Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth | Noa Tishby
6 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
This is not your Bubbies history book. Bill Maher, host of Real Time with Bill Maher ?A fascinatingand very movingbook that should be read by anyone for whom Israel is a mystery. Aaron Sorkin, award-winning screenwriter of The West Wing and The Social Network A personal, spirited, and concise chronological timeline spanning from Biblical times to today that explores one of the most fascinating countries in the worldIsrael. Israel. The small strip of arid land is 5,700 miles away but remains a hot button issue and a thorny topic of debate. But while everyone seems to have a strong opinion about Israel, how many people actually know the facts? Here to fill in the information gap is Israeli American Noa Tishby. Offering a fresh, 360-degree view, Tishby brings her straight-shooting, engaging, and slightly irreverent voice to the subject, creating an accessible and dynamic portrait of a tiny country of outsized relevance. Through bite-sized chunks of history and deeply personal stories, Tishby chronicles her homelands evolution, beginning in Biblical times and moving forward to cover everything from WWI to Israels creation to the real disputes dividing the country today. Tackling popular misconceptions with an abundance facts, Tishby provides critical context around headline-generating controversies and offers a clear, intimate account of the richly cultured country of Israel.

For someone woefully uninformed (me), this was a fantastic start to my journey to learn more about the history of Israel. It is indeed simple (despite a seriously complicated and difficult history), well-researched, and even funny at times. I liked Noa‘s personal spin on things and look forward to learning more. Continuing to bear witness to this horrible war and praying for some sort of peaceful solution ♥️

I highly recommend this one. I will admit to knowing little about Israel before my friendship with @Cinfhen . I think it is important for all of us interested in the current war to educate ourselves on the history of the region from the perspective of both sides. Tishby, whose family was integral to the founding of Israel, provides a lot of historical information and how that impacts the present day as well as information on the diverse people ⬇️

Megabooks That populate modern day Israel (including the 26% Arab population). All Israeli citizens (including Arabs and other minorities) have full rights to participate in their democracy, and I think maintaining a democratic presence in the region is important. I also appreciate the need for a safe place for Jewish folks after the holocaust and pogroms as well as during the scary rise of antisemitism currently. Other side up next ➡️ (edited) 6mo
BarbaraBB It is so good to try to look at this difficult situation from all sides. I also highly recommend a book Cindy sent me once: 6mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB just checked it out from my library! Thanks! 💜💜 6mo

Anna40 That‘s wonderful! Very important to show empathy to both sides. I read the book too. I think it‘s a great introduction to Israel and its history. I haven‘t read Letters to My Palestinian neighbor. Will try to find it. Does anyone know how Cindy is doing? 6mo
Megabooks @Anna40 while she continues to be physically unharmed (thank God 🙏🏻), it continues to be really emotionally difficult for her. I can only imagine living that near to a war zone. Unfortunately her son has lost three members of the unit he was in and other people she knows personally continue to be in danger whether due to their location or military service. It is just an incredibly difficult situation. (edited) 6mo
Anna40 Thanks for letting me know. So sorry to hear that 6mo
Centique @BarbaraBB i so agree with you both. There is much to be learnt and understood from each side. I am reminded again of the importance of solid investigative journalism and the research of committed writers like these. Thank you Meg for again showing there is a wise path to take as an outsider to this awful situation while showing empathy to those personally affected. 5mo

This isn‘t typical history book, it‘s a book explaining (and defending) what means to be Israeli, what is Zionism, what is Hamas and why we are here where we are … well researched history events are intertwined with author‘s personal experience/life and that - with her dynamic perspective and narration - makes this book nutritious food for thoughts.

Based on research, her own observations and experiences Tishby wrote this book about and for Israel. I found her colloquial tone a bit annoying, but it serves a purpose - reaching a bigger audience. The book succeeds in giving an overview of Israel‘s history, society and covers the settlements, BDS or the Charedim. It‘s a a good starting point, if you want to explore some topics in more detail.

#FoodAndLit In 2004 our family took a sabbatical and spent a year in #Israel 🇮🇱I found some photos from that year! For such a small country Israel has loads to see, with all types of terrains. In 3 hours time you can go from snow covered mountains to dry desert heat. My favorite part about this country is all of the history and archeological sites. Tagged book is a new release, part history book/part tour guide.
