Ocean's Echo
Ocean's Echo | Everina Maxwell
13 posts | 7 read | 10 to read
Ocean's Echo is a stand-alone space adventure about a bond that will change the fate of worlds, set in the same universe as Everina Maxwell's hit debut, Winter's Orbit. Rich socialite, inveterate flirt, and walking disaster Tennalhin Halkana can read minds. Tennal, like all neuromodified readers, is a security threat on his own. But when controlled, readers are a rare asset. Not only can they read minds, but they can navigate chaotic space, the maelstroms surrounding the gateway to the wider universe. Conscripted into the military under dubious circumstances, Tennal is placed into the care of Lieutenant Surit Yeni, a duty-bound soldier, principled leader, and the son of a notorious traitor general. Whereas Tennal can read minds, Surit can influence them. Like all other neuromodified architects, he can impose his will onto others, and hes under orders to control Tennal by merging their minds. Surit accepted a suspicious promotion-track request out of desperation, but he refuses to go through with his illegal orders to sync and control an unconsenting Tennal. So they lie: They fake a sync bond and plan Tennal's escape. Their best chance arrives with a salvage-retrieval mission into chaotic spaceto the very neuromodifcation lab that Surit's traitor mother destroyed twenty years ago. And among the rubble is a treasure both terrible and unimaginably powerful, one that upends a decades-old power struggle, and begins a war. Tennal and Surit can no longer abandon their unit or their world. The only way to avoid life under full military control is to complete the very sync they've been faking. Can two unwilling weapons of war bring about peace? At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

This was a lot of fun. Character driven queer SF romance. The focus was on developing the male characters and a deep emotional bond between them. Supporting that was a plot of twisty politics and space magic. Not one for the hard SF fans. But there was substance, medium stakes and very good execution

I remember I almost DNF'd this one -- so glad I didn't! A very swoony romance.

Andrew65 Sounds interesting. 4mo

Loved this audiobook set in the same universe as Winter‘s Orbit - a lovely scifi m/m romance - slow burn and sweet / with mind control, alien remnants , civil war etc in the background 👍👍💚🐉

Sorry not sorry my first read of the year is the biggest best book of my month - I made a good choice. January was full of fun and interesting books I loved many more than just Ocean‘s Echo.

Crumbs Frizzy

Foul Lady Fortune

The Princess and the Scoundrel

The Keeper of Night was also amazing and I had fun rereading Little Thieves.

Different Kinds of Fruit

I read 28 books in January - my lowest number in a while but that‘s okay.

Soubhiville I will always buy Everina Maxwell‘s books. I loved this too. 1y

January wrap-up! I finished 10 books from a bunch of different genres, including 3 books by Rachel Harrison, a local author who's becoming a favorite. 🥇goes to Ocean's Echo, but I also loved The Return, Bad Dolls, The Employees, People Person, and Two Wrongs Make a Right.

dylanisreading Sounds like Ocean's Echo is good. It's on my tbr! 1y

My January Wrap Up! I had an excellent month of reading. From my #AuldLangSpune list I read Black Sun, Sentient, Hart and Mercy, and tried August Kitko. (not for me at the moment, may return to it later.)

Best of the month: Black Sun and Behind the Beautiful Forevers. I loved many more of these, lots of 4-5 star reads in January.

Lizpixie Some great books there, is that a Nancy Drew I spy?😍The ChildFinder was a 4.5⭐️ read for me a few years ago plus I adored Hart & Mercy last year. Still crossing my fingers for a sequel🤞 1y
Soubhiville @Lizpixie yes I read Nancy for my bookclub‘s theme “childhood favorites.” I‘ve found I love Rene Denfeld, hoping to get to book 2 this month or next 🙂📚. 1y

Ocean‘s Echo takes place in the same universe as Winter‘s Orbit, but isn‘t the sequel I expected. It‘s about different characters altogether and a different political system.

It‘s just as amazing though! Featuring telepathic characters and military rivalries, one main character who‘s feisty mischievous and self-destructive behavior threatens his political guardian‘s career forces him into military service.

So much heart and detail, Maxwell ⬇️

AmyG Sweet Seitje. ❤️or is it Sietje? (edited) 1y
Soubhiville Has definitely become a Must Read author for me. 1y
Soubhiville @AmyG it‘s Sietje 🙂🐶. We‘re enjoying a day off- ice storms in TX! The whole state shuts down when we have a freeze like this. 1y

Soubhiville Lol, the golden rule that‘s only sometimes true, right? @AmyG It was Maelstrom‘s grandmother‘s name, a traditional Dutch name I‘m told. There are others with both the feminine and masculine versions of the name in his ancestry. Since we didn‘t have kids, the dog got the name 😁💕. 1y
AmyG Thatis so sweet. ❤️ Hopefully she is a good girl, worthy of her great-grandmother‘s name. 1y

Finished my first 5⭐️ read of 2022! I loved this author's first book (Winter's Orbit) but this one was even better. Really fascinating, twisty scifi with excellently developed main characters. I love a messy, prickly protagonist, and Ocean's Echo definitely has that. I'll read whatever this author comes out with.

Soubhiville I am just about to open to page one! 💜 1y

I decided to join in #SeriesLove2023 since I have so many series books on my TBR. All of these are just the next in each series, many of them I have more than one from on my shelves. In addition I don‘t have yet Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse, The Bone Shard War by Andrea Stewart (due out in April), and the next in The Serpent Gates by AK Larkwood (no idea when it‘ll release.)

Hope to get to Ocean‘s Echo this month. 😁📚

TheSpineView Glad to have you! Those are some great series! 1y
Andrew65 Some great series in there and a range of different books too. Best of luck 😁 1y

I took my gift card to Book People‘s annual New Years 20% off sale and these are the books that followed me home. 😊📚💜

Winter‘s Orbit was one of my favorite books last year, and the tagged sequel is the one I‘m most excited for.

Also just heard about Ejaculate Responsibly this morning from @TheBookHippie and I‘m ready to get right into that one too.

AllDebooks I love a good #bookhaul in the sale. Great choices 👌 1y
Eyelit Nice haul! I look forward to your thoughts on them 😃 (also, I selected desert creatures this morning from a book subscription I just joined for the new year - so great minds read alike!) 1y
