A Girl Called Samson
A Girl Called Samson: A Novel | Amy Harmon
15 posts | 14 read | 13 to read
From New York Times bestselling author Amy Harmon comes the saga of a young woman who dares to chart her own destiny in life and love during the American Revolutionary War. In 1760, Deborah Samson is born to Puritan parents in Plympton, Massachusetts. When her father abandons the family and her mother is unable to support them, Deborah is bound out as an indentured servant. From that moment on, she yearns for a life of liberation and adventure. Twenty years later, as the American colonies begin to buckle in their battle for independence, Deborah, impassioned by the cause, disguises herself as a soldier and enlists in the Continental Army. Her impressive height and lanky build make her transformation a convincing one, and it isn't long before she finds herself confronting the horrors of war head-on. But as Deborah fights for her country's freedom, she must contend with the secret of who she is--and, ultimately, a surprising love she can't deny.

Solid book. There were parts where I rolled my eyes. Cough-romance-cough. But I liked a solid 85% of it.

Feels like ages since I‘ve had a free Sunday evening to participate in #hyggehourreadathon so I‘m extending it into my afternoon with a reading nest under the air conditioning. Trying to finish tagged book for tomorrow‘s book club.

4.75⭐
I do love an Amy Harmon romance and with this book, she skillfully weaves a tapestry of historical facts and creative fiction. This novel was inspired by the extraordinary experiences of a real-life young woman who dared to defy societal norms during the Revolutionary War. It is full of grit, determination, and love...including but not limited to romantic love. This was also my first finished “read with my eyes“ book this year.

KadaGul I picked this book for Amazon First Reads 📖 It 👀 interesting. #AmazonFirstReads 6mo
AudiobookingWithLeah @KadaGul I think that's where I got it from...either that or KU. I wanted to listen to it...but I don't like the narrator who narrates it. 6mo

#Two4Tuesday

1) I hated my name growing up. My dad tells me he picked Debra from the actress Debra Paget. I think he said that in an attempt to get me to like it.

2) The tagged book is on my TBR and has Deborah as the MC.

What a story! Historical fiction at its best. I loved the characters. Deborah Samson deserves to be known and understood. As a woman during the Revolutionary War who wanted to serve. Of course, during those days, women had their place-in the home. I love the the way the author wove the truths in this fictional novel.

Amy Harmon does well-researched romantic historical fiction like no other. I don‘t know why her books go so under the radar. I‘ve enjoyed every book of hers I‘ve read, and this one might be favorite romance.

Samson is the true story of a former indentured servant who is driven by a patriotic duty to conceal her female identity and join the Continental Army. It‘s basically the plot of Mulan (in a good way!) transposed to the Revolutionary War.

Kimberlone @CoverToCoverGirl yes I loved the 1920s Irish setting! 1y

What a story!! And to think that Deborah Samson was a real person who did many of the same things that were described in this novel. I love and admire her strength and courage. She helped to pave the way for women‘s equality. This story will stay with me forever. Parts made me laugh, made me cry, (more importantly) amazed me. I am grateful to this author for telling Deborah‘s story.

I adore Amy Harmon‘s work. Her historic fictions are each so special. This book is definitely in my top recommends now. I throughly enjoyed Deborah/Samson/Rob‘s journey! Also, I‘m such a sucker for Harmon‘s romantic story telling.

The happy times are over (if indentured servitude can be called happy), and I am prepared to cry. Loving the book so far. #historicalfiction #amyharmon #americanrevolution

Anyone reading this one yet? Amy Harmon is my automatic buy author, so I was super excited that this was released this month. It has all my favorite preteen trope vibes of a badass girl pretending to be a boy and falling in love- ala Bloody Jack or Alanna the Lioness.
