Bone Deep: Untangling the Betsy Faria Murder Case
Bone Deep: Untangling the Betsy Faria Murder Case | Charles Henry Bosworth, Joel Schwartz

THE TRUE STORY BEHIND NBC'S MARQUEE MINI-SERIES THE THING ABOUT PAM STARRING RENEE ZELLWEGER AS PAM HUPP AND JOSH DUHAMEL AS JOEL SCHWARTZ, PREMIERING FEBRUARY 2022. The explosive, first-ever insider's account of the case that's captivated millions - the murder of Betsy Faria and the wrongful conviction of her husband - told by Joel J. Schwartz, the defense attorney who fought for justice on behalf of Russel Faria, and New York Times bestselling author Charles Bosworth Jr. Two days after Christmas, 2011, Russel Faria returned to his Troy, Missouri home to find his wife, Betsy, dead, a knife still lodged in her neck. She had been stabbed fifty-five times in a brutal murder that would set off a chain of events leading to one man's wrongful conviction and imprisonment, another man's death, the revelation of a diabolical scheme, and an astounding miscarriage of justice left unresolved for another ten years. First responders concluded that Betsy was dead for hours when Russ discovered her. No blood was found implicating Russ, and surveillance video, receipts, and friends' testimony all supported his alibi. Yet incredibly, police and the prosecuting attorney ignored the evidence. In their minds, Russ was guilty. But prominent defense attorney Joel J. Schwartz quickly recognized the real killer. The motive was clear. Days before her murder, the terminally ill Betsy replaced her husband with her friend, Pamela Hupp, as her life insurance beneficiary. Still, despite the prosecution's flimsy case and Hupp's transparent lies, Russ was convicted--leaving Hupp free to kill again. Bone Deep takes readers through the perfect storm of miscalculations and missteps that led to an innocent man's conviction--and recounts Schwartz's successful battle to have that conviction overturned. Written with Russ Faria's cooperation, and filled with chilling new revelations and previously undisclosed evidence, this is the story of what can happen when police, prosecutor, judge, and jury all fail in their duty to protect the innocent--and let a killer get away with murder.

This was fascinating! I have listened to the podcast The Thing About Pam, so I knew the overall story. But this goes into a much deeper dive. The first trial is infuriating! And while the author clearly loves himself (he makes a point to talk about how good looking he is), he was a great lawyer, and it‘s a really good book.

I felt like switching up my reading a bit as I don‘t think I‘ve read any nonfiction for a while. It must be “true crime time”. 😉

Cathythoughts Enjoy ! I guess it‘s ok to say that 😳❤️❤️ 6mo

Audiobook & a puzzle...a great way to spend a hot summer day inside. Now let's see how long before the cats ruin it (which is why I usually don't do many puzzles anymore) 🤔😼

Listening to this true-crime audiobook. About a murder case that happened near my college town. The husband was changed for the crime but years later was found innocent. Who is the real killer?

I applied for a job with the local public defenders office and have an interview this week! Honestly, it's a crazy coincidence that this story is based there.

Well wish me luck! It's a job that matches my masters degree so well!

JamieArc Good luck 🍀 1y

The fact that this was an actual murder.that due to some sub par investigative work an innocent man was initially incarcerated for the murder of his wife was beyond disturbing. To then read how the actual murderer wasn't even considered to be a suspect for such a long time was just gob smacking to me. Especially given how it is revealed that her own mother also died under suspicious circumstances. A well written, informative true crime read.⭐⭐⭐⭐

My #bookmail is on 🔥 today. Kensington Press sent a finished copy of this recent true crime release.

I'm a total weirdo, I think. I love true crime & non-fiction but have decided I do not like memoirs or autobiographies. I don't mind essays but I don't like short stories.

I think I might be a #booksnob. 🤣😂

Ok so I live in Illinois right across the river from St Louis. So this was a “local” case for me. I remember it being in the news. I didn‘t see the Dateline interview but I‘ll look it up and watch it now that I‘ve read this book. This is so maddening and heartbreaking at the same time. Very through look at a case that should never have gone to trial once let alone twice. At least the right person is in jail now! #readingchallenge2022

LeahBergen I already have this one stacked! 👍 3y

Wow- recently, I started to thoroughly enjoy listening to #TrueCrime books. Though Missouri isn‘t far from IL, I missed the news stories about Betsy Faria‘s murder while it all unfolded. This book, spanning years, covers the time when Russell, Betsy‘s husband, comes home from his standing night with friends to discover her body- stabbed 55 times. The investigation that follows takes one strange turn after another to make this a riveting listen!
