A Head Full of Ghosts meets Mexican Gothic in Piata, a terrifying possession tale by author and artist Leopoldo Gout. They were worshiped by our ancestors. Now they are forgotten. Soon, they'll make us remember. It was supposed to be the perfect summer. Carmen Sanchez is back in Mexico, supervising the renovation of an ancient abbey. Her daughters Izel and Luna, too young to be left alone in New York, join her in what Carmen hopes is a chance for them to connect with their roots. Then, an accident at the worksite unearths a stash of rare, centuries-old artifacts. The disaster costs Carmen her job, cutting the family trip short. But something malevolent and unexplainable follows them home to New York, stalking the Sanchez family and heralding a coming catastrophe. And it may already be too late to escape what's been awakened...

Overall, the pieces of gothic horror were there and worth waiting for. I enjoyed the culture of the Nahua People. There were hard hitting truths in some aspects of the horror (colonialism, racism, police brutality, etc). I think these moments were understated for its benefit. I had two big gripes with this book. I found that Gout‘s depiction of women entirely missed the mark and the editing was truly horrendous.
3/5 stars. The ending saved it!

Likes this one! It wasn‘t as creepy as I wanted, but the lore was great and it was a little gory. This is a dumb picture just because this was my Halloween book and I wanted to show my new Halloween tattoo.

Such a good, creepy book. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did. I'm glad I won a copy of it.

There is something to be said for having been able to escape the hellscape that is work by luxuriating in this bleak cloak of a book. Carmen and her 2 daughters are down in Mexico for work but when they go back home to New York, Carmen doesn‘t realize 1 of her daughters has brought something back with her. Gout really sows the unfairness of the world in this tale with vengeful spirits of peoples wiped out and forgotten. This is a strong pick. 💀

TrishB That first sentence is totally relatable. 13mo
Reggie @TrishB it took me way longer than it should have to finish it, but I was glad it was there on all those breaks and lunches. 13mo
AmyG Took me a minute to realize Gout was the author. My toe was tingling. 13mo

sarahbarnes I‘m always so grateful to a good book for being an escape from the real world. Great review. 13mo
Ruthiella Sorry to hear that your work sucks. I‘ve got 9 more years and I am counting the days. Glad books offer a respite from it all. ❤️ 13mo
rwmg @AmyG I had the same thought 😁 13mo
CoverToCoverGirl Sorry to hear your work life is so tough. Glad that you‘re able to escape into a book. Great review, as always. 🧡 13mo
Reggie @sarahbarnes Yes, amen to that. Thanks! This book makes me want to go read more Aztec-early South American history. 13mo
Reggie @Ruthiella Thank you. 2032, hoping it comes quick for you! ❤️ 13mo
Reggie @CoverToCoverGirl Thank you! 🧡 it has been a rough 2 weeks there. 13mo

AmyG Ha, always Reggie. Hope things at work get easier. 13mo
Bookzombie I hope work gets better, my friend. 🧁Great review! I already stacked it but I would again. I also saw it on the shelf at the library and really love the cover. 13mo
Reggie @Bookzombie thanks, Margie. It has not gotten better. Lol. I really enjoyed this book. It just makes you think about the peoples we‘ll never hear about because of the murdering bullies of history. But it‘s way more than that. 12mo
Centique Great review Reggie. I‘m sorry work sucks. 😫 💕 12mo
Suet624 I‘m sorry about work. 💕💕 12mo
Rissreads Sorry to hear you are doing it tough at work! I start my new job this week, I‘ve gone from an Education assistant at our school to a Library officer. It‘s my dream job! I‘m excited to get started! 12mo
Reggie @Centique @Suet624 Thanks. I just have people who expect me to baby them instead of learn the job they‘ve had for over 4 years. And a boss who is ok with just having bodies in jobs instead of making sure they‘re learning and doing what they‘re actually supposed to be doing. Instead he just keeps making accommodations. 12mo
Reggie @Rissreads thanks, and how exciting! I hope you have the best time there. 12mo

The only thing that doesn‘t go with the picture is what you can‘t hear-Madonna‘s Ray of Light- 🎵And I feel…….🎵 Lol I feel like dancing. They used to play Mexican music here and now it‘s 90s hits or something. Happy Reading Littens!

Suet624 Happy reading to you, sir. 13mo
Leftcoastzen Oh wow! That plate looks amazing, Ray of Light makes it even better!👏😁 13mo
Reggie @Leftcoastzen it was delicious. And when I was leaving they were playing Return of the Mac. 13mo

Bookzombie So whatcha got there? I was just showing David because we definitely miss the Tex-mex food in San Antonio. We haven‘t tried every place up here yet, but so far nothing is as good. Also, look forward to your review of that book. Edit: I realize that‘s not Tex-mex but it looks really yummy. (edited) 13mo
Centique That looks amazing. And paired with classic 90s, (the stuff you wanna dance to) that‘s just drool worthy. 🤤 (edited) 13mo
Centique Also, I‘ve just started the new Catherine Lacey, and although it‘s completely different, I‘m getting happy tingles cos so many sentences are just poking me in the stomach or slapping me around the ear 😂😂 13mo
batsy That looks amazing! And Return of the Mack is such a banger 😁 13mo
Reggie @Bookzombie I had a friend move to Lubbock and he said the Mexican even there couldn‘t compare even though it‘s like 1 1/2 hrs away from NM. I feel like there‘s probably more Hispanic people in San Antonio. I hope you find somewhere good. It‘s stuffed sopapillas/chicken/Xmas. It was so good. It‘s the only reason I look forward to taking my car in for service. Its like a block away. 😁 13mo
Reggie @Centique it was sooo good. I read an article on that book and it sounds crazy. Like not only do you have ABC going on it also has XYZ added to it. But if it‘s giving you sentence tingles, totally stacked. Pew is still in my head months later as I watch the news. The Nazis joining the terfs, very fine people on both sides indeed. We wanna solve a mythical trans problem but can‘t take guns outta peoples hands. It pretty sad. Hope you‘re doing ok. 13mo
Reggie @batsy another song played that made me glad it was Friday was that one r&b song with LeftEye (rip) where the chorus is you know what‘s up what‘s up what‘s up. If I hadn‘t needed to go grocery shopping afterwards I would have gone to a bar. Lol it was a vibe in that restaurant. 13mo
TrishB Looks fab ♥️ 13mo
Cathythoughts Enjoy ! Looks like a celebration 😁 13mo
Centique @Reggie we‘re all good. I‘ve been thinking about the Nazis joining the terfs too. Blows my mind. We just had Posie Parker here 😨 Didn‘t get to speak though cos someone threw tomato juice at her. 🏳️‍🌈 13mo
LeahBergen Yum!! 13mo
sarahbarnes This looks delicious. And I couldn‘t agree more with your comment above about how much energy we spend solving “issues” instead of the real issues we‘re dealing with here. 13mo

The cover art gave me Alien and Predator vibes.

I enjoyed the first part of the book, when the family was exploring the Tulancingo and learning new aspects of the culture. The second half of the book takes place in New York after the family comes back home. Her family and some friends they made in Mexico work together to save Luna and prevent the end of the world. The horror grows in the second half, with some interesting body horror.
