so magical and the perfect read for Christmas. I know the Author did ballet herself and there are a lot of ballet references. I don't know the first thing about all the Croisé, Plié and Arabesque. I just pictured her dancing pretty😅

I can‘t explain how much I LOVED this story! Total impulse read (10pts) which is a Nutcracker reimagined (25pts for holiday theme) story. Which is also part of my ballet themed read I‘m doing also. So yay! Fantasy. Romance. Sigh so so good #wintergames2021 #wintercosy #mistletoemaniacs @Clwojick @PuddleJumper

Perfect Winter Magic!

I love, love, loved this book my only regret is that I didn‘t read it for the first time at Christmas, my recommendation to you is if you like the sound of this book wait until it is wintery where you are

Sumptuous writing with every page brimming with delicious descriptions. It's a style that's not for everyone but I found it an enchanting world, one that it was easy to lose oneself in reading about. I would have awarded this the maximum 5 stars if it weren't for Marietta putting others at risk due to bad decisions & the ending seeming a little too quick & easy. 4.5🌟

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, HQ, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
