A Botanist's Guide to Parties and Poisons
A Botanist's Guide to Parties and Poisons | Kate Khavari
18 posts | 19 read | 35 to read
The Lost Apothecary meets Dead Dead Girls in this fast-paced, STEMinist adventure. Debut author Kate Khavari deftly entwines a pulse-pounding mystery with the struggles of a woman in a male-dominated field in 1923 London. Newly minted research assistant Saffron Everleigh is determined to blaze a new trail at the University College London, but with her colleagues beliefs about womens academic inabilities and not so subtle hints that her deceased fathers reputation paved her way into the botany department, she feels stymied at every turn. When she attends a dinner party for the school, she expects to engage in conversations about the university's large expedition to the Amazon. What she doesnt expect is for Mrs. Henry, one of the professors wives, to drop to the floor, poisoned by an unknown toxin. Dr. Maxwell, Saffrons mentor, is the main suspect and evidence quickly mounts. Joined by fellow researcher--and potential romantic interest--Alexander Ashton, Saffron uses her knowledge of botany as she explores steamy greenhouses, dark gardens, and deadly poisons to clear Maxwell's name. Will she be able to uncover the truth or will her investigation land her on the murderers list, in this entertaining examination of societys expectations.

How can I resist a book with a title like this? I proposed a master gardener talk about essentials of a gardener‘s library; I wonder if I could include this? 😂 Looking forward to starting this.

This is the first of the books off my #Auldlangspine pairing @DebinHawaii and I loved it. A period piece set post WW1 featuring a spunky female lead fighting for her place in a university staff who decides to investigate a poisoning. All the feel of a country house comedy with stoic policemen and an attractive but damaged male love interest this was fun in an enolaholmes sort of a way. I really enjoyed thank you !

DebinHawaii I am so glad you enjoyed it! (The 2nd book was excellent too!) I think this is a great example of why I love @AuldLangSpine so much because it was on the list from my partner last year @Laughterhp & that‘s how I first discovered it. Yay to @monalyisha ‘s bookish matchmaking skills! 🎉📚🎉 10mo
Itchyfeetreader @DebinHawaii I love that - makes me want to sign up and add it to my list for next year! 10mo

A fun and cute historical fiction cozy that highlights 1920s academia and fun, feisty female characters! A steady plot that kept me reading and a beautiful cover! Highly recommend!

DebinHawaii I loved this one! I‘m in the midst of the second book right now: 14mo

My 3rd book from @Laughterhp ‘s #AuldLangSpine list & one that was not on my radar, odd since it‘s a cozy, set in 1923 London & has the academia/plant/poison thing going on, so right up my alley. I really enjoyed Saffron, the MC & her friend Elizabeth & potential love interest, Alexander. Saffron is smart & daring & probably too curious for her own well-being. Overall charming & fun & I‘ll definitely read the second book when it comes out in June.

Laughterhp Oo I‘m glad you liked this one! Can‘t wait for the next one to come out! 2y
mhillis I really liked this one! 2y
TheBookHippie Checking in haven‘t seen ya post hope you‘re feeling ok! 2y
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie Thanks for checking in my friend. 💜I‘m okay just can‘t seem to focus on much & then I spent Friday & Saturday at a seminar. I did the #SundayBuddyRead & Foul Lady Fortune but haven‘t gotten into the discussion much. I will be by at some point. 2y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii No worries ♥️ I‘m just glad you‘re not sick. I totally get the not focusing!! 2y

This book was cute. I really enjoyed Saffron and her friendships with Elizabeth and Ashton. I did find it a little bit predictable but being a tourist in this world of plants was surprisingly fun and interesting. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. #LMPBC #GroupE @BookishBelle

A super fun, cozy historical mystery with great banter & a fiesty, fun female protagonist. Sherlock Holmes flavor & Agatha Christie charm mixed with botany. Set in the 1920s London, this novel is wonderfully atmospheric. The plot starts off quite strong & has some wonderful description, plus a lot of plant-based knowledge. It does have a bit of a slow pace in the middle, but it's worth pushing through. A fun read, plus a gorgeous cover.

I had really been looking forward to this one and I'm a little disappointed in it. It's not bad, just not as good as I was anticipating. The series has potential but this first one is kind of bland.

Started listening to this tonight. Stoped at ch.9.

It is 1923 and Saffron Everleigh, research assistant at the University College London, faces not only the trials and tribulations of a woman in male dominated academia, but finds her beloved mentor the prime suspect in the murder of a department member. Of course she must investigate!

Crazeedi Sounds good and I love the cover and title ❤ 2y

JazzFeathers Just finished it and enjoyed it. It was a different take at the 1920s (my favourite period to read) and I liked it 😊 2y

Set five years after WWI, Saffron struggles around be taken seriously at the same university‘s botany department where her father once worked. With an upcoming South American expedition, Saffron attends a department dinner that ends in chaos- a suspected poisoning and the culprit must be another attendee! Pairing up with another department fellow, Saffron puts her skills to the test! Reminded me of Deanna Raybourn‘s books- but more modern!

kspenmoll I just started listening to this today! 2y
