Juniper and Thorn
Juniper and Thorn | Ava Reid
The last magic practitioners in their small town, and living in house filled with monsters, Marlinchen and her family are both loved and reviled by the townsfolk they work to cure. Their father, cursed to never be satisfied, keeps a tight grip on his daughters; their freedoms, virtues and powers under his control. But when, chafing at his restrictions, the sisters sneak out to attend the theatre and they hear of two men found dead, rumoured to have been brutally ripped apart, Marlinchen is soon drawn into a situation she never could have dreamed, and that will reveal secrets she'll wish she never discovered. After all, can you ever be truly free from the monster that lives inside yourself?

This was such a lush and gorgeous fantasy read - it managed to be both very classically fairytale-ish and also really original which was so cool. It felt quite YA at times, which isn‘t a criticism as much as a thing I just happen not to like, but also very violent at times. I think when I was a teenager I‘d have been absolutely obsessed with this.

This was a dark and twisted tale, full of the worst of man‘s desires and needs, and the havoc they can wreak on ordinary lives. The MC, Marlinchen, is both heroine and anti-hero, lost in a labyrinth partly of her own making. I wasn‘t positive of the outcome until it happened, and the gentle horror of it struck a real chord. I feel weighted down with this book, and I think it will stay with me for a while.

DNF there is just something about this that makes me uncomfortable, and not in a good horror way. Not for me.

🌟🌟🌟Went to the lake today with my family and finished this book on my Kindle! I usually love a creepy and gorey read, but this one just didn't do it for me. I wasn't very interested in the story whatsoever.

Horror and romance, the magical and monstrous all merge together in this gruesome gothic fantasy inspired by The Grimm Brothers‘ “Juniper Tree.” This is a viscerally potent story about surviving familial abuse, finding your power, and the potential of love for mutual self-liberation, that captures all the beauty and gore of the old fairy tales with a live, beating, and fiercely feminist heart all its own. A wonder.

Lizpixie @Nutmegnc @OutsmartYourShelf @kspenmoll @ozma.of.oz @TrishB @Dragon @MaureenMc @LeahBergen thank you all for your thoughts, it‘s greatly appreciated @Andrew65 thank you! The worst part is, I can‘t figure out how I got it. The only one I had contact with is my grandson and he‘s been negative the whole time, and my hubby who is also negative. So where did the virus come from🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Andrew65 @Lizpixie Was the flu COvID and provided a false positive? How are you today? 2y
Lizpixie @Andrew65 I don‘t think so. I Covid tested myself every 2nd day last week and they were all negative then two nights ago I started feeling strange & had a bad feeling so tested and come up positive on a RAT. Didn‘t want to trust that so had a PCR done at a testing site and that was positive too so🤷🏻‍♀️Still don‘t know how it happened. Feel like crap honestly, have bad vertigo today & nausea. Fun times! On antivirals now so 🤞I feel better soon. 2y

I loved 'The Wolf and the Woodsman', so when I heard there was going to be a new book set much later in the same universe I was really excited.

I... really didn't care for this one. I didn't particularly like any of the characters and found a lot of it unnecessarily erotic. I don't mind sex scenes, but I swear every third page was the main character talking about her nipples. 😅😬

I don‘t normally buy hardbacks unless it‘s an author I absolutely love, but this sounds right up my alley, the cover is gorgeous, and it was on a table at my local indie bookstore… so I got sucked in.

shanaqui Ooh, let us know how it is! 2y
